Forgive me if this is a stupid question but I'm not hip to the hip hop and I do stop sometimes so bear with me.
When they say "co-operative multiplayer shared world experience buzzword buzzword buzzword" does anyone know... our character, do we create a Freelancer of our own design with whatever backstory we imagine and join missions with others who have done so? Or are we the chosen one and we're joining with up to four other people who are playing their chosen one through the exact same story?
Like, is our character more similar to an MMO avatar or is it more like 4 Shepards coming together in some horrible reality collision? Am I even making sense?

Based on what BioWare has stated about the game, I do believe there will be a personal story that can be played solo. I don't know if that means we'll be like Shepard (he's the most Mary Sue character out of all BioWare protagonists), but it's safe to say our character will be integral to the plot. We don't know how that will be impacted when other players join your party, but I'm under the impression they'll probably just tag along. It's similar to how someone can see another player's class story in SWTOR by just being a spectator. Those are my thoughts, as I'm not convinced this is an MMO and we are just going to have a blank slate avatar with no background or identity. We already know our character is fully-voiced.

Yeah, that's what seems weird to me. MUH IMMERSIONS, y'know. Like, who the hell am I teaming up with? Alternate reality versions of myself? Weird.

I imagine in any sort of story BioWare is going to write it from the perspective of a single person so that it can be played solo, since they've said the game will be solo player friendly.
However the video does mention that we're called freelancers, which sounds like a more generic term for the lot of us. That said we don't know if the story is going to make us out to be a chosen one or not.
Personally I'm hoping for something a bit more like the Bounty Hunter from SWtoR in that after the main 1-50 storyline you're not really a chosen one as much as you're just a famous top tier hunter.
World of Warcraft is trying a lot harder these days to make us feel like chosen ones and it just doesn't feel as epic as Blizzard clearly intended for it to be, even when they hand us well known lore weapons. It's more like "So I got Doomhammer? That's cool I guess, but so did literally every other Shaman in the game".
Although I do wonder how they're going to handle it over time if this game is intended to run for 10+ years. To go back to WoW as an example I've pointed out a few times on their forums that given how I've saved the world multiple times now, it would also feel a little weird if I was just another faceless adventurer even if it's weird that we all have the same set of powerful artifact weapons now.
Blizzard used to attribute major lore kills in raids to NPCs to let us remain nameless characters, but then the playerbase complained that we were getting 'kill stolen' because we were the ones to actually down those bosses in-game.

Yeah, that's what seems weird to me. MUH IMMERSIONS, y'know. Like, who the hell am I teaming up with? Alternate reality versions of myself? Weird. As Cyonan pointed out, we are Freelancers. I think there's an argument to be made that we are essentially the equivalent of Grey Wardens for Anthem. Freelancers appear to be the best of the best that go out into the wilderness to defend what's left of human civilization. This would lead me to believe that when friends tag along, they'll probably just be viewed as fellow Freelancers. This would mean that even if they are with us on our story missions, we will still be the focus and directly integral to shaping the plot. In a sense, you could argue that the other players in your party are filling the role of companions. Now, there's still a possibility that companions will be in the game. We'll just have to wait and see to learn more about that. I wouldn't be surprised if we might have the option of either bringing companions along, or just playing with friends instead to fill that role.

First, props for your avatar. Go Team Sex Bob-omb!
No one knows the answers to those questions. If the trailer is accurate, we can assume that the game is co-op and you can invite players into (this is important), your world/timeline. Your friends's actions will probably impact your world. Whether your friends have their own separate worlds remains to be seen, but given the way the game has been described, like you quote in the OP, it seems likely that the world is shared at least with your friends. So a highly sharded shared world, where only your friends share your shard.
Some possibilities:
If Anthem is like Destiny, you can (sort of) create your own character, but you're the chosen one. Every player is the same chosen one in effectively separate copies of the same timeline. Chance this is accurate? Pretty low, since this model doesn't work well with co-op exploration of the same world/timeline.
If Anthem has a traditional Bioware SP campaign, you can at least design the look of your character, if not your origin story, but you're still the chosen one. Chance this is accurate? Medium low, since again, that model doesn't work well with co-op exploration.
If Anthem is some kind of new hybrid, you may be able to design the look and origin story of your character and you are not the chosen one. That would seem to fit better with the connotation of Freelancer. Chance this is accurate? Medium high. It's basically taking traditional Bioware approach to the PC (customized look at least, maybe some customization of origin story) and fitting it into what we saw in the trailer, but significantly, departing from the traditional chosen one trope of Bioware games.

Well, is the Destiny situation so unlikely? If there's any SP story of any kind it will be our characters that get credited with these achievements in our respective worlds. In those worlds, our co-op partners are treated as "other freelancers" as far as our story is concerned. That seems the most likely scenario to me, it's basically how SWTOR handled it.

For me, and maybe it's just my hangups... it's like, if everyone plays (Insert Name Here) Jones and is going through the same story, and then you join up... I don't know, it's like if you could drop into multiplayer in Andromeda but stay as your Ryder, and everyone in your match is playing THEIR Ryder... I just don't know. Wait and see, I guess.

Well, I would not mind if the SP campaign is telling a bunch of stories that help understand the world, rather than an epic quest to save it and defeat the Evil Dude of Worldwide Fame. If that's the case, Freelancer Bob should have no problems finding out that Freelancer Meg also found out the hard way that Scary Creatures nested in the rocks over that ridge, and ran afoul of Alien Bandits.

One thing they could do is constantly refer to us as Freelancer rather than by a pre-defined last name, like how in Dragon Age Origins your always "the Warden". That might help to make it feel like each player isn't just a different version of the same character, even if they went through the same storyline.

Hm.... freelancer,.. freelancer...
Reminds me of that video game in early 2000 called Freelancer (a combat and trade sim). Basically you were on your own and Anthem's solo option seems to point in that direction. Playing that game (I still have it) it's always you against everybody and everything else.
So, yes, the protag is always the player.
