I've noticed a trend of this in recent months. A film will be on and when the credits roll up most people will get up and leave, but not all. Every screening appears to have 2-3 people who will give the film a round of applause as the credits are on. I mean... why? The director isn't hiding behind the screen, letting a tear roll down his cheek at their appreciation. They just look like dickheads.
Am I the only one with a somewhat irrational hatred of the clapping people in cinemas?

It's a little silly, but so is getting really irritated about it. Clapping is an evolved release of energy. It's for expressing appreciation, but that's not just for the person on the receiving end. Those people clapping in the audience are mostly just wanting to share in expressing their approval with the rest of the audience.

Even if the those who worked on the film aren't there, it indicates satisfaction to the theater heads and could possibly affect which movies are being played. If you really enjoyed the show, by all means, show your appreciation.

Am I the only one with a somewhat irrational hatred of the clapping people in cinemas? so your intolerant of special folk is what your basically saying with this poll you realise that special people mimic others by giving applause to shoe their appreciation even if the folks there applauding are not present right ? be happy that some folks with the *tism are in your vicinity and having fun, if you must then smile and shake your head at them, there not doing you any harm by being special so I don't get why you would possibly get so het up about it, unless your one of the pedants that only permits things to be done in the correct place and not only cant understand why others differ actually derive some kind of *tism based pain from their inability to conform to your own special set of views ? if I lived near you and went to the same shows as you I would clap every time just to wind you up

I probably would, it doesn't happen when I go to movies. And I tend to go rather often. I don't think you should clap at the movies, for live performances I get it, but otherwise nah. It's basically the same if a friend put a movie on from DVD and I clapped like a maniac at the end of it. No it's just silly. Makes think you are all kinds of special, especially since in the movie theaters I've been going to, you'd be the only one clapping

I never said they were "special folk", as you put it. no but I can tell you from many years of experience that special folks are always doing such things, they cant differentiate between seeing a show on stage where everyone claps or seeing one on the screen where nobody does, or worse still to really mind fuck them a lot of cinemas now do live hook-ups for theatre shows, and the audience applause is piped into the theatre as well... you know just to really mess with someone ability to mimic proper behaviours..... most special folks learn how to behave in social settings and don't understand the nuances between different types, so they do "odd" things at times...... our local cinema is trying to discourage them from coming by charging extra disabled tickets, but there the only people who use the place during the day or mid week late shows, and there also the only ones who go to see the theatre productions because charities pay for the tickets .... all because they clap when they shouldn't.... oh well its cool cos the abelist wankers that run the place will be out of cash soon and then maybe the bus to the cinema will come back along with cheap disabled tickets (they actually charge double price for a disabled ticket, because you cant go in without an able bodied person and you have to use the premium seats, despite the fact they don't even have seats just space for wheelchair) but me I would hang around in the corridor just so I could open the door right at the end of the film and start clapping

It's terrible that they are treating their customers that way, I do hope that there are other cinemas in the local area that aren't so cruel.

Depends on the movie and/or who I am with. If it is a particularly epic and emotionally satisfying moment, I say go for it. Besides, going to the theatre in this day and age is mostly a communal experience. If you truly have to silence that bad, watch it at home.
