....I mean...should I quote the likes of old philosophers or the current oxford dictionary? (oxford dictionary definition of the proverb to which I refer: "when the need for something becomes imperative, you are forced to find ways of getting or achieving it." There are a billion sayings that equate to "desperation breeds innovation". Yet, I can't find the "every worthwhile research effort" to which you refer. Anyone willing to suggest that desperation is NOT a good motivator has obviously never been sufficiently desperate to achieve said motivation. Not really, it would probably be better to quote stuff that's relevant. Dictionaries and 'basic sayings' aren't usually the place to look up good management practices. Hell, there are a billion sayings for how verbal abuse has no effect, I guess that means kids committing suicide over cyberbullying are just making a big deal out of nothing, amirite? The 'sayings' say so after all. Just a few examples that took me 30 seconds worth of google that you apparently 'couldn't find': hbr.org/2014/11/let-employees-choose-when-where-and-how-to-workqz.com/210884/threatening-to-fire-workers-doesnt-make-them-more-productive/dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/12/05/reduce-fear-to-create-a-calmer-productive-workplace/The basic premise is that while fear of firing can force you to work harder on unskilled jobs or physical jobs, in a job that requires advanced skills and thinking, it interferes with the employee's productivity (there's a whole biological angle here in the typical fight-or-flight responses actively stifle higher brain processes - it's why a drill sergeant will continuously scream at his rookies to keep up with live rounds being fired but a research lead won't do the same thing with his staff). That's why the only companies that do this tend to be either down-to-the-wire startups that literally have no resources to extend deadlines or clueless cash cow companies that still think it's the 80s. I don't know where on earth you're getting the idea that desperation produces better results but please, take a job interview in the software industry and try to push this canard and see how far you get. You might have gotten a job in Uber up to a few weeks ago with that one, I'll concede that. You're also confusing 'motivators' and 'good motivators'. Clearly, software developers under extreme pressure to deliver... will deliver, but the product will likely be badly thought out and poorly implemented. To paraphrase, anyone pushing such a naive idea has clearly never written software and, by extension, hasn't got a clue what they're talking about.

I have actually seen those studies, but they speak of hardcore management, IE: getting fired for not producing etc... It is not the same thing as struggling to pay yourself. Having someone tell you that you have to do something is psychologically different than motivating yourself to do the same. And this is more of the same dribble from you: "I make software, so I know more than you about the gaming industry."

I have actually seen those studies, but they speak of hardcore management, IE: getting fired for not producing etc... It is not the same thing as struggling to pay yourself. Having someone tell you that you have to do something is psychologically different than motivating yourself to do the same. Dude, you're splitting hairs and you know it. Are you really going to try and claim there's any real difference in this context between losing your job over lack of cash flow and losing your job over a manager's decision? Unless you're the only employee of your company, there literally won't be any difference in the situation you describe. sigh Look, I derive no particular satisfaction or benefit from 'winning' an argument on an internet forum here (whatever that means). You made an assertion, I challenged it, and backed it up with evidence and reasoning, that's all there is. You're free to question that evidence or reasoning in any way you see fit but please, spare me the sulking. As for whether I know more than you - I have no idea. I've only got your argument to judge your knowledge and certainly from what you've said so far, you don't sound like you have any experience at all in this sector. There's nothing particularly wrong with that but I didn't ask you to argue on this, you chose to do so and therefore you're kind of inviting critique. As for the subject... this is basic stuff in software development. It isn't even specific to software development, for that matter - it works for practically any skilled industry. I can't believe you're having such a problem getting it as you don't even need to be a software engineer to grasp the concept.

Have there been any hints from Bioware about a DLC? That would be encouraging..... So far all we really have is nothing in either direction.
