Yeaaaah, I can see a connection there... See, Vavra, a looong time ago, worked on Mafia... That said, it serves a narrative purpose that makes it all fit together, in both cases. I'm not angry. The claustrophobic feeling actually added some juice to that part of the game, and I found myself that much closer to Henry. I would disagree with that heavily. The race in Mafia served no narrative purpose, but arguably all the missions in Mafia save for the last 6 or so didn't because all it was, in the end, was a vignette-styled point of view of the Mafia world from outsiders. The Monastery they tied it to the main quest, but they could have easily put Pious into a different circumstance that was not separate from the outside world. Hell, they could have just had you join the gang through some other means without it by that point, have you go and kill some random folks to prove your willing to do anything. It would just take a simple rewrite for Kingdom Come...something the game kind of needed at points frankly. Mafia was a game about driving cars, the controls were just atrocious for racing. And having a monastery mystery story - with a real monastery as blueprint in Sasau (I guess there is one real?) - I can see falling for that. It's typically "medieval" stuff and "The name of the Rose" did it well, too. It's just that Henry isn't a monk, and the players likely aren't neither and it's them who drive the narrative.

Actually, the monastery exists and looks pretty much like the game depiction in terms of layout.
The place where the master engravers work exists, the place between that and the monastery (mill) exists (precise layouts, too) and the church is in the same location. The main square in the game can still be recognized on modern maps. Vranik actually exists, and the ruins of Talmberg suggest the castle in game is accurate. Pirkstein castle is accurate to the point you can recognize the location from the game as well. The upper castle in Rattay is right there, all things considered. On modern maps, you can find the Rattay square/market under the name of "Peace Square". Neuhof never recovered from a certain event (maybe even the one depicted in game, what do I know) and eventually was rebuilt under a different name. It is currently on the outskirts of Rattay proper. Kuchelnik mill (where you go as part of Peshek's quest) is right where you'd be looking for it relative to Rattay, same for Ledecko.
Neuhof-Rattay-Ledecko-Vranik, Talmberg-Samopesh-Merhojed-Uzhitz are all placed correctly relative to each other in those groups. Pribyslavitz and Skalitz had their locations completely adjusted.
The game world is fairly accurate, even though on a real map you'd be more likely to find Cekanov if you were looking for Skalitz according to in-game maps, and Pribyslavitz is completely off (actually being north of where Skalitz really is)

If you want one example where the historical realism conflicts with the narrative and game mechanics heavily, its the Needle in the Haystack questline.

Finished the Monastery. Didn't kill anybody (including Pious, who is in Rattay's prison at the moment). Then I headed straight to Vraník. Then I ran away from Vraník. Then I charged straight against Vraník. In the next quest, I screwed up the stealth mission on Talmberk. Luckily, it doesn't mean game over. I guess I'm reaching the end of the game at this point.

THAT'S the ending?
...that's the ending.
And the combat mechanics are an...acquired taste as is, but man, those larger battles towards the end with a ton of people flailing about both on your side and against you. Just a mess, intensely unenjoyable. And a slideshow (the game has by and large run at ~50-60* FPS for me with some tweaking up until this). "Fortunately" you actually don't have to do anything to win those battles, since your allies beast their way through it.
*I set the cap at 60 to level things out so the variations wouldn't be as drastic in some cases

It is a flawed game. But I am curious to see where Warhorse goes from here with a sequel. I think this could be a great game with a bit more refinement. I'm still in the monastery part of the game, so my impression may not be accurate based on what's to come. But story-wise, I think they're trying to fit a story and a half into a single game. I can totally believe that this is actually the first TWO entries into a trilogy: Henry's origin story, and his adventures as Sir Radzig's squire. The problem is, the second story isn't as fleshed out as the first. I get the impression some stuff has been left out, either cut for time or being held for a follow-up. In particular, the relationship between Sir Radzig and Henry's father never seemed to be properly addressed. And I suspect it was a huge factor in Henry's meteoric rise in status. It doesn't really get addressed by the tail end either, at least not to a satisfying conclusion. I can say that much at least. Given what I HAVE learned, I find that very disappointing...

Given what I HAVE learned, I find that very disappointing... Can I safely say I called it yet pages ago? Well... I suspected nearly from the start that Henry had noble blood in him, (if not that he was Radzig's son) and that Sir Radzig knew it. I just figured his father was some noble in hiding or something. There was a massive gulf between commoners and nobility back then. How else to explain the friendship between Henry's "father" and Radzig, and why he took Henry under his wing so easily?

I just finished the game and... I was pretty satisfied. Sure, they could resolve at least the sword plot right there and allow Henry to kill Istvan, but I liked the way they handled it. After all, Istvan was always presented as someone with back-up plan, quick wits and having an upper-hand. Though I hope this part of story won't be unnecessarily prolonged in sequel(s). In fact, I hope it will be finished in the first part of sequel and Henry will suffer consequences because of it (which is something he dodged right now - had he attacked Istvan and his lackey, they would kill both Racek and Štěpánka. Luckily, there were others to talk him out if it).
I'm pretty much reconciled with the fact you can't have everything. After all, the world didn't resolve around Henry and his revenge. And I'm okay with that.
I like one of the Racek's final speech (the one he gaves when he's released near Skalice) and it pretty much sums up what I think about ending of this act. Henry's personal vendetta isn't over yet, but more important things were protected and saved, even if the villain still lives.
The only thing I really disliked was that 10 minute long ride with Ptáček. They could just make a cutscene. As for my gameplay style: Combat (longsword) and speech skills were pretty much on highest levels of all abilities. I never tried to do much of alchemy (except for Sejvovice/Savirour's schanpps, healing potion and some things related to quests), but I liked the concept of preparing potions by yourself (and I actually never failed in brewing). Next time, I'll try to use poisons. I rarely used thief skills until last third of the game. I'll play again in few months or after DLC is released and try to change my playstyle a bit. Oh, one more thing. Almost forgot. FUCK THE MONASTERY. NEXT TIME, I'M KILLING ANTONÍN RIGHT AWAY! THEN I SLAUGHTER EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THAT USELESS MONKS, LOOT ALL THE ROOMS AND BURN THE BUILDING TO GROUND, IF GAME ALLOWS ME TO SET AT LEAST SMALL FIRE!

Wine you can't drink, long sequences where you have to wait before you can move without worrying that monks-patrol won't catch you, no schnapps to save and those books written in latin are unreadable because you can't distinguish letters from each other. If they really wanted to preserve knowledge, they should write in normal way, not as if they wanted to win the prize in "most artistic crap you'll ever see on paper"! Seriously, alchemy was the only thing I enjoyed about regular routine. Next time, I'm going to slit everyone's throat during the first night...

Try researching them to uncover information about the cult of St. Demitrios, who may or may not have existed in France in the 12th century. That was a master history class I had to do once. It was not fun.

For future character building, does anyone know if:
1) Fighting with short swords and sabers enhances dexterity faster than strenght (I used longswords the whole game and at the end, I had my strength on level 17 or so. Dexterity was progressing much slower)? I just want to be sure, because there's a perk under dexterity that seems quite useful for them. 2) Is it better idea to specialize in one weapon or to have at least two? I didn't have much problem with combat, but some fights were taking quite long because I used longsword against foes with heavy armor. On the other hand, my skills with axes and maces were painfully low while swords were almost maxed out.

Is it just me or was the epilogue one long exposition dump on what everything that happened meant In The Grand Scheme of Things as well as a hook to the sequel?
Also, Brian Blessed? I thought Konrad sounded familiar!

This will be the main attribute that enhances when using that weapon item. You can just stick to swords, something is off with the ripostes and maces - I was surprised to find out it fricken auto-counters when you use swords. I didn't do like that when I played my 1st playthrough with maces. I found that auto-counter a tad OP for my liking.
