Just completed “The Beast of Winter”
Honestly, it was shorter than I expected.

Anyone tried that combination?

I’m starting a new character, thinking about trying an Inquisitor (Cipher-Paladin) Anyone tried that combination? When I played awhile ago I built a Cipher-Monk. It worked well because each of them helped build the other one's resources. (both gathered resources by doing damage) As for the two you mentioned in particular I'd suggest simply figuring out if there's any kind of synergy between them or if their roles are parallel. Essentially, I'd think about what I'd want this character to be good at, and figure out if this combination gives me anything that I wouldn't get by using only one of them or another combo. The main advantage of multi-class in my opinion is that you can make up for the shortcomings of one class by adding another. One example is class resources, some classes start the fight with a bunch and then spend them, others build them as the fight goes on. When it comes to longer fights (which are admittedly only a minority of the fights in the game) classes that build resources over time like Cipher, Monk, Chanter, etc. are able to keep using their abilities even after the Wizard, Druid, Priest, etc. ran out of theirs. When it comes to the current meta / balance in the game I'm really not sure, I stopped playing awhile ago and decided to give them time to fix some bugs. I intend to give it another go after all DLC are released or perhaps even before. Well, my main interest is that my last Cipher melee builds leave a bit to be desired in terms of survivability. Paladins have passives that will help with that and auras that make their presence on the front line more beneficial to the rest of the party. That’s the theory anyway. I’m returning to the game for the first time in months myself. Beast of Winter was alright, if a bit short. It seems like a lot of bugs have been fixed.

Well, my main interest is that my last Cipher melee builds leave a bit to be desired in terms of survivability. Paladins have passives that will help with that and auras that make their presence on the front line more beneficial to the rest of the party. Yeah that makes sense I suppose. Though, perhaps a fighter might be better in terms of damage and sheer survivability (I haven't checked), if you are willing to leave the buffing of the party to NPC's. Doing higher damage probably means higher Cipher resource gain as well, which means more utility etc. Basically, every enemy you can mind-control is one enemy that's not doing damage to you and keeps the others busy, so there's different ways to look at survivability I suppose. True. I’ve actually been told Bleak Walker/Soul Blade is a very high damage combo for the Inquisitor (Though for role play reasons I can’t see myself doing a Bleak Walker). Kind Wayfarers heal nearby allies when using their Paladin burn attack, so that’s neat. I also like having access to heals and buffs. The combo does a bit of everything and runs the risk of becoming a “master of none” but I’m gonna have a shot at experimenting with it.

I am using the walk mode all the time as many of the maps are too pretty to rush through them. Also it feels more appropriate to have my group walk and not bolt around all the time.
Anyone else use the walk mode a lot/most of the time?

Nope. I have the group run about all the time. Top down doesn't contain enough details / immersion for me to want to stop and admire the environment. It's different with DAI; I will stop and examine the surroundings, look at the horizon, etc because it's up close.

A little update on my Inquisitor (Cipher+Paladin)
So far it’s going pretty well.
Flames of Devotion (Kind Wayfarer) heals twice if dual wielding, so that’s an unexpected bonus. I find it lets me play aggressively to quickly build up Focus, which I can then unleash with Soul Blade for a fair amount of DPS. I’m still working out which other Cipher abilities to best exploit this.

Well....it seems isometric games aren't a lost cause for me as it appeared. Now that the sequel has come out, I restarted Pillars of Eternity, which I had never finished because I was frustrated by some of the fighting, and find it much to my liking again. I've already found a lot of stuff I had passed by in my attempt three years ago, and the fighting is going more smoothly as well. It appears I just hadn't been in the mood for it back in 2015, in spite of having been a major backer.

Because there was much improvement with the patching of the first game.

One question for everyone here who's been a backer: is the Cloak of the Obsidian Order purely cosmetic? I rather like how it looks, but I rate functionality higher.

Well, according to the wiki sometimes a visitor will arrive to try and purchase their freedom. Beyond that, it seems like it’s primarily for role play value of being able to toss people in the dungeons.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what factions I should side with in Deadfire? I’ve so far been roleplaying a character without any particular attachment to any faction. I can’t see myself siding with Rauatai though, since they want me to assassinate the queen and that would definitely be out of character.
I’ve sided with the Huana before, which led to Maia leaving the party, which I don’t want to do since she was my character’s LI this playthrough. I can only assume siding with the Vailians would lead to the same result.
That would potentially leave me to side with the Princípí, but... well, I just don’t like them. Furrante is a slave trader and Aeldys is a bloodthirsty thug. Currently leaning toward going it alone.

I believe that depending on how you handle her personal quest, you can convince Maia to stay if you don't side with the RDC.
Alternatively, there is also the "go it alone" option. But I don't know how difficult that is or the consequences overall.

I finished the (first) game, finally.
When I couldn't get into it when it came out in 2015, I thought maybe I had backed the wrong game. I couldn't have been more wrong. This is an absolutely fantastic game. Gameplay-wise, lots of tactical possibilities I haven't even come close to learn in full in just one playthrough. Regarding lore and storytelling, I'm a demanding customer and this game delivered nicely. First-class storytelling with a fascinating theme, set in a well-developed world with immersive lore.
POE is also a huge game, particularly if you include the expansions. Being a completionist, I explored everything, found out afterwards I had gotten all the achievements except those of the kind "complete a game with condition X". Oddly enough, got "killed the adra and the sky dragon" even though I dealt with the adra dragon without killing it, exactly).
The companions were also well-written and voice-acted (where they were).
Gameplay-wise, you have a vast range of possibilities to develop and use your character's and NPCs' abilities, much more than in most other class-based games. There are no arbitrary restrictions like not being able to wield certain weapons or armor, and there are abilities and spells supporting various roles for each class. I also like the stamina/health system (I heard, to my regret, that they did away with that in Deadfire).
I played this game on Easy and I'll play another one again on Normal, but I won't touch the extra modes. Expert mode has one or two restrictions I don't like, soloing is unappealing since without party NPCs the game would turn into a slog (and I say that as someone who solo'd BG1 and BG2, I guess my tastes have changed), and I'm not looking for a particularly punishing experience either, so nothing harder than normal and no Trial of Iron.
I guess there are a few things about the game which aren't optimal, but there are only two things I really felt:
(1) Soulbound weapons. I have both expansions and the Deadfire pack installed and used almost all of them, but some of the conditions seem misplaced for a game of this type, calling for a type of farming (such as kill X enemies of type Y with type Z of hits) that doesn't exist in this game, and some of them you get late enough that it's hard (or even impossible) to get them upgraded.
(2) The level cap of 16 was completely unsatisfactory. I reached it before finishing White Marches part I, even before I started Crägholdt, with the content of the main game all done except for the Battle of Yenwood Field and of course the final location. Thus I installed a mod that set the cap to 20 and lets you continue to develop your abilities, which worked nicely since the last character in my party reached level 20 with killing the first shadow drake in Breith Eaman.
As for the story, as I said like the themes and the main premise very much, and - oddly enough for most I guess but it's familiar to me - Iovara's revelations didn't come as a surprise to me. At the final decision, I was sort of put out by the fact that you play into some god's hands regardless of what you do, but I thought Wael's suggestion and the "restore" choice in WM2 had the most potential to influence the world in a way I'd like to see, and so it turned out. Not all of my decisions made for happy ends - not for Sagani and not for Heritage Hill, for instance - but they were in-character and I wouldn't change them even in hindsight. Maybe that's one of the aspects of the game I like best: throughout all conversations and decisions, I always felt I could make meaningful choices that showcased what my player character was, and in the end I could own the consequences regardless of whether they were good or bad. That is, after all, what roleplaying should be about IMO.

Random thought: what region that we’ve heard about would you like to visit for a new game?
I kinda want to visit the White that Wends at some point.

All I want is for there to be a Pillars 3, I really don't mind where. But from the earlier leak of Steam sales we know Pillars 2 didn't sell anywhere near Pillars 1 (IIRC) so I'm a little worried.

But as far as areas that we've heard of, I'd like to see the Living Lands
