And the gears in The Descent! Don't forget Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hallashits! (Main quest line, spoiled by gatheringshits, instead of some interesting investigation!)

I don't mind the shards. I just collect them on the way... occasionally I have to backtrack, but it's rare. There's a couple that I mind because they're-stupid-out-of place. If I wanted to play a bloody platform game, I'd buy a bloody platform game!

The DAI collectible quest wasn't that bad however, it could have been much better. If you're going to do collectible quests tie them into engaging difficult encounters either via puzzles, platforming, or combat. If you add a bit of lore (nothing major, maybe a small side story) it really helps keep the incentive going. Basically try and make it as memorable as possible along the way. Rewards are nice but having to do a bunch of tedious stuff along the way deters completionist playthroughs.

The mosaics and bottles were way more interesting to me than the shards. The former two at least had story behind them.
I collected all the shards in my first playthrough because I'm a completionist, did it again in my second because I'm an idiot, and said "fuck that I'm using Cheat Engine" in my third playthrough because I wised up. XP

I hate the collection quests, all of them, but I can't help but complete them because I'm broken and can't leave stuff undone if I know how to complete it. I'm hoping the next game will have less of this collection *stuff*.

I hated the shards quest and never finished it. Outside Xbox is great, love their videos, they have exactly my kind of humour

I think I finished it once. Maybe. I genuinely can't remember.
I haven't been bothering with it at all in my recent go-around.

I resented the shard quest once I discovered how the oculara are made. So I then ignored them, only to discover it was recorded in the Keep as a major side quest. Went back and tediously collected all the shards, including being driven nearly insane by the one at the top of the rock outcrop in the dragon area of the Hinterlands. Only to find that the final door led to a rather tame battle with a pride demon, like I hadn't already fought umpteen versions of that already. What was the significance of that chamber? Search me, but I assume it must have something or why record it in the Keep? On subsequent runs I went back to ignoring them and then just manually changed the Keep entry to make it seem like I had done the quest.
Bottles of Thedas was much worse though. When I realised that the majority of times the yellow circle started flashing it was solely so I could find another bottle I said some very unpleasant things about the writers. Whilst I am not a recovering alcoholic did it ever occur to them that some of their players might be?
The mosaic pieces were more interesting, except I never did find them all. Unlike the shards and the bottles there was no assistance with locating them, so it seemed to me to be just pot luck if I did.

You know, I didn't mind Bottle Quest. Some of the descriptions were funny, and I generally never had to go out of my way to collect them. Whilst I am not a recovering alcoholic did it ever occur to them that some of their players might be? I don't think alcoholics are triggered into benders by the presence of fictional alcohol. And if they're somehow offended by having to collect bottles of undrinkable swill - seriously, read the descriptions - then you'd have to also eliminate taverns from the game. And if we can't have taverns in western fantasy, well, that's going to make life harder for a lot of Dungeon Masters.

Some quests are not meant to be individually pursued as a specific quest line. It's one of those things you pick up while you're in the area doing other business. This type of quest might last from the start to the very end of the game. Otherwise, I imagine it would drive you crazy. Granted, I just started Inquisition, so I have no way of knowing if I can actually complete this quest. However, when I saw the telescope skull, I thought it was rather cool. I tend to view these types of quests more as herbalism. Just keep gathering. It's not my favourite, but good to have for diversity.

I've only ever collected one shard IIRC. I never resented them because they're so easy to ignore. The mosaics annoy me more because they activate the ping and then if you pick them up they clutter up the wall, even if you never finish them.

I had one PT where I started collecting these, but I found they detracted from an otherwise very enjoyable experience. Now I largely ignore them. However, the bottles still annoy me because the ping picks them up and gets me excited for no reason.

Funny, the mosaics don't trigger the ping on my XBox One. The bottles do, though.

Come on, my comment was tongue in cheek. The problem with the bottles was that it was all very amusing the first time round but that was it. Yet every time I played those yellow circles would start to glow whenever a bottle was near and it was just annoying. First run I kept hoping that the yellow circles might mean something interesting (apart from when it was plot specific) but it was just another bottle. Then something that I would like to have had highlighted, the mosaic pieces, was something you just had to hope you would stumble across.

The only gather quests I like are the mosaics and the astrariums. I love the delicious little lore nuggets more than stat boosts.
I don't do the shards or the bottles of Thedas. I might have done the bottles of Thedas if they were displayed in a prominent place. Or we could drink them and get some kind of temp stat boost. Or we could throw a party once we collected all of them.

Agreed there should have been short little cut scenes made where you could choose a bottle and invite one of your companions to drink with you. Lost chance for some hilarity.

I collect them all. Always. I love Stat Boosts. I hate unfinished quests. My sentiments exactly. But some of them are utterly infuriating to reach; if I wanted to play a jumping game I’d play platformers.

(Platformers) Idk if you played Super Mario 64, but some of the Red Coins (you need to collect all 8 Red Coins in a level to get another Star) were put in the air and you only could get them while flying. I can't count the times THIS happened to me. Actually, looking at that gif, I think that's from one of the secret levels (the Fly level) I never finished that one, because it was so hard to get the coins.

I've done the shard quests multiple times. I like the stat boost *shrug* it's easier the more times you do it. I also remember doing the Mass effect.
As an aside I collected all the feathers in Assasins Creed just for the acheivment. I had no ide you could get a cape out of it as well hahahaha
