Saw the new "The Mummy" film today, and it wasn't bad. The reviews were super poor and the theatre was completely empty! What gives? The movie wasn't any worse than most other Tom Cruise films (not a fan BTW), and I was actually entertained for most of it until the silly ending.
Have standards risen? Will this year see an end to the Transformer movies FINALLY?

Return of the Sentimental Swordsman (1981) 8/10 Great movie, better than the first movie. Awesome characters and actors, great fights, interesting plot. If the visual effects were better it would get the great score. 2 fight scenes from it:

Just got back from Spidey: Homecoming, & it didn't disappoint. Solid Spider-Man flick, true to the books, great action, pretty awesome cast from top to bottom. 8/10 I have a few small gripes, the "teen-age" tropes are a bit tired, one of the actresses rolls her eyes with almost every line. Perhaps this is not strange to some millennial audience members, but I found it annoying and contrived. Also the villains were a bit thin & cliche, with the exception of Michael Keaton's Toomes who is very good. (Vulture rivals Molina's Octavius as the best movie Spidey villain IMHO) Also the appearance of Tony Stark felt a bit too convenient in one scene & a bit clownish in another. He is still perfectly portrayed by RDJ, and his mentoring Parker is a cool new dimension to both characters I was excited to finally see in the films. Marisa Tomei is beautifully maternal & grounding as Aunt May. Beware, the Post-credit scenes are a bit of a prank this time around. (Thanks Kevin F & Marvel, ya got me ) I am stoked for Thor 3/Black Panther!

It doesn't offer any MCU tidbits, so I suppose a casual movie-goer could skip it & just wait for Infinity Wars

Trailer contains a few larger spoilers.
Dark Song is film that escaped notice and is really quite good for its genre. It's a well researched occult psychological horror. It's based around the experience of two people performing a ceremony based on the work of Abramelin the Mage. The Abramelin working is most commonly known as the rite performed by Aleister Crowley at his home in Boleskine, Scotland. A rite left unfinished which purportedly left the property haunted. The home has attracted many curious people and stories. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin owned the property at one time. The house burned down during the winter solstice in 2015. Working Abramelin is said to be stressful and dangerous, even to the most enduring minds. This film conveys this myth well. The dialogue does expect some knowledge on the part of the viewer on the subject of occultism and related studies to fully appreciate. However, if a viewer has an artistic mindset and appreciates films like Lars Trier's Melancholia this should be a film to consider watching.

It's one of my favorite books and Disney has maimed it on screen before, so my hopes are...fragile. It looks visually compelling at least. And Chris Pine won me over in Wonder Woman pretty completely.

After catching up on some rewatches with The Others and Burn Notice, my revisit to Black Swan is the kind of experience I'd wait years to see. I always admired Natalie Portman's dark beauty in that role. The elegance and femininity(with a small slice of crazy) she holds goes beyond just a person, and becomes a sonorous presence I'd aspire to. The second watch gave me this anachronistic sense of deja vu, as my *other* favorite movie ( Whiplash) has remarkable narrative ties to Aronofsky's Slice of Tenebrous Delicacy. The film's very artsy, but the majority embraces a realism less interested in being for show, and more in weaving atypical narratives for its cast. The magnetic pull you see between Nina and the Teacher(played by Vincent Cassel) shares a classic parallel between the student and teacher. As much as I enjoy gifts of favor from friends and family(almost akin to portrayals of celebrities and their fandoms), what flows between both the films and these captivating personalities is the growth from simply being in each other's company and learning from the day-to-day surrealities. It's a form of love, I think. My one striking fear is that within this lifetime, seeing a character that hermetic or a story that hard-hitting could only be reached within the metal case of glass in front of me. It's a story with soul...and those looking hard enough could find a hoard of thoughtful musings and veiled symbolisms, all hiding in plain sight. It's not a 10 out of 10. A number can't pinpoint the ripple it's had on me. I will treasure it, always.

I just saw Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan. 6.5/10 DO NOT consider seeing this film unless you are a die-hard war movie buff, as you may be bored to tears. I enjoyed the cinematography & the acting for what they were, but this movie was lacking. It seemed a bit like a successful filmmaker having fun, shooting a movie he had always wanted to make, but never had the time or extra $ to dedicate to it. Nolan deserves to play in his proverbial sandbox, he has made more than one masterpiece IMHO. He has brought us action, comic book villians & neo-noir mysteries. He deserves to enjoy himself & indulge in his craft. This movie isn't great, but it's not awful either. It was paced & edited in a very realistic way. What I mean by that is there were no "cliche action scenes" or predictable set pieces. Events unfolded in a very practical and unflinching way. For a war film, this is a good thing. I, personally just didn't find any character appealing or easy to identify with. Go into this knowing as much about the actual historic battle at Dunkirk as possible. It might enhance the experience

Well, I finally, after years of knowing I needed to see it, watched Fight Club. Bought a used copy for $3 and gave it a whirl.
My thoughts:
It's a VERY good movie. I unhappily knew the twist in the film going in, but knowing the twist doesn't make the movie any worse. I spend one half the film disgusted, the other half memorized. And it is MUCH funnier than I was told it would be.
I can't say I agree with a lot of the morality it portrays. It's very nihilistic, though not completely so. On the other hand, it's one of those films that makes no judgements about the morality it portrays. It doesn't say "This morality is good" or "this morality is bad". It just says "This is an experience. Make of it what you will." It's more about presenting a problem than it is about finding a solution. In that regard, I rather enjoyed it.
