I wonder which visual effects they'll give tel'aran'rhiod. My guess is mostly color filters but I am curious. Otherwise, yea, as was already mentioned, the adaptation of Perrin's thing will be interesting. Especially because it's not just some vague sense kinda thing. Despite the fact that they don't talk in the sense of words, they have very specific conversation (especially him and Hopper in the wolf dream). So will they actually talk at some point? That's gonna probably be the toughest one. Otherwise, now that they have the channeling effects pretty much down, the rest should be pretty straight forward. Wolves Yeah, them talking to Perrin will be a tricky needle to thread. It could end up giving the series some levity, although it could be of the unintentional variety… Tel’aran’rhiodColour filters, for sure. Echoing sounds and voices seem likely.
There’ll possibly be other visual effects like shifting surfaces and structures. For the wolves. Disembodied voices like ''Look Who's Talking'' will be corny and memed for years, or having the wolves flat out talk like this would be plain unacceptable...

Need brain bleach after that video…
Yeah, either of those would be the wrong move.
Which leaves…an ancient Roman trying to talk to a modern Italian kind of situation; meaning they sort of understand each other but only just. Or, they run with a Star Wars type deal; the wolves ‘speak’ with growls, gruffs and howls, but Perrin understands them in his own language. Similar to how Han spoke to Chewbacca.
Of those two, I think I prefer the latter, but not by much.
One other option is a kind of visual telepathy. The wolves send ‘images’ to Perrin, rather than words or sounds. But again, tricky.

The best I can think of is… The wolves actually communicate through images (and scent) in the books, so a series of rapid images to convey ideas? A bit like the the Prothean visions in Mass Effect, but more easily interpreted. As people have said, it will be difficult to implement two way communication without being unintentionally comedic.
As fo Tel’aran’rhiod: colour filters and slightly distorted sounds for sure. Some Escher inspired landscapes would be cool, for the Aelfinn and Eelfinn too.

talking about Wolves..... Shadowhunters is a good series. The movie was horrible; the tv series Cast was much better suited. The movie version actors didn't fit the characters. But Shadowhunters is a really good series.
I'm also waiting for more Shadow & Bone. Right now though I'm working my way through Falcon & Winter Soldier....but confused about how the Capt. America super soldier serum got into so many people when it was supposed to be a one-off.... a one in a quadrillion fluke. Suddenly now though, there's others.....even some ol' dude who fought during the Korean War. Bucky knew about him, but Steve didn't.
This MCU is getting really complex. I'll stick to STAR WARS, LOL. Is WoT really that good? I need something else to watch. When I first watched it I could barely get through the Pilot episode and the monster fight at the end was what killed it for me. Does it get better? Is there any better context and set-up or do you still feel like you're reading from the middle of the 4th book with no previous knowledge...?

The Wheel of Time is a bit of a mixed bag:
As a book reader I thought the series had some good parts, but overall was frustrated by inconsistencies and contradictions in lore and world building, felt many of the main characters and plot developments were underdeveloped whilst new inserts were given too much focus and just didn’t feel the show came together well.
My brother, who read the first book years ago simply gave up half way through the series.
My sister and her partner, neither of who have read the books, really loved the series.
By all means give the show a second go. I hated E1 on my first viewing, but got on better on a second viewing. I think by the end of the fourth episode you’ll have a pretty good idea what the show has to offer.

So my overall impression of season 1 was good. I knew going in that with only 8 episodes they were going to be doing some serious shaving of content and a bit of reimagining (though the latter far more than I expected). As someone who has read and listened to the book series probably no less than 30 times I did have to keep my expectations in check and constantly remind myself "tv-series" and tried to focus on how well they captured the characters. I thought Moiraine and Nynaeve were great...Lan, Rand, Loial, and Egwene were good/fine, and really kind of hated what they did to Mat and Perrin...especially Perrin who deviates the furthest from the book. I think it was the reinvented backstories to Mat and Perrin that sent the writers off the rails...and I didn't think it was at all necessary for the adaptation either. I also really liked Siuan Sanche and Logain Ablar.
In terms of overall story content there were some of the things that you never get to view firsthand in the books they fleshed out in the series that made it enjoyable. Logain's arc was quite good and a certain Maiden of the Spear giving birth on Dragonmount was quite intense. I liked the "dark one" interactions with two main characters at the end - talk about hitting where it hurts.
So despite some aspects I'm less than thrilled by I think they laid good groundwork for season 2. With it's apparent success I really wish they'd either make each episode longer or increase each season by a couple episodes...compare with Netflix's Witcher that has the same number of episodes which is telling a story from source material about a quarter the word count.
Anyway, if you haven't watched and are a fan of the books just try and stay open-minded and look at it as a reimagining and you'll probably enjoy it. I did watch each episode twice and found the second go more enjoyable.
Cheers and Happy New Year.

I read the books and quite enjoyed the show (though I have criticisms, as I think anyone would of an adaptation). I rewatched it with two non-readers, both of whom loved the season as a whole, though found episode 8 confusing. One of them is going to read the books now thanks to the show. I agree that you should give it another try. Rewatch episode 1, then give the next few a try. If you still don't like it, then maybe it isn't your thing. Disembodied voices like ''Look Who's Talking'' will be corny and memed for years, or having the wolves flat out talk like this would be plain unacceptable... That was supposed to be funny, right? Because it was ...compare with Netflix's Witcher that has the same number of episodes which is telling a story from source material about a quarter the word count. The source material Witcher ignored almost completely in season 2? But I agree with your larger point here. Netflix had much less material to adapt in 8 episodes that Rafe did for WoT, and it shows in how rushed WoT feels at times. I believe Rafe did ask for 10 episodes and Amazon said no. Since they are already filming season 2, I don't think they can change that now. Hopefully for season 3 and beyond, Amazon will wise up. If they don't want to do 10 episodes, then 8 with 2-hour season premieres and finales could work as well, though that's probably not any cheaper than 10 episodes. I don't know if Amazon's issue is entirely money or if the release schedule is part of the problem. I think it was the reinvented backstories to Mat and Perrin that sent the writers off the rails...and I didn't think it was at all necessary for the adaptation either. I agree with both of these. Having Perrin kill his wife is too heavy. I've seen this suggested before, but I think they should have taken that time to introduce Master Luhhan, then have Perrin injure (not kill) him during the fight. It would still give Perrin a reason to shy away from violence without traumatizing him to this level.
I have never been much of a Mat fan, but I am missing his jokiness in this version of the character. I think his loyalty to his friends and care for his sisters comes through just fine (barring changes made due to Harris's exit), but he's too dark for me, even before he picked up the knife.

I don't know if Amazon's issue is entirely money or if the release schedule is part of the problem. Yeah, I figured it would have to be season 3 because of the filming though typically a lot of content gets cut up during editing and maybe that has larger relevance. My concern with what was lost from book 1 and presumably book 2 as well is that there are a number of important people and events that need to be introduced and it's only going to cascade down the road. On the latter points I don't think Amazon has any issue with money and I loath the releasing of episodes weekly instead of dumping the whole series...I don't even understand the point of doing it that way given they don't have commercials...maybe it's the lack of overall content to their streaming service. Perrin's confrontation with Rand over Egwene is also just so out of character...also the sort of teeny tv drama I hate. You didn't like (book) Mat...sacrilege! I can honestly say that's a first for me. Who doesn't love a good natured scoundrel and gambler with an appreciation of women who gets his comeuppance at the hands of Tylin. Him and Nynaeve are my favorites.

Just watched Ep 8 and it was great ! Especially the scene with the previous dragon. Though i m a bit confused with the consequences of the dragon's choice either way There are again some magical reset of bad outcomes that felt shit but for the rest, everything felt good. Especially the channellers burning from that huge power display feels right. Egwene shielded and resurrecting the wise other felt shit though, but i get the point. (Btw, that s where GoT was so great, almost no heroes killing felt too great to handle) Also when the trollocs launch their attacks, it felt like it was going to be the season ending, letting us to wait for season 2... I really was expecting some sort of big delay or reset to postpone the resolution of the dragon vs "the big bad guy" conflict. Now that i think about it, i m pretty sure that s what happened in fact. But it felt like resolution, so great writing. all in all, a good closing work imo. Main flaws (imo) are coming from far earlier. Things could have been great with splitting all those events over 2-3 times more episodes (with proper world and char introductions), but at least we are not wasting too much time . As a non book reader, last episodes clicked far better than Ep.2 t0 5 or 6.
Is Rosamunde Pike kinda leaving the show ? felt like it And i still have big issues with Perin/Nynaeve/Lan acting.

Just watched Ep 8 and it was great ! Especially the scene with the previous dragon. Though i m a bit confused with the consequences of the dragon's choice either way I thought so too! With regards to the consequences; there are some book spoilers below. No way to know if they're spoilers for the show, because - so far - some of the details that readers had with respect to the Power are missing from the show. Read at your own risk! The choice that Lews Therin Telamon and Latra Posae Decume were discussing was whether or not to launch an attack on the Dark One, directly.
LTT wanted to, and wanted to take the strongest channelers, both male and female. The reason he wanted this was that the 'greatest works of the Power' were always achieved by the two sexes working together (linking, like the ladies did to protect Fal Dara from the Trollocs). Way more power, far more precise. Just better in every way.
LPD favoured another approach. Using two absurdly powerful sa'angreal (like the little statue Rand had in e8). One female, the other male.
They both had the same goal - seal the Dark One away. But the problem with LPD's plan was that the access keys for (I forget which) one of the sa'angreal had been lost behind enemy lines. And LPD refused to go to the fight without them.
She argued that without the added power the sa'angreal offered, the chance of success was too low and the opportunity for the Dark One to retaliate was too high. So she forbade all the most powerful women from going.
LTT went with the 99 other most powerful men (him being the most powerful) and attacked the Dark One, trying to seal him away. It worked...sort of. But because it wasn't 'perfect', the Dark One was able to lash out and taint the male half of the Source, which is why men who channel now go crazy.
The question - which is entirely rhetorical - is, was LPD right? The sa'angreal plan she favoured wasn't possible, so her options were do nothing, or follow LTT. If she'd followed him and the women had been present, then it's possible the Dark One would've been perfectly sealed away, and the utopia they'd built would go on. It's also possible that without the sa'angreal, that the Dark One would've been able to taint both sides of the Source, so everyone - male and female - who channeled would eventually go mad. Ultimately, she chose to do nothing, LTT and the Hundred Companions went to Shayol Ghul and won...just.
Then they went crazy, and 'Broke the World'. When LTT finally died, it was because of a moment of lucidity forced on him so that he could see what he had done. The grief he felt caused him to draw too much of the Power and he burned himself to a cinder (again, like the ladies protecting Fal Dara), but because of his insane strength, the effect was a massive bolt of energy that created the mountain of Dragonmount...which is the mountain seen in the opening of e8 where Rand was born. The final resting place of the Dragon, was the birthplace of the Dragon Reborn. dragontartare Hier0phant - does that about cover it? Or have I completely messed it up? I haven't re-read since A Gathering Storm...in 2009...

I haven't re-read since A Gathering Storm...in 2009... That's pretty much it except only one little detail that i forgot to elaborate on in my previous post about... the consequences of Latra's plan, and why it could have potentially been more devastating than both of Lew's plans. Mind you this knowledge comes from a Jordan interview during a 2003 Q&A, and has stated that Saidir would have been tainted alongside saidin if female channelers were present at the sealing... (Question #21) QUESTION Why saidin, why not saidar, was tainted? ROBERT JORDAN Because there were only men in the party that made up the party that made up the Strike at Shayol Ghul, that were setting the seals. In the act of setting the seals, there was a backblast that affected the people doing this. As I pointed out in something...I wrote a piece called The Strike at Shayol Ghul...there was a great division at the time—I don’t know if all of you have read it...or have none of you read it? QUESTION Yes, yes. ROBERT JORDAN Okay, then you know about the political struggles that were going on, and the different plans to try and end the War of the Shadow, and seal up the...and why various groups thought that one plan or the other was the best way to go. And in the end, what resulted was the so-called “Fatal Covenant” [It was actually the “Fateful Concord”], which had the female Aes Sedai swearing not to go along with Lews Therin’s plan, that they would not support it. The result of this was that Lews Therin carried out his plan with only male Aes Sedai, so there were only male Aes Sedai channeling there, which was a lucky thing, because if there’d been women as well, then both saidin and saidar would have been tainted. And his plan worked, except for that one side effect of the backblast which tainted saidin and caused him and the men there with him to go mad there and then, and other male Aes Sedai to go mad slowly as they touched the Source and began to absorb bits of the taint. But that’s why saidar was not tainted, because there were only men there channeling during this act of sealing up the Dark One’s prison. www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=183Jordan said that the Wheel isn't sentient but based on how the most optimal outcome was chosen over Latra's and Lew's original plans it seems like the Wheel is a divine supercomputer, loaded with anti-DO security software, whose main purpose is to ensure the continued existence of reality (The Pattern).

I had read the Strike at Shayol Ghul but we're going back a long, long way now. Didn't realise that he'd actually confirmed that saidar would've definitely been tainted as well.
But it makes sense. The world of tWoT is a shit fight at the best of times.

Lyrics to "The Man That Can't Forget"
The colors of his morning, the darkness of his night Little graves that gave no warning, a sun that brought no light He saw his whole world breaking, that tortured soul I met In a prison of his making, the man who can’t forget I can still hear the way that he cried for the ones he was missing I can still hear the way that he cried for the ones he had lost He saw them in the rivers, he felt them in the rain, in dreams he heard them whisper the truth that is his pain He caused the whole world’s breaking, that tortured soul I met
In a prison of his making, the man who can’t forget
***
The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins told Nerdist about creating this song for Thom. “We had started pulling lyrics from the books and then Dave Hill, the writer handling that block of episodes, actually started working on this idea of ‘What if you told a story about the last Dragon and the Breaking of the World and it’s very, very subtle?'” he said.
He continued, “I don’t think non-book fans will catch much of it, but I think you’ll get this idea that the world was broken. And that the idea of the world having been broken and the emotional toll on previous characters that we will later realize who is who and what is what with that. I think that that could be a scene that when played back when people know the full story of the show will have much further impact.”

Somewhat trashy Deadline article has a snippet that's pretty interesting. The showrunner knows he's not sticking to every detail. I appreciate this and wish I'd read it before watching. This is the exact kind of context I'd love to know going in.
He continued, “I think that’s the thing we do, above all else is respect the characters. I love these characters, even the bad guys. So every change that we make in the show, the thing we try never to change is these characters in the core of who they are and the actors captured that so perfectly. If that’s the thing that fans are really looking for, I think they will like this show. If they’re looking for us to stick to every single detail of the machinations of the plot or the places that they go or the people that they’ve talked to, they will more likely be disappointed. But if they’re looking for us to get these characters to screen, the heart of who they are alive, then I think we’re doing that.” *** Source, and here's the whole thing to save you a click... seriously, unless you like ads and popups I took this one for the team. There are a couple other interesting tidbits. EXCLUSIVE: The Wheel of Time boss Rafe Judkins has revealed how the Amazon drama series will handle the recasting of core character Mat Cauthon from Barney Harris to Dónal Finn in Season 2. Deadline confirmed in September that Harris was departing after the first season of the series, which scored a Season 2 renewal ahead of its November 19 premiere.
Judkins, in the midst of shooting the new season, declined comment on the reason for the swap.
“It’s always hard but we’re really lucky that Barney is so great in the first season; I love him in the show,” Judkins told Deadline. “And Dónal Finn, who is playing Mat in Season 2, is amazing. I have seen him up on set doing his scenes now and they’re incredible and they fully capture the character. I think it’s a testament to this character and how great the character of Mat is that it really feels seamless between the two actors.”
Judkins took on the massive project because of his love of the Robert Jordan book series on which the show is based, which he read fervidly growing up. It’s that love of the world that drove him to stay as true to the original stories as possible while treating the characters with respect.
“The pressure is unbelievable from all sides at all times,” he said. “I feel the personal pressure because I love this series. I fought to get it made for TV and that fight was so hard. It’s a success we’re getting it made but now I face the additional pressure to do everyone proud. So many people love these books so much. And nobody is a tougher critic than my mom. I send the scripts to her to get an opinion and she always tells me the truth. ‘You screwed up on this and you gotta fix it.’ I tell her, ‘Ok, mom. I’m going to fix it.’ My mom should get a consulting fee.”
But if they’re looking for us to get these characters to screen, the heart of who they are alive, then I think we’re doing that.”
The Wheel of Time is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it. The series follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity. Mat Cauthon is one of the five from the Two Rivers who, along with lead Moiraine, are considered the main characters in the books. Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden and Daniel Henney also star in the ensemble.
Judkins understands fans were hoping Season 1 would focus more on the Dragon Reborn storyline, but he’s hoping fans will understand his plans to keep that a mystery. But he does promise the answer will be revealed before the end of the first season.
“One thing we’re trying to hide from the audience is who the Dragon Reborn is, it’s the mystery of the show as we start to unravel this story,” he said. “People who have read the books will know, of course. The first book is told from the Dragon Reborn’s perspective but the whole book series is an ensemble piece. One of the defining things about the book series is the different POV characters, [which we leaned into]. This show is the first fantasy series to have half of those POVs from women, so this is a really incredible ensemble piece in the way the book series does in its entirety.”
He added, “For me, I always have to approach it as if we’re going to get to tell the whole story that’s in the books. If we don’t approach it that way, then we’d set ourselves up to not stick the landing and these books have such a good ending. I really need to set us up to get there if we’re able to. That’s not up to me ultimately. If people watch it and Amazon wants to keep doing more, I’d love to continue to expand this world further.”
Judkins is also aware that fans of the book series are a bit disappointed that the Amazon series has probably halted plans for the story to be adapted for the big screen. But he believes the books will work better as a series, one he imagines could run for about eight seasons.
“I think that’s probably true. I think Wheel of Time lends itself better to a television series,” he said. “That’s why I think now is the right moment for it to finally exist because people who know that books know it’s just a story about the characters and the journeys each of them is on. The amount you’d have to compress it to turn it into a series of movies is too much. It would take away the heart of what’s good about it.”
But... I'm not sure the writer/interviewer was paying much attention so much as cashing a cheque from the WoT marketing team.

The showrunner knows he's not sticking to every detail.
Isn't this a given though? I mean, I am not on board with every change they made (far from it in fact) but I never assumed the showrunners didn't carefully study the source material and made very deliberate choices on what to change and what to keep the same.
I mean, I may be a fan of the books and have read them once or twice but they made it their fricking day job for years of their lives to adapt them. I do assume they know them at elast as well as I do. They may have a different interpretation than me and they may have other concerns to think about than me (both in terms of what is importnatn in the story and also logistical stuff of making a show with a budget) but I never would assume they are simply ignorant of the original content.
If they really were, I'd be truly shocked. Shocked I say!
Same goes for the other shows that came out lately, based on books that had major changes (like The Foundation and The Witcher).

I am still in the process of listening to all the audio books of the series. Currently at book 5: Fires of Heaven. First of all, I gotta say it again, Kate Reading and Michael Kramer are absolutely excellent narrators. Probably my favorites on Audible so far. They do a fantastic job of giving a calm reading (perfect for bed time) while still putting nuance and emotion in all the characters. They also clearly went through Jordan's pronunciation guide for all the names 'cause they get it right, as opposed to the tv show, which - probably deliberately - gets most of the names wrong (Tar Va LON still pisses me off ). Anyway, really good stuff. Frankly, I am a bit annoyed how much Audible tries to push the new version of EotW, read by Rosamund Pike on me in the adds. I mean, I am sure she's doing a good job as well but re-recording those books was completely unnecessary, given that we have the old version and it kinda seems like a cash grab. But that's not the point of this post. Yesterday night, while listening, I came across a scene I had not remembered from reading the books years ago but man, I really want to see this in the show now: When Rand reaches the Dragon Wall as he leads the Aiel out of the Waste, on the top of the mountains, he sees the remains of a pre-Breaking port city and the concrete and metal docks for the ships sticking out of the mountain. How cool is that? Almost gives me Horizon: Zero Dawn vibes. During my first reading of the books, i never appreciated how much this fantasy world really is a post-apocalyptic one of a scifi civilization. I love that and I have to give kudos to the show for really hammering that theme home in their little intro scene of the last episode. Anyway, I really hope they do something cool with the little detail, provided the show ever gets that far. That's all.

Question for the book readers... Were there any Red Ajah that were actually good mentioned by name? The only one i can think of atm is Silviana who's not good or evil. She has a neutral /fair justice type of outlook, and she stopped Elaida from torturing Egwene to death but was jailed for it.

Still on with the audio books. Man, if the tv show gets that far, i am really curious how they'll handle some stuff. I just finished Lord of Chaos and boy oh boy, you can certainly do some horrific stuff there if you want to. Rand being held in that box for like a month while captured by Elaida's Aes Sedai and just being let out twice a day to be tortured by these women (one of whom actually wants to torture him to death for killing one of her warders) ... I mean, if they have the guts, that can get really nasty in the shw. I hope they do it because it will make the conclusion at Dumai's Wells all the more epic. I hope they don't screw with that plot line too much because it's brilliant as is in the books IMO.
