So here's a fun idea, boss battles can be fun. Sometimes they can be a nuisance, but other times they are a epitome of everything you've learned through the respective game so far, where you have to put it to the test. There are some bosses that stand out and leave a memorable mark on us. Be they epic through your mastery of the game's mechanics like in character action games ala DMC, be it the music, or maybe it's the thematic aspects. So which boss fights stands out to you?
Obviously this thread will contain spoilers so read at your own discretion.
--
Here are some of mine that I can currently recall
Ryuji Goda in Yakuza 2 -- I love everything from the setting, to the music, to the whole build up to the fight, and the snow
Persona 3 - Nyx -- Although I absolutely adore Persona 5 out of all the games in the series, the fight against Nyx stood out to me the most even to this day. I remember chatting with a friend when I was fighting her, and it was a tense fight. Coupled together with an awesome boss theme, and the bosses many phases, constantly switching out strength and weakness, while you had to adapt to it through reflect barrier items, buffs and strategy. Not to mention how it compliments the overall motif of the story so well
The Glorious Strategist - Jade Empire Without the doubt the best villain BioWare has conceived in my opinion, the whole set up throughout the game and then finally getting to the point where you get to best this old man was satisfying.
Frickin Thomas Mutton - The Puzzles was quite challenging
There was so much poignancy to this boss fight with regards to the theme of Father & Son that trascends through this series. I wrote a blog on it in tribute to the late John Cygan and his awesome performance as Solidus. Such a great fight.

The one that sticks out for me is Half-Life 2, which actually isn't really much of a "boss" fight. It's more you running through a final section of the game fighting a normal array of enemies while the boss himself taunts you.

I find that kind the worst type of boss there is to be honest... you can't even directly fight the main antagonist? That's just disappointing. As for me, this is still my favourite boss to this day

I find that kind the worst type of boss there is to be honest... you can't even directly fight the main antagonist? That's just disappointing. For me it depends on the boss. It wouldn't have made any sense to me to actually fight Dr. Breen since he's not a fighter, and most likely they would have done some transformation or "power suit" thing to make him a credible threat to the player which is something I typically don't like in stories. What worked for me was the dialogue from Breen in those final moments. He's somebody who would rather try and manipulate and is generally considered the guy who sold Earth and Humanity out to the Combine. Now he's desperately trying to convince you to stop and join him as you're tearing through the very forces that he turned over to because they were originally the winning side. and then in proper Half-Life fashion the G-man shows up to be creepy and mysterious when you're just about to die.

Does it have to be a "final boss"? 'Cause the music in the Brayko fight in Alpha Protocol makes that one pretty memorable That said, I always kinda liked the final battle in Deus Ex, Human Revolution. The music is awesome, and your basically fighting a whole room full of security systems.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Gregori the Dragon (though, he isn't the final exactly).
Pyre - The True Nightwings, Oralech. Because he tells you to GTFO, if you let him win.
Pillars of Eternity - Whatshisname. Because you can kill him first and ask questions later. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within - Dahaka. No matter what you do, he's always hard to kill.

Gehrman from Bloodborne. Even though there are other bosses in the game and its DLC that I like more than him, he's unquestionably my favorite final boss out of any game I've played.

Bohan the final boss of Heavenly Sword was probably the most aggravating boss I've ever faced. If I made one mistake he would beat me until I ran out of health and then I would have to start all over again . It was still a fun game though. I also really like the final boss fight of Asura's Wrath.

^yeah that game can go fuck itself. I read up on some of the artistic choices by the devs and Andy Serkis later, and yeah, good for them from that perspective. But from a gamer point of view? Everything about the antagonists in that game annoyed the crap out of me, and that final battle was bullshit. Now, for bosses that make you go 28 Days Later on everything in sight but you actually respect later if you "get it", look no further than Metal Gear Rising. I think the MGS series has always had fantastic antagonists in terms of characters, and quite a few creative ways to deal with them too. But in MGR, as with so many other things, that gets taken up to eleven. And it's one of the few cases I can personally attest to that yeah, you better know your shit gameplay wise if you hope to beat them, especially the final boss. The first time I played I mostly facerolled through everything, even as that got increasingly rougher. I legit spent half a day on the final boss and reached new levels of rage before finally (somehow) winning. The key to that game is the parry mechanic. It's poorly explained in game, but once you get it, everything changes. And yeah, the hamminess, the music, the ideology spouted and/or mocked, it's a perfect blend of awesome. But yeah, otherwise I would say it's a mix of factors that make "boss" encounters satisfying, even when it's not a "boss fight" per se (as in the Half-Life 2 example). Things like characters, relationships, motivations and context need to be well crafted so that it not only makes sense how and why it's happening, but it almost couldn't happen any other way.

In general, I am not a big fan of boss fights. E.g. I really liked the gameplay conclusion of Mass Effect 3 precisely because it did not have a boss but rather a fairly difficult ground battle. That said, of course, the Portal games had pretty cool boss "fights", especially Portal 2 with its fantastic conclusion. I also liked the final battle against Bob Page in the original Deus Ex because you had so many options. The reworked boss fights in Deus Ex: Human Revolution are very nice (while the original ones were of course horrible). I like it if I have options and can feel like I can outwit the bad guys rather than just pounding them into dust. EDIT: Oh, another one I liked was the final boss in Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast. He was a fairly difficult guy to beat in a straight up fight but if you got him to go under some gallery that was just held up by crumbling old columns, you could force-push the columns and crush the guy, instantly killing him.

Doesn't have to be a Final Boss in a traditional sense. In Ace Attorney it's a Final case, or a level in others, where you have to employ all the tools you've learned so far to win.

Perhaps not my favorite boss fight, because it destroyed my fingers, but the three-stage craziness that awaits at the end of Deadly Premonition will always stick with me. Even though the game is years old and there is a spoiler warning in the thread title, that's as far as I'm going.

Seeing the thread, no boss came readily to mind. So maybe I don't have a favorite? But let's go with the Rebel Flagship from FTL for now. To give it justice, one ought to have screenshots and explanations for each phase. Long story short, there are three phases. And things can go to hell in each one, though it more commonly does so in phase 2 or 3. Phase 3. I had other options, but triple Flak + triple Beam Drone was too temptingMuch earlier game, one of my very first wins. 3 x Burst Laser II, Small Bomb... and still nearly messed it up.

Anubis from Zone of the Enders. After you finally beat Zombie Neith, and watch a rather saddening cut scene with Viola falling into Jupiter in her Orbital Frame, you are quickly surprised by Anubis which is Jehuty's twin frame except completed. You aren't ready to face it, and you are unable to beat it. However in Anubis ZOE, you lose to it on the first encounter. Later on, when Jehuty is complete you face off against an easy fake before getting pulled into space by the real one, and just as you think you have beat it, you have to fight Aumaan Anubis as Naked Jehuty in Aumaan's core.

Have to echo Armstrong Platinum usually goes off the rails, but they outdid themselves there...Multi stage battle that goes along with rattling about politics, lame jokes, philosophy and some bizarre sexual innuendos. The whole thing was so gloriously fun and stupid.
