I grew tired of the combat and gave up on this one awhile ago. It might be time to give it another shot... Hmm....is there too much of it, or what was the issue with the combat?

I just found it tedious and unwieldy. It’s intended as a bit more of an accurate simulation of an actual fight than most games go for, which means taking on more than one fighter at a time can be very difficult. The advice previously given is warranted: avoid a fair or even fight wherever possible.

Well, I'll try the unfair and sneaky approach - that fits my preferences anyway - and if things get too annoying I have ways around that.

I use cheats for the combat and the lockpicking. I find the combat challenging really, fine if it's one and one and even then I still have problems. I resorted to cheats because I was struggling too much in group fights. I find LP frustrating so swish, in comes the cheat. One click, voila! Open sesame!

I resorted to cheats because I was struggling too much in group fights. I find LP frustrating so swish, in comes the cheat. One click, voila! Open sesame! I'm getting the hang of lockpicking - no broken picks for three locks in a row - though I might start to cheat if it gets too old. I have installed a mod for a bow reticle, which makes shooting actually enjoyable rather than frustrating. So far I didn't have any problems in swordfights I must win. I lost with the sword against Hans Capon, but that was apparently expected. I won with the bow, even before the mod, which was apparently unexpected, but otherwise I only faced low-level bandits who were no problem even with my mediocre skills. I also have a mod named "Keep Clean Longer" and a third one for unlimited saves.
We'll see how it goes, though I'm definitely going on as more of a talker and sneaker than a fighter.

NECRO!
I’ve been playing this a bit recently, using it’s Ultra High settings to test out the new GPU.
Got my first new achievement in the game for nearly 2 full years.
Seem to be getting the hang of combat (although more than two at a time is near impossible - as it should be). Don’t like the inventory management much, but at least you can easily transfer stuff to your horses saddlebags if you are near it.

It’s intended as a bit more of an accurate simulation of an actual fight than most games go for, which means taking on more than one fighter at a time can be very difficult. The advice previously given is warranted: avoid a fair or even fight wherever possible. Difficulty curve is definitely weird on this one. At first you get your ass kicked if you run into anything but a buck-naked antisocial bandit, and you'll have to actively seek out training and practice to get a hold on the melee system to be effective against any real challenge, and even then you're dead meat in a flash against more than one enemy. Then you get a proper suit of armor and suddenly turn into a steel wrecking ball against anything but another steel suit, which just becomes a war of attrition. Then you learn to put the mace to good use and move fairly quickly even in full plate, and get to leave a trail of crushed tin cans where there used to be groups of enemy knights. I think the system is fun as it is, but could benefit from being simpler and more intuitive. The fact that you have to relearn it from scratch every time you return to the game after a while means that it's real easy to fall out of a playthrough. Combined with the quests being so flimsy in terms of UI guidance and connective dialogue, getting back into it after half a year or a year in the middle of one story arc becomes a huge drag. Might as well start over then, and get the story and atmosphere fresh. At which point you'll run into the same problem all over again when you start running out of steam. Game should have been shorter and/or more condensed for you to get the full benefit of the skill-based combat, to my mind.
