I came up with this theory after I completed Leviathan the first time and saw that it gave Dominate as a bonus power. I then noticed another similarity with Morinth: the time she mentally enslaved a village and had them bring her sacrifices sounds an awful lot like what the Leviathans did to their thrall races, although we don't know exactly what the Leviathans meant by "tribute".
My theory is that there is, or was, a Leviathan Artifact on Thessia, since they were in their paleolithic era. Based on what Ann Bryson says about the artifacts, I think it is possible for an asari to use them to remotely mind meld with a Leviathan and impregnate herself by doing so.
The initial offspring of these remote mindmelds appear no different from any other asari. It was only later that some, not all, descendants of these unions started harming, and in some cases killing, the people they meld with. The greater the concentration of Leviathan ancestry, the worse it tended to be, but because it wasn't an issue with the first generation, there was a big enough gap that the asari never made the connection.
This could explain why only pureblood asari can be Ardat-Yakshi. Traits taken from the father take precedence over traits inherited from the maternal grandfather or further back, but this only lasts the immediate generation. If the father is an asari, even if neither parent is a pureblood herself (although a pureblood mother likely increases the risk), there is nothing to override the daughter's Leviathan ancestry, and the result is an Ardat-Yakshi.
This might also explain why the husk creation process apparently works differently on Ardat-Yaksh and those with the potential to give birth to Ardat-Yaksh differently than it does other asari.

Interesting... I don't know why the Leviathan connection slipped past me.
The whole thing feels unfinished.. I wish they did more with it or even got some support for what you're saying. I never bought into the idea that Morinth's statements were just bluster too. "Genetic destiny". Samara writes her off, but they wouldn't have put it in there for no reason. Maybe she wasn't entirely right, but I'd at least like to know what she meant.

The only Leviathan + Ardat Yakshi connection I could think off;

Mmmmm....I wish they should alter the Ardat-Yakshi to have an "asset" instead of being sex crazed killers. Just a thought. A dirty one....

Maybe she wasn't entirely right, but I'd at least like to know what she meant. Yeah Morinth was shafted due to being half a character. I'd be inclined to believe the genetic destiny line was bluster. Morinth is a serial killer, nothing more. She's not out on some greater mission for Ardat-Yakshi everywhere, she's not trying to take over anything or build anything, she just goes around killing for the pleasure of it. The ardat-yakshi are obviously meant to be space vampires so look at those tropes. You have the ones that view their kind as a species to be propagated and use their time and powers to make sure their kind thrives. And then you have the ones that are one-dimensional monsters and kill for the evulz. Due perhaps to her hobbled development, Morinth is firmly in the latter camp. Anyway, OP's theory is an interesting one, and it just shows how fertile this setting really was.

Interesting theory.
I never found Morinth particularly interesting as a character, probably because she was as mentioned by CrutchCricket as half a character.
Morinth was also basically the sinister seductress trope meets space vampire. Even recruiting her over Samara, there isn't anything more to gain from her character, and at this stage, the Ardat-Yakshi.
I found the Ardat-Yakshi more compelling when in ME3, you go to the Monastery on Lesuss, and meet Falere and Rila.
Provided you read some of the emails and information found around the various terminals in the monastery, it paints a more richer picture of the Ardat-Yakshi and how they are viewed in asari culture, helping them move away from the more negative aspects of the Ardat-Yakshi that were established with Morinth's character, and makes them less space vampirey as well.

Certainly is a fun fan theory.
Personally I think they are more linked to genetic defects due to the Prothean's forced evolution of the race though genetic engineering.
But that isn't nearly as fun as some Asari/Leviathan cross breed.

She had the potential to be an interesting character but due to half-assed implementation that potential wasn't realized. Like i've mentioned elsewhere on here, the concept of a serial killing hedonist motivated purely by self-survival and wanting to continue her lifestyle ending up as an unlikely savior of the galaxy is a neat one.
