Among the gushing and salty reactions to Anthem, I spotted this thoughtful contribution from radaway, so I thought I'd share it here. The gist of the argument is that a fresh IP is a great opportunity for BioWare and perhaps a very hopeful thing. Being an optimistic person, I'm going to embrace whatever this game is, in the belief that I may enjoy it and not stress about times gone by.

I actually excited for it, and happy that Bioware has introduced this new IP that has been on top of (or close to the top of) every "Best of E3 2017" and "Most anticipated games after E3" lists I've seen. I can't imagine how relieved they feel after all the backlash they've gotten after ME2's "This isn't an RPG!", ME3's "Muh Endings!", and DAI's "Why open world? Too many fetch quests!" ordeal they have been in for the past decade.
I don't usually play games like this, but I'll probably check this one out because it looks really great. Hopefully I can make some online friends and have a group that I play with regularly.

I just hope everyone learned their lesson about hype, pre-ordering, and exaggerated expectations from MEA. I don't understand how anyone can be anything but skeptical about anything Bioware shows at this point. Their word is worthless after hyping up such a flawed product.

There's being skeptical and then there's being pessimistic. I'm not assuming the demo we saw is going to be entirely representative of the final product, but what I saw intrigued me. I invite Bioware to win me over, if they can.

Nah, I already know a game that's all about the grind is not my cup of tea. Redoing the same missions for loot, I'll pass.
Also, this game is clearly something EA ordered them to make for all those sweet microtransactions.
I'm ok with all of it. I'll still get Cyberpunk 2077 someday.

I learned from playing the Division that I actually enjoyed looter shooters but if Anthem can consistently bring story missions to advance the story, it will keep me hooked for a long time.

I don't understand how anyone can be anything but skeptical about anything Bioware shows at this point. Their word is worthless after hyping up such a flawed product. Well, my lesson with Andromeda was that I got to play pretty much what I expected exactly from the information provided, and what I wanted to play very much. What surprised me is how much the game was supported post-release, and how responsive to the feedback the fixes were. I don't remember bioWARE ever doing it, not even for SWTOR.
If Anthem manages to demonstrate that it is exactly what I want to play, despite being a deviation from BioWare's tried and true formula since 1998, I will pre-order & play on day one. They have a way to go though.

I do think Anthem is the right direction for BioWare to go. I think that because the teams that have created Mass Effect and Dragon Age have nearly all but left those franchises, and been replaced with new people, that's why those games recently have felt lackluster. The story isn't as compelling, because the people that thought up that universe aren't telling these stories anymore. It would be like someone else finishing the A Song of Ice and Fire books should G.R.R.Martin die before they're finished...
With a new IP, I think they have the chance to build something completely new and exciting that doesn't have an established lore or setting yet. They can literally do whatever they want. They have a brand new sandbox to play in, instead of trying to find somewhere in the sandboxes that are already filled with sandcastles - except they're made out of stone.
I also think that the general direction they've taken the new IP is a good one. There isn't anything saying that BioWare just creates single-player RPGs. Sure, that's what they've just made in the past, but that also confines them. By branching into a more social scene, they are paving the way for the next generation of RPGs. With their talent at creating RPG worlds, and their willingness to delve into a genre that isn't typical for RPGs, they can create something truly astounding and brilliant. I honestly think if they can pull it off, Anthem will be the greatest thing for BioWare since the original Mass Effect.

They have a way to go though. You're in the minority. Sources: Metacritic, fan backlash, EA putting the franchise on ice. Glad you enjoyed it though, wish I could. The game crashes every single session (still), it has scores of bugs, and the writing is the worst I've witnessed in recent memory (I do try to avoid bad games though, so I'm sure there are even worse examples out there).

Well, sucks to be you, and that metacrtitic guy whoever he is. I really enjoyed the writing. To me it's like Jade Empire in Space and the landscapes are awesome. Characters are quirky and fun. It's the bio I remember & it restored my faith after it was shattered by Inquisition. If Anthem's writing will be just as fun/non-pompous and saturated for environmental banter, I'd love it. I have zero crushes and only a few minor bugs like a repeat VO or a floating creature. My hang ups about Anthem is lack of companionship if I play solo & worries about gearing. Andromeda is stellar on both fronts, so won't hurt to take a leaf from its book for that too.

I remain open minded but cautious about this game. I really want them to come out with a slam dunk for Anthem even if it's not necessarily my kind of game.
