I know 2H is the preferred DPS warrior spec, but I've always been much more a fan of sword and shield warriors in RPGs. Now, my Herald is shaping up to be relatively clueless (at first), and I see her being awkward in a leadership role for a good bit of the story. Head canon FTW! She'll be insecure in her right to lead, unsure of the whole Herald of Andraste thing, and not at all sure she's got what it takes.
That out of the way, I like to build as much for RP purposes as for game mechanics, but since this is my first playthrough as a warrior (didn't quite finish the game as a rogue) I'm kinda curious as to what people think.
First of all, none of the specializations really "fit" this character mold I have in my head. Templar is out, 'cause to hell with lyrium, Champion feels like a title she would be uncomfortable with, and Reaver is way too aggressive and bloodthirsty (thematically, at least). Since I'm leaning more towards DPS, with some tanking ability, since I plan to be the only warrior in the party, Reaver seems like the best fit...but I don't know how to blend that in with my RP ideals. Champion would suit her a little more, RP-wise, as maybe a step towards becoming more comfortable in being the leader of the Inquisition, but doesn't really have much to help in the DPS role.
Templar, skill wise, would be the best fit, but absolutely is out for RP and thematic reasons.
So what would you advise? Would being a DPS W&S Champion be anything more than a gimped warrior? Would it be feasible to have no specialization at all? Or is there a way to make a Reaver fit into the character mold I've got going?
Thanks for any tips/advice/criticisms in advance.

Sounds fun.
Some pointers but not criticism
When in game and acting clueless with dialogue companions often punish you for it with disapproval .goodnews is you have eliminated 1 decision. I personally love reaver s&is
I love sword and board especially with golden Nug. I go with shield bash, combat roll, charging bull and it this point (level 14) sprinkle in reaver. I don't use tactics so that can help your roleplay

I've just made it to Skyhold on this character, and I've decided to go W&S Reaver. The whole dragon's blood thing is appealing 'cause, to her, it'll give her the strength she thinks she lacks in and of herself. Champion is a title she doesn't feel she deserves, and she's seeing what being a Templar is about, with the Champions of the Just, and Cullen's example. So I managed to fit a spec into her RP anyways! Thanks

RP a Templar who refuses (broke the habit, like Cullen) to take lyrium. None of the abilities in the Templar specialization require taking lyrium.
Or you could just go Champion and only take the passives, none of the actives. Meaning, don't put the active abilities in your loadout.

Templars need lyrium for their abilities. Alistair also had to take them to use his templar abilities in the comics, your trainer also tells you that you need lyrium daily if you want to use the anti magic abilities.

Are we talking lore or gameplay? I meant in terms of gameplay, since we're talking about a build. If OP wants lore to trump gameplay, you're right.

The lore ruins Templar for me atleast. I just cannot bring myself to play it and even trying to pretend its not, dialogues from Cullen and Cassandra about it shatter that pretense. Hell Cassandra asks you to consider quitting being a Templar and stop using lyrium while you still can.
So way to hard to pretend not too. Besides if one wants the combo, use war horn with the new toggle for stun and a mage dispel on it, not perfect but you can still experience it. Better yet play a Reaver with explode on kill enchant, its hilarious.
