- Scammers are exploiting mobile network number ports to steal from Australians - Fraudsters port a target's number to sim card they own then use it as verification - Experts say $10 million has been swindled from Australians in the last 12 months
Scammers are exploiting mobile phone network providers to steal from Australians – and it can happen in minutes.
The scam involves porting mobile phone numbers to a new sim card, owned by the fraudsters, which they can then use as a form of identification.
Lisa Johnson told 9News of her experience with the scam, saying that she answered a nondescript phone call which immediately hung up.
... I'm not sure if the method used by the criminals would be the same outside of Australia.

- Archbishop swings naked boy by his arms and repeatedly dunks him in the basin - It is believed video was filmed in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, at a Greek Orthodox church - Church does 'forceful' baptisms as it's seen as solution to declining birth rates
Twitter users have been outraged after bizarre footage emerged on social media showing a Greek Orthodox bishop violently baptising a baby in water.
In the clip the Archbishop swings the naked child by its arms and repeatedly dunks him in the baptismal font.
The clergyman dips the boy in the basin three times before handing him back to the parents who seem totally unfazed.
It is believed the clip was filmed in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, at a Greek Orthodox church.
It is tradition for Greek Orthodox churches to perform 'forceful' baptisms because it is seen as a solution to the declining birth rate.
...
I don't see how "forceful" baptisms would have any effect on the birth rate...

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — If you faithfully read food labels you’ve probably come across ingredients you can’t pronounce let alone describe.
CBS2’s Crystal Cruz reports that many of your favorite snacks contain such bizarre things as bug parts and there are other odd additives lurking in your food.
Just know, that many pf your favorite foods are filled with items you would never suspect. And most likely things you wouldn’t knowingly put in your mouth.
Dr. John Swartzberg, of Berkeley’s School of Public Health recently examined a smorgasbord of foods, all containing weird, shocking ingredients.
We asked mom Juliet and her daughter, Rosie, to play along with the “What is it?” game.
First up, shredded cheese.
It contains powdered cellulose.
“Well, cellulose if a plant product and it made tom a variety of plants, including, of course, wood,” says Swartzberg.
The cellulose keeps your cheese from clumping. (Raise your hand if you don’t mind clumpy cheese.)
“The more cellulose you put in,” Swartzberg says, “and it’s very cheap to make, the more money you make.”
In some frozen burritos, snacks and pizza, there is a product called L.-Cysteine.
That product you might never have heard of is an amino acid. But it’s not just any amino acid.
“This particular amino acid is made from hair or duck feathers,” Swartzberg says.
It’s used as a dough conditioner to improve the texture. Duck feathers. Blecch.
Then there is Carmine, an ingredient often found in some red juices and yogurts. Carmine is a natural red food dye made by …boiling…cochineal insects. Gulp.
“If they ground them up, it makes a beautiful red dye,” Swartzberg says.
Then we get to granulated sugar. What makes it so sparkly white?
Sitting down?
Some brands use charred animal bones or bone char.
When it comes to alcohol, you might want a glass about now. Or maybe not. In some white wines and some beers makers use a special filtration process called Insinglass.
“It’s made from bladders of bony fish,” Swartberg says.
Lost your appetite yet?
How about those shiny little jelly beans. On the label it says “Confectioner’s Glaze.”
And what is that?
It’s shellac, made specifically from insects in Asia. The same shellac as in …wood finish.
Swartzberg sas all the ingredients are legal. The FDA classifies them all as “generally recognized as ‘safe’ or ‘grass’ for short.

Former Alaska state senator Johnny Ellis took in the sights of Puget Sound on Monday. In one photo posted to Twitter, Ellis grins with the Cascade Mountains rising in the background.
His views on Alaska Airlines flight 107 to Anchorage later that day were less majestic.
Ellis was among the passengers who witnessed a naked man tear down the aisle upon the plane’s descent, yelling and waving in a commotion before he was tackled by passengers and locked in a bathroom, Ellis later said on Twitter.
In a statement, Alaska Airlines said the aircraft landed “without incident,” with law enforcement boarding the aircraft at the gate to detain the man. He was then transported to a hospital, the company said. Ellis said in a subsequent tweet that passengers speculated the man’s father was one of the “2 big guys” who tackled him. Ellis did not immediately return a request for comment.
Another passenger, Yahoo News reporter Daniel Roberts, said on Twitter that the man appeared to be in his early 20s and that the incident was “very scary at first.”
But people do have a way of seeing bizarre incidents with a different perspective once the confusion subsides, Roberts noted. “Many now laughing,” Roberts wrote on Twitter, apparently while the man was still restrained.
Ellis, a Democrat who left the Alaska Senate in 2016 after three decades in office, has recently been treated for prostate cancer and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. But that has not wavered his involvement in state politics. He has often tweeted to support public education funding, and he met with Alaska Gov. Bill Walker (R) in April.
After things had calmed down and the plane had landed, Ellis waited for a wheelchair and was second to last off the plane, he wrote on Twitter.

- Mumsnet users mocked new mother who set out rules for her visitors - The mother said guests must help with the housework if they want to visit her - She also said smokers must change their clothes before they hug the baby
All parents worry about their children, but one mum-to-be has been mocked for enforcing an extremely strict set of rules ahead of her new arrival.
Mumsnet user Frenchwolf86, believed to be from the UK, came under fire after revealing the 13 rules she expects all visitors to follow when they come to meet her newborn baby.
The guidelines include a change of clothes after smoking and even helping out with housework in return for cuddles with the infant.
But the expectant mother has been mocked by other Mumsnet users, who joked that she wouldn't get many visitors if she enforced the rules.
Frenchwolf86 kicked off the discussion by asking fellow mums if she was being unreasonable for asking people to follow the rules.
She wants prospective visitors to be extra clean, which means washing their hands every time they hold the baby and no visiting if they've recently been ill, she explained.
The mum-to-be also stipulated that feeding time is private, the baby needs to sleep only in her crib and she cannot be posted about on social media.
But perhaps the most extreme rule on the list was her request that visitors help with the housework if they come to spend time with the baby.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS - A pair of lovers were caught having sex by a priest beneath a statue of the Virgin Mary at a Roman Catholic church in the borough on Tuesday afternoon, confirmed Police Chief Tommy Boyd.
Anthony Michael Getchius, 43, of Newark and Noelle Marie Smart, 48, of Jersey City, were each charged with lewdness for the alleged copulation in what authorities described as “a sacred area” on the grounds of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Grant Avenue.
The incident took place in a secluded garden located between the church and the rectory, Boyd said. Visit the scene of the alleged incident in the video above <available via link>.
After multiple officers raced to the scene at about 12:30 p.m., they observed the couple fully engaged in the act of coitus, Boyd said.
In addition to lewdness, police also determined that Getchius should be charged with creating a dangerous condition and obstructing the law, according to records on file at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River on Tuesday night.
The pair – who each identified themselves as single on their booking forms – are incarcerated at the jail pending a bail hearing on Wednesday.
The church is located next door to the Seaside Heights Police Department.

(CBS Local) – Scientists say they have discovered the next superfood that’s a perfect non-dairy alternative. However, they may have a hard time getting people to try cockroach milk.
Using a 2016 report on the benefits of insect dairy, scientists found that the Pacific Beetle cockroach of Hawaii possesses nutrient-filled milk crystals, which they use to feed their young. “A single crystal is estimated to contain more than three times the energy of an equivalent mass of dairy milk,” the report stated.
The study published in the Journal of the International Union of Crystallography also found that the milk-like superfood was full of amino acids and sugar-coated proteins, which makes this a natural gold mine for humans.
Some companies are already trying to get ahead of the trend by selling the bug juice in everything from milk to ice cream. “Think of Entomilk as a sustainable, nature-friendly, nutritious, lactose free, delicious, guilt-free dairy alternative of the future,” South African company Gourmet Grubb writes.
Scientists and entrepreneurs both admit this trend may take some serious work to convince people they should switch to a bug-heavy diet. “Yes, there will be people who think [insects] are icky or have a yuck factor, but the ingredients are so versatile,” Jarrod Goldin of Canada’s Entomo Farms said, via Global News.

A husband in Oregon recently received a strange telephone call from his boss that went like this: Unplug your Alexa. You’re being hacked.
Except he wasn’t being hacked.
His Amazon Echo gadget — the one that’s supposed to be that kindly, artificially intelligent-powered voice of in-home service that tells everything from the current time and date to which items on your to-do list need getting done — had gone rogue, so to speak.
The device had actually recorded conversations between the man and his wife, and then sent them along to the man’s boss as audio file attachments. All this, without the couple’s permission or specific instruction — all that, secretly, absent the husband’s or wife’s knowledge.
Creepy?
To say the least. What comes to mind, in fact, is the big screens of Big Brother that were to stay on at all times in the homes envisioned by George Orwell in his “1984.” The fictional government: Always watching, ever listening.
It’s the stuff of A.I. nightmares, that’s for sure.
Amazon spokespeople admitted the couple had been victimized by an “unlikely” and unfortunate “string of events” that led their Echo to misinterpret noise in the background as instead, commands to record and send.
Unlikely or not, the damage is done.
“I felt invaded,” said the woman, in an interview with the local KIRO 7 channel. “Immediately, I said, ‘I’m never plugging that device in again, because I can’t trust it.’”
And therein lies the problem with much of this newfangled, modern technology. Some simply hasn’t been around long enough to test for soundness.
The tech company rush to beat the competition and get the next cool gadget to market has left the consumer, often unwittingly, as serving in the rather uncomfortable dual role of both buyer and guinea pig.
And what’s even worse is that this Oregon couple may be just one of many who’ve experience the same privacy horror. Amazon may deny. But fact is, we just don’t know.

- The tiny kitten was rescued in woodland by a concerned passerby - Wildlife crime officers in Derbyshire said she was about to be used as bait - One of the thugs is described as having a swallow tattoo on his neck
A group of thugs has been slammed as ‘cruel’ and ‘vile scum of the earth’ after abusing a kitten by binding her stomach and paws with cable ties and duct tape.
The animal was rescued by a passerby in woodland, and was about to be used to bait ferrets and dogs.
The Derbyshire police wildlife crime team is seeking information after the small kitten, a tortoiseshell, after she was saved by a concerned passing member of the public.
Appealing for help via Facebook, the wildlife officer asked for help to track down ‘four or five men who had a small kitten which had its feet bound with cable ties and its body bound with masking-type tape.
‘These males also had with them a number of ferrets and dogs.’
‘This small kitten was clearly destined to be used as some kind of bait for the ferrets and dogs.’
The wildlife officer said that among the group abusing the animal was one man with a swallow tattoo on his neck, while the remainder had tattoos on their hands.
All were described as wearing tracksuits, and were believed to be aged in their 20s or 30s.
The kitten was rescued from woodland between Unstone Green, a village in Chesterfield, and the A61 at the Sheepbridge Industrial estate, and is now 'safe and well', officers said.
Derbyshire Live reports that she is living with a new owner – the person who found and rescued the feline – and is now caring for her.
People responding to the wildlife team’s appeal on Facebook have written of their outrage at the ‘pieces of scum’ who abused the kitten.
One woman posted: ‘Such evil people. They are callous thugs. Thank heaven somebody cared enough to save the little one.’

MILAN (AP) — Officials at the Pompeii archaeological site have announced a dramatic new discovery, the skeleton of a man crushed by an enormous stone while trying to flee the explosion of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
Pompeii officials on Tuesday released a photograph showing the skeleton protruding from beneath a large block of stone that may have been a door jamb that had been "violently thrown by the volcanic cloud."
The victim, who was over 30, had his thorax crushed. Archaeologists have not found the victim's head. Officials said the man suffered an infection of the tibia, which may have caused walking difficulties, impeding his escape.
The archaeological site's general director, Massimo Osanna, called it "an exceptional find," that contributes to a better "picture of the history and civilization of the age."

- Footage shows a flower seller place her hand straight down a customers top - The customer was taking a picture of her friends in a pub and was unaware - She later noticed it after looking back at video footage taken by her friend who called the seller a 'top robber'
A bizarre video shows the moment an elderly flower seller in a pub slips her hand down a woman's top but appears to not touch her while she's taking a photo of her friends.
The clip, filmed at Central Bar in Middlesbrough last weekend, begins with Abbie Morley sitting down while the flower seller hands a rose to another girl.
The 'Rose Woman' passes the flower across Miss Morley to another couple and - as Miss Morley takes a photograph of her friends posing - appears to put her hand down Miss Morley's top.
