I remember your TW3 let's play. I'm looking forward to see how this one goes! Alas, I have mixed feelings about TW2. I think it's in part because it feels like it's trying too hard to be ASoIaF, in part because it has the series worst level design and least interesting combat, in part because the plot, while compelling at its core, is a convoluted mess and has atrocious pacing. It's probably my least favorite in the series, so yeah, I'm with those that liked the first one better. I will say in its favor, however, that it has the strongest character writing. Except for Geralt, he is at his worst here, probably because this story doesn't fit him at all — the series least political character at the center of a political conflict. Not a lot of gothic monster hunting or fairy tale parodies to go around. Hopefully you can get around to Hearts of Stone someday. Blood and Wine has its moments, but is largely skippable. HoS, on the other hand, is easily one of the best parts of the series. Babar Guy As for #TeamTriss, I also have a complicated view on that. You see, I feel Triss is the most wildly inconsistent character among the three games, being a completely different person in every game. In TW1 she is this notYennefer, or perhaps rather an odd portmanteau of every sorceress from the Witcher series, no doubt because, a small cameo aside, she is the only sorceress in that game. In TW3 she is, forgive me here, as generic and bland an RPG girlfriend as a man could ask for. But as I said, TW2 has strong characterization. She is at her best here, and I found myself liking her a fair bit. If CDPR had continued that way, I would maybe agree that she's a better choice than Yennefer. But as it stands, it appears as if they wanted to make up for Yennefer's callousness by making Triss as safe and traditional as possible. Boring!

I think the pacing is what bought down the TW2 plot a bit. However I still think it's interesting and deep enough to be engaging.

in part because the plot, while compelling at its core, is a convoluted mess I couldn't disagree more. Witcher 2 IMO has one of the best plots in any video game I have played. Finally a story in a game that does not boil down to "beat the bad guy". Is it convoluted? Yes of course, that's the beauty of it, there are so many layers to this plot. Is it a mess? I don't think so at all. In fact, I think CDPR did a masterful job keeping all those pieces aligned (the difficulty of which i can only imagine). Witcher 3's main plotline is fine and all but it has been rightly criticized, not to take up the threads of Witcher 2 very well. I get why they did it this way and IMO it doesn't hurt Witcher 3 that it took a step back (it was probably very necessary to achieve all the other things they did) but Witcher 2's brilliant plot of political intrigue and double plays for me will always remain a highlight within video games. This, I can somewhat agree with though. The pacing could have done better. They do try to cram too much into the final chapter IMO. The Enhanced Edition helped a little to expand on some things and to give some necessary explanations but still, the pacing could have been improved, that is true.

With TW2 plot being so good, I was very disappointed in TW3's plot to be honest.

It's the disconnected pieces. TW2's main conflict is a murder mystery of sorts, though it is not so much about who did it but why they did it. Then there is the political metaplot — which is not the main plot, mind you, just background stuff the main plot bumps into. But then, what you actually do is hunt monsters, as per usual, except the witchering episodes clash awkwardly with the politics and are not as compelling as similar activities in the other two games. So, you have a plot about catching a murderer, where you spent very little time actually investigating because you're busy monster hunting, where you don't actually get that much into the monster hunting because you are too busy getting fragments of half a dozen political subplots which Geralt has little agency or investment in because, after all, he is fairly apolitical. But that's the issue. Bad pacing is a form of bad storytelling. A poorly told story is not saved by its concept. I was bored more often playing TW2 than the other two games, hence my assessment. Now, TW3's main plot is even worse, to be fair. It's both conceptually dull and executed poorly. But there were enough well-told, compelling subplots to fan my interest. I feel inclined to think of TW as a concept as not well-suited to political stories. I will grant though, that I find ASoIaF and its hell-spawn tiresome and derivative, hence why I criticized TW2 for trying to hard to follow that particular trend. If you ask me, TW1 has the best main plot... and the weakest characters, something that I stress TW2 is infinitely better at.

So. Flotsam. I log back in and I'm at the docks. So I enter this dock building.get to see the river from the 3rd floor. Neat. it's like...open world is but not. Obviously. But also, Geralt does an amusing intentional side step when I clicked to descend the stairs from too far away.

You know what I love about Witcher? Mind control powers. We can only hope blood magic in DA4 would give us that chance.
