I'm referring to the Chargers. An interesting thing I noticed is that these guys, Bull's closest friends (family, really), are people who I believe would never have survived under the Qun (not with their minds intact, at least). We don't know the backstory of all of the Bull Chargers so I'm going by the ones whose backstory we do know. They are outcasts of their respective societies but for different reasons that might not have occurred under the Qun. As an example, Skinner became an outcast because she killed nobles who "tested" their new swords on the elves in her Alienage. In the Qun, that situation would likely not have occurred and if it did with her responding the same way, the Qun would likely consider it a case of self-defense. I believe we've heard somewhere in the previous games that women are allowed to defend themselves if the situation demands it and there's no one else to do it. As a second example, Krem became an outcast because he wanted to become a soldier which he was barred from becoming on account of his biological gender. Given his presumed proficiency as a warrior, he'd likely be assigned a combative role by the Qun and therefore considered a man. It even applies to Dalish who became an outcast because her clan had too many mages. The Qun hold a bigger number of mages and hold them in high regard for their "sacrifice" so she would not be ousted from the Qun. Don't mistake me, her life would suck.

Note that when he discusses his own past, he says that in his case the tamassrans made the right call. That's not quite the same thing as the tamassrans always making the right call. And how well do you think Dalish would have done under the Qun? Or Skinner? Well, Dalish gets screwed the same way any other mage would, sure. Skinner? I dunno. Under the Qun her life would have been so different -- maybe way better -- that I don't think we can draw any reliable conclusion about how she would have done. Maybe runs into a gender role issue, though.

Skinner would be okay - likely would have been given a job in the Ben'Hassrath as a spy or enforcer or undercover agent like Tallis or Gatt, so no gender role problems there.
Dalish if born under the Qun would be okay provided she towed the line about being collared and mouth sewn shut. If it was a case of the Qun invading an area with the Chargers in then Dalish would automatically be fed qamek because that is what they do to all mages not raised by them. The same would likely be true of a Qun raised mage who was perceived too great a risk to leave with their mind intact.

I get the feeling the chargers would not fall under the Qun because of their rather colorful nature as a whole, even if Bull vouched for them. The Qunari don't strike me as the type to use sell swords really.

I don't understand that article. When I think breaking canon, I think a change without a proper explanation, but they did explain the change in canon in a thorough manner, hence making it a revelation not breaking canon.
I'm open to correction.
