This one is probably for those old-timers who started playing Origins back in 2009....
As always, I've done everything backwards... On the Nexus Mods, I always noted with curiosity those mods designed to give companions the look they had in some trailer or weapons and armor used in those trailers, etc. So, by accident, I actually viewed those trailers today. I noted what I guess was supposed to be the PC Warden -- the guy who looks like Arnold Schwarzeneger as the Terminator. I notice the armor he was wearing had the GW emblem on it. So, what happened? Why did the Wardens go through Origins without any special gear except what you pull off the corpse of Sofia? It never fails to amaze me how NPCs recognize the PC as a GW no matter what he/she is wearing. (Does the "taint" come with a specific odor?)

I'm not sure. I think that it was one of the things they wanted to add but didn't end up adding until the second game came out (like how tranquils didn't have the mark on their forehead until the second game) I guess the same applies to the warden armor.
I think everyone knows you're the wardens because Loghain gave a description what they look like (at least that seemed to be the case in Lothering) or maybe word just gets around fast. Like really fast.

It's kind of ironic that the armor the terminator-like warden is wearing in the Origins trailers is actually more like the armor wardens wear in DAI rather than DA2, particularly the helmet. Oh well...

With the armor, you have to figure you were new to the Wardens at Ostagar so there really wasn't much chance to have an armor fitting done as things progressed rapidly once arriving. The question I have always had is why didn't Grey Warden armor get added in the Return to Ostagar DLC? That would have been a fitting time to put some in. As for how people know you are a Grey Warden, people in Lothering and Denerim state descriptions. The sergeant in Denerim says your likeness was passed around to the guards. I would imagine Loghain would have been keen to get the descriptions spread quickly once it was known that Grey Wardens survived.

The thing is, neither Duncan nor Riordan have distinctive Grey Warden armor either. For that matter, Alistair should have had GW armor given that he was already in the Wardens. If anything, you would think some Warden armor could've been dug up at Soldiers' Peak aside from Sophia's armor. Or perhaps Levi's brother could've sold some sets.

With those higher up like Duncan, I could see leeway being given on what they wear. Riordan was naked when found so that is explainable in that manner. However, you do have a point with Alistair. He was in the Wardens for months by that point and should have had some sort of distinguishable armor. I never thought much about Soldier's Peak since it had been abandoned and picked over for so long. Overall it was definitely a design oversight in the game. I loved the Grey Warden armor in DA2 and I do wish it would have been a staple in Origins too.

The problem is that it causes problems in the Soldiers Peak DLC with Sophia's armor becoming invisible. Oh well...
