If anyone's still on the fence about signing on to All Access for Picard, the promo code "JANUARY" extends the free trial period to a full month, even for returning ex-subscribers. A paid month after that would take you up to the season finale, which I presume is the intent.
My understanding is that the code expires today.

I see the Midnight's Edge clown show is still insisting that the sky's going to fall. Real soon now. Just another episode or two. They promise.

I watched the first two eps of Picard so far and I quite like it. Enterprise and Discovery were not able to grab me. I've been watching Star Trek since the late 80s. Stared with the last few season of TNG, then DS9 and all of Voyager. What I could watch at least, we didn't have cable and outside CTV sometimes broadcasting the shows I had to catch American TV channels to do so as I live in Canada...and I pretty much learned English while watching those shows.
I had a friend in high school who was a huge fan of TOS, so I actually watched some of those as well, just not as much as DS9 and Voyager.
Picard is somewhat different, but it still feel like Trek to me, just civilian Trek (or ex-Starfleet Trek). I like it over the "reboot" movies.
I also prefer serialized to episodic TV which might be helping.

I see the Midnight's Edge clown show is still insisting that the sky's going to fall. Real soon now. Just another episode or two. They promise. I felt RedLetterMedia's criticism was a little overblown and disingenuous as well.
I can understand that hardcore fans might balk at the idea of the Federation taking a level in jerkass in Picard, but almost all of upper echelons of Starfleet throughout TNG/DS9/VOY were portrayed as either insane, evil or overzealous adherents to the Starfleet gospel, so having the Federation being run by these kinds of people is not exactly new.
I think part of the problem is that we rarely ever see Earth in Star Trek, since the show is all about exploring the final frontier. As a result, the conceit of future Earth and the heart of the Federation being a paradise is something that we rarely ever get to hold up to actual scrutiny. And those times that Earth is shown, we almost always see that it's far from the utopian setting that everyone in-universe purports it to be.
But that's not really a criticism of the show, insomuch that different writers have different ideas of what "utopia" is. For instance, the Ba'ku from Insurrection might have been Michael Piller's idea of a utopian society, but it would bore the ever-loving p*** out of me.

So I’ve been continuing my Voyager watch, I got through Year of Hell this week and I’ve been told the original concept was for that to be a whole season with the Voyager falling apart over time. And apparently producer Ronald Moore pointed to this episode as an example of what he would have liked more of Voyager to be like. Given his involvement with the Battlestar Galactica reboot, one of my favorite pieces of television, the origins of that series are making a lot more sense to me now.

Year in Hell as a season arc without a reset button would have been epic, just as season one of ENTerprise was supposed to be on earth, building the NX-01. Shame both ideas were prevented from happening. on a side note, love the various Rios Holograms on PICard

And those of you who told me Voyager improved from season 4 onwards were definitely right. The Doctor is definitely one of the best characters on the ship. Seasons 4 and 5 were pretty good. I am not a big fan of 6 and 7 though. Don't like where they went with the Borg and there is a few episodes in there that are just stupid.
What I liked about the earlier seasons (1-3) was that you got more of a feel of them really traveling through different areas of space (like how they encounter and also leave behind different factions like the Kazon sects, the Vidiians, etc. I also liked how Voyager was by far the most powerful ship in the area but its weakness was that it had no support and they had to wrestle with the implications of that. In the later seasons, they usually rather deal with overpowered enemies like the Borg, Species 8472 or the physically very powerful Hirogen (and many of the 1-episode aliens as well), which often makes the plot much more straight forward.
And I also liked some characters (especially Janeway) much better in the early seasons than the late one. But yea, it's all just a question of taste.

Piller's book about how that script came to be is very enjoyable. I actually prefer his original pitch with some of the first drafts. The final result is so far from what he initially envisioned, it's sad.

And now she's back on Picard. Looks like that commlink is going to be used fairly soon. Despite "Stardust City Rag" ending with Seven leaving, IMDB shows Ryan in the cast list for episodes 7-10. For someone I haven't seen in 16 years, she's looking damn good. (Ryan gets plenty of work, but I haven't actually seen any of it since she guested on Boston Legal.)

The final result is so far from what he initially envisioned, it's sad. Was the Ba’ku’s utopia less ridiculous? It wasn't that much of an utopia really. They were small, children like, didn't talk much (might have been only telepathy), but possessed abilities to create illusions. The bad guys were the Romulans with a Romulan-Klingon half-breed bad ass leading them (completely kicking Worf's butt in a 1vs1 honor duel). The planet had some sort of precious resource that both the Romulans and the Federation wanted to share while not disturbing the locals. But the Romulans, of course, played dirty and Picard&co went in a protect mode. But the Ba'ku turned out to be pretty tricky with their illusions and did a lot by themselves to kick Romulan ass. Piller wanted a comedy movie, so the first drafts were more focused on the Ba'ku being sort of kind tricksters.

So does anyone think we’ll ever get holodeck episodes in new Trek shows? I’m not sure if this is a popular opinion, but I sort of love how goofy they can be.

Star Trek Deep Space 9 may not be a favorite of mine but it may still be my favorite Trek.
Sisko started off as your typical Starfleet 'bigot' against the Ferengi and even Bajorans to a lesser extent. But when Quark pointed it out he didn't double down and turtledove up, he learned Ferengi customs and even moderated to a certain degree. He's always been one of the more tolerant SF Captains.

After watching the first episode of Picard, I can honestly say that whatever was left of the Star Trek I found truly good is now truly dead. The desiccated husk of Jean-Luc Picard doesn't make for the most compelling bit of TV.

I was excited about Picard because they were finally moving forward in the timeline after nearly 20 years of prequels and alternative timeline reboots but it just doesn't feel like Star Trek not to mention Patrick Stewart isn't getting any younger.

Well, I have finished Voyager by the way.
On the whole I found that I enjoyed the show a lot more than I did in the first few seasons. There was definitely a sweet spot in seasons 4 and 5 I think. I sort of liked the dynamic in the early seasons of Voyager being the most advanced ship around, but rigid adherence to the status quo was at its worst then. The last two seasons had their moments but also some weird choices. I always thought the idea of the Borg Queen was weird in First Contact and it isn’t better here.
Well, I’d say DS9 is still my favorite series, but I’m not sure what I’d pick for favorite crew. Picard is still my favorite captain.

I feel it reduces the otherworldliness of the Borg in general, especially since they always characterize her as having more of an individual personality and being more emotive than the rest of them. I’d prefer an uncompromising cold machine-like entity. We have plenty of other 100% organic aliens that can have this kind of dynamic. There are parts of DS9 that I definitely like, and Garak is probably one of my favorite characters in the franchise, but I found too often it could get really hokey, especially that whole Bajoran religion thing, and honestly the Bajorans themselves. I think Picard will forever be my favorite captain in the franchise. Given how it’s turned out thus far, I guess that’ll never change.

She apparently suffered a great deal with that outfit, and they even had oxygen tanks on set in case she passed out from the pain of the corset she was forced to wear under that suit. She remarked that she wished she was able to get the outfit after shooting so she could burn it.
