It's already Mecha vs Kaiju from my point of view. It's just that the Kaiju aren't Godzilla sized...yet.
That's also why I think it looks more like God Eater than Attack on Titan if you need to compare Anthem to a Japanese anime/game/manga.
Oh also, the platform from where the Javelins throw themselves into the world has railguns, made me think that their might be flying monsters around...

That would be sweet. If that is a thing, I'm hoping we will get a mission or two that tasks us with defending The Wall from such a monster. In my head, it would be visually stunning if done right.

I do hope there are some larger monster, though I worry about how they would make fighting one engaging without just making it a huge health bar.

Have different stages in the combat, instead of one big bullet sponge soaking up all your damage. For example, first you have to lure it, then you have to climb it, then you have to cut it open with a two manned machine while the other two fight off enemies, then you enter his belly, etc.

Seems likely that there will be kaiju/cloverfield sized beasties to conquer, but I kind of worry that those will only happen in a raid/strike style of gameplay. Meaning, MP or nothing.

Seems likely that there will be kaiju/cloverfield sized beasties to conquer, but I kind of worry that those will only happen in a raid/strike style of gameplay. Meaning, MP or nothing. Yeah, that's a fair concern. Though with all the talk about being able to play SP, maybe the big challenges will scale with the number of people you have. (And assuming there are Kaiju in the game ofc...)
Though it might be interesting if the goal wasn't to kill the Kaiju (maybe they're just too big/too tough to kill), but to drive them off. Drive them away from destroying a convoy, or attacking the city, and so on. Big, named Kaiju then live on like Godzilla/Rodan/etc., and you just try to weather the storm when they make an appearance...

I really hate that word. Unless you're Japanese, just say giant monster ffs Why? Kaiju is more compact, genre-specific, and arguably more respectful of the trope's cultural origin. It's almost universally more appropriate. And what's stopping English-speakers from using international vocabulary? Should we stop using doppelgänger because we're not German or robot because we're not Russian? More to the point of the thread, however, I'd be more than a little disappointed if we saw giant enemies (be they machines, ships, or aliens) and didn't get to use our flight suits to fight them. Not enough games let us fight massive enemies on the same ground.

Though I am a huge Godzilla fan, so it's possible I just run across it more... Agreed on the point of tackling them with the exo-suits. I'm curious to see what combat in flight is like. From the video, it looks like you can have your weapon drawn while jet-jumping and falling (and I assume while hovering), but as soon as you're flying horizontal it looks like your weapon is automatically stowed away. So maybe no high-speed strafing.

From the video, it looks like you can have your weapon drawn while jet-jumping and falling (and I assume while hovering), but as soon as you're flying horizontal it looks like your weapon is automatically stowed away. So maybe no high-speed strafing. Having pondered the concepts of jetpacks in game design for a while, I'm currently of the mind that it's probably better if the player can't fight while flying. In theory, this sounds incredibly lame. Why limit the player like that? The problem is that flying, specifically with a jetpack, is usually OP in a kinda boring way. The most obvious imbalance would be melee enemies; unless they have a specific grapple move as a counter, you can effectively trivialize that entire genre of enemy. Even ranged enemies are at a disadvantage if your jetpack is relatively quick; flanking them is a breeze, and avoiding fire is much easier as well. The only enemies that would be most capable against you would be other flying enemies, and at that point, you might as well make your game a dogfighter (with all the level design affordances that must come with it). So rather than use jetpacks as a combat vehicle, jetpacks are better off being plane changers, like an extended dodge or teleport. That means the player can leverage the extra verticality and flanking options without giving them too much power. This inherently makes balance a bit simpler, but it has the added benefit of giving combat potential for multiple phases: in one, the player is on the offensive, worrying about their aiming and power usage, while in the other, they worry about maneuvering, good placement, and how they'll next attack. An alternative nerf would be a parkour system like Titanfall's or the absurdly acrobatic movement systems of certain arena shooters. You can shoot while flying around, but given how challenging it is to shoot and fly around like a maniac, it balances out. What this means for big boss fights potential for more spectacle and variety. Rather than flying around and shooting at weak points (which, I imagine, is what most flying games have you do with their bosses), you're fighting on top of some part of an enemy, taking out critical systems or some such, getting a brief flying section which might involve dodging obstacles or watching some spectacle (like watching the limb you just severed from a kaiju fall dramatically to the ground), and then landing on some other part and doing it again. Of course, that's assuming the mechs are our only vehicles... As for term kaiju, the term is perfectly apropos. No reason not to use it other than strange vendettas against culture-specific vocabulary. And after Pacific Rim everyone should probably have heard it. If not, Google is a tab away.
