Heyas, firing this up. I've played a few hours here and there but I've never sunk my teeth into it. Giving it another shot now. Been on the backburner for ages. >.< Any tips, tricks, suggestions? How much impact does your starting continent have on mid-late game? (If any?) Any priorities that are just generally a good idea, Ie, specific research, engineering, munay$$$? Cheers.

The vanilla game is just a twenty hour tutorial for Long War anyway. (Jake Solomon said that, and I'd say he knows a little more about this than you do, pal, because he invented it! And then he perfected it so that no living man could ever best him on the field of honor!)
Continent choice does have some sort of effect, but not very large. Long War, while being much tougher, is actually much superior in almost every way. Especially if you're a turn-based-strat masochist. There, a well-chosen country choice (it's no longer continent bonus, but country bonus with that one's starter! ...on top of continent bonuses...) You can actually get EVERY SINGLE BONUS, too, as countries can be liberated (this is actually tied into the story itself, too, so at one point you have to liberate at least one country before you can proceed, while in vanilla, it merely advances the story).
Trust me. Get Long War. I can actually give you hints for that. Requires the DLCs, though.

I've never actually played long war myself. The original game was more then enough for me.
Overwatch can be your best friend in this game, but it slows the game way down. That said, meld is a great way to help speed up the progression. You want meld, because it lets you do very cool things (gene mods for example).
For tips, I'd say don't ever stop building satellites. But don't deploy them, to do anything but calm down panicking countries. Finally, I maintain that having the bonus to income (I think thats from north america, but I could be wrong) is amazing. Because you always find yourself running short on funds.
I think those were the only real issues I ever had with the game. Its a great ride, so enjoy!

North America has the "Air and Space" perk, the one that cuts down on satellite and interceptor cost. A very useful perk in its own right. I think Africa has "All In", the extra money.

I can't really tell - I believe Long War mod changed quite a lot of campaign gameplay. I ragequit the vanilla campaign after one day. And I can only say LW2 mod is totally worth it. But it gives you random continent. Anyway, I modded the campaign pacing to my liking. I can take all the time I want. XCOM vanilla has been trying too hard to push its idea of plot on the player when the gameplay was perfectly its own reward in the first place. I recommend LW2 mod.
Edit: Oops, the original one? Ye, just install LW1. Jesus, the vanilla campaign suckes balls. All it throws at you are Supermuton with cannons at you late game. Sectoids? You only see them early game.

Not to mention Long War sectoids are actually scary.

Be prepared for EXALT if you have Enemy Within installed. Those idiots are usually cannonfodder but also have the tendency to make you ragequit by RPG'ing your squad out of nowhere. It's the primary reason why I barely finish a campaign anymore.

I usually focus fire on the rocket troops. Its very rare that I can't bring them down, before they fire their first shot.
