In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

Hello, I am Qui-Gon Glenn and this is the dumbest thread on the Citadel! Intent of thread: I am interested in Dark Souls 2 at the price of $12. My concern: is DS2 a fair place to start the series, or am I a total newblet scum (yes I am) and definitely need to get D1 first to get into the story/character? In general, I did not find a thread that covers whether or not a Humble Bundle game was worth the cheap dollars or no, and thought I might start something valuable to me, and potentially others. So, please answer my question first, and then carry on with Humble Bundle eVALUEations

DS2 is a fine entry point (DS1 has awful optimization and it's easy to get geographically and logically lost there; DS3 has worse PvP). DS1 and DS2 can be played in any order (reasons are story-related and may or may not be explained in either game).
Just in case, DS2: Scholar of the First Sin is harder than the vanilla, but already includes all DLC (which are sold separately for DS2). The True Secret Boss is presented in both versions.
