I have a day off, so I can't resist trying out a new (for me) game. First thing is that the graphics is their own. Character creation gives me very limited customization options for a very limited lead (Zachariah, the Mars Security Forces Cadet), but the result is rather striking imo: I did not expect that, because I expected Mass Effect, but I dig it. The intro tells of the rough life on Mars, and the art style and crisp delivery reminds of a factory with propaganda art on the walls, and sort of what I would describe as anti-utopian industrial social-realism of the 1930'ies inspired characters: The class and fighting styles - what I am seeing so far is very basic but hits the "cool" factor, with a Sith like character with an electric staff that extends to a double light-staff in combat on the Technomancer style; a rogue that shives, rolls and shoots from distance and a fairly boring (in comparison) shield and mace like tank. On the picture, he is fighting Sith-style. So, at least the set up of the game is pretty solid, the voice work is there, and the graphics/setting/combat is certainly interesting. So far so good.... gonna play some more, see if the story starts emerging.

When I mentioned propaganda art, that's what I've meant. Atmospheric & well-stylized: So, Zacharia went to fight sort of spider-monsters of Mars for a bit in the grand traditions of the fantasy genre, and made his way to his trials in... what? well, apparently a local library. Where he learned a terrible secret about what the Technomancers are! Shhh, don't tell anyone: Then, there was the first serious battle, that even on easy was holy cow absurd... Just look at the size of this thing! For comparison, Zach is that small sort of a figure near one of its front legs. Look closely, you can miss him! Starting with a bang, that's for sure. Luckily, after the creature almost got dead, Master finally came back from his walk about, and took all the credit by putting a final killing blow in while Zach was cutscene-disabled. But Zach got admitted to the Technomancer ranks as a full officer, buy drinking a cup full of... nope, not the drakspawn blood or serum as case may be on Mars, nope, just water. So, yeah, so far - still good off to do the first small side-quests.

As far as I can tell each corporation has own distinctive style - Abundance, as you said, got anti-utopian industrial social-realism of the 1930'ies, Aurora (its capital, Shadowlair) looks more like an old industrial town in the US, Alliance hasn't been shown yet.
About difficulty - AI stays the same, the two things that change are the damage, inflicted by enemies, and their disruption resistance.

Is this so you can feel out how Greedfall is going to be? Yes, very much so, I want to get an idea for the quality of setting, ideas, gameplay, artwork and voice by Spider. I also thought the game itself might be interesting, and so far I think it is, though it does feel like it is borrowing fairly heavily. But if the synthesis in the end is successful, I am okay with it. I also like how they rendered hair, LOL

So you have to play a man?
I saw this on it's Steam Description: Relationships with your companions open new pathways and quests
Like, Loyalty missions and friendship?

Yes, there are stat bonuses for completing companions' quests (thus gaining friendship). Edit. The avatar is always a man, with scars (plot-related), called Zachariah Mancer/Rogue (explained in-game, lore-related). The appearance is customizable, the name isn't (I guess, because of VA).

I really didn't like this game. I remember finding the combat clunky, the locations dark and drab, and while the story isn't terrible it isn't great either.
And basically I kept thinking "You know, I could be playing a Bioware game right now."

Combat is pretty slick so far, but I am low level. I did start rebinding things because having your ranged attack, say, on left Ctrl is downright idiotic. I don't get a feel yet for how many spell-like abilities my guy is gonna get vs consumables, so I did not start binding to 1-9, but overall I like the profile switching design, and a combo of a rogue and mancer feels like the coolest thing. I did like the style of artwork so far very much. I did not go much further yesterday, because I started following up the first sidequest, due to the Boss saying "do this before talking to Captain Elze" but I followed it too far and went into Slums area. After some brutal fighting I realized my mistake, stopped dying, ran away screaming like a little girl & went to talk to Cpt. Elze. Well, sh*t. Ctn. Elze gave me two rather grim sidequests, that left me shaken because of the confluence of the setting, and the name used for the guy I need to hunt down and bring back to the Regime (unintentionally, I believe, because it is a rather obscure reference to Russian literature and history), so I am going to write back when I actually have time to playthrough these quests & think & get my wits recovered from a surprise shock factor. But, yes, yes, Elze sends me into Slums but with two companions. Again, being shell shocked by Zach's role I did not even talk to the companions, just put Zach to bed to sleep on it and shut off the game. Later, good folks.

One strike against Technomancer is that it really likes to crush before even starting. No other game did it on me, though DA3 tend to crush once in a while-mid-session (reboots her machine)

I wonder if that's just your version, the pc version, both, none TW2, even after fixing my save problem, still crashes closed randomly. maybe it's a steam game thing. to interrupt the pirates.

Yeah, sorry, crashes, am tired. Apparently has something to do with FRAPS running. Today, that is, was fine yesterday. So, today's screenshots are brought to you through the magic of Steam F12 button. I breathed easier as I resolved my first sidequest. Zacharia was able to do what you normally do in the videogames. We beat up the deserters, one of them begged for mercy. Since one of Zach's new-found companions commented the moment we ventured into the deserter-hunting area that we should not kill Boris... we did not. I let him go. I imagine Captain will be pissed. Speaking of companions, the first two are Jeffrey and David, with Jeffrey being an excitable sycophant who loves his young Lieutenant Z, and David is a disappointed soldier who is tired of all the jazz. He swears. The companions can be talked about factions and characters of note at any time you want, they are voiced, and they fight Okay. Can't say they are in any way emotion inspiring type, though David is probably a bit livelier than Jeff. Also, heh, in relevance to that other discussion, here is the extent of nudity in the game so far (and the two companions in the background). So, we let Boris the Deserter go, and I started to investigate a side-quest I happened on, where I used Zach's developing Charm and his knowledge of Science to get cooperation of this damsel (who was impressed that Zach the Mancer reads scientific publications, lol): ...but then the message popped up that Zach is tired, time to go sleep. The time passage is waaay too fast in the game. Also, I am getting an impression that I need to walk around with pressing down the mini-map button to orient on the convoluted maps (they are not hard to get around, but very convoluted) but to do it while sprinting, I need to press three buttons simultaneously, because sprint is "hold down" only, not tap on/off. So for today, I am relieved that there might be an option to oppose the Regime in the game. well, fingers crossed!

What got me out of bed this morning was that I thought that the name of the Rogue faction in the Slums, the Vory is supposed to be Russian for the "Thieves". The way they pronounce it, I did not recognize the word. Overall, unlike the Assassin Creed 1, they did not do the subtle job of enhancing the style through adding accents or scenery background talks with words from (in AC's case, French) language they are trying to imitate. As a result, Abundance does a way better job of rendering a recognizable Moscow Metro/Socialist Classicism architecturally than in dialogue and characters.
Dialogue so far felt amateur overall, with copious overuse of ellipsis that I saw all the time (and pruned) in beginner mod writers. To add to it, they do not use space after punctuation signs on multiple occasions and that just looks plain unprofessional. The sentences are too long for a videogame or a play characters, leading to the VA's to drone on and on through them.
So, my wish list for Greedfall so far includes:
1. Easier "easy" setting for combat 2. Toggle on/off for Spring and Transparent Overlay Map (that will turn off automatically when you pull mobs). 3. Directional roll/dodge via double tap on AWSD 4. Keybind the same type of action on each class to the same button. Rogue and Soldier DODGE on a different bind, and do secondary attack on a different bind, it is bad, bad, bad. 5. Keybind defaults to things that make sense, for Pete's sake. Left Control should not be one of the principal combat binds. Giving QERT to out of combat actions when you have time to look down on the keyboard and not in danger is bad also. Those are the binds you can easily use, and should be among the principle combat actions binds.
off the soap box.

Spiders has good ideas but they feel half baked usually because of budgetry issues.
Technomancer has so many narrative and technical flaws it really holds back the game. I mean Andromeda for all of its playing safe with the narrative , it at least was coherent and had deep and endearing characters. The only person in game that felt deep to me in Technomancer was Scott.
Everyone else was flat.

Taking a bit more time to settle in the setting, so I did a lot of talking. I would comment on the post above that the setting so far appears to be more complicated and interesting to me personally than Andromeda's, and I do love Andromeda. I also liked quite a few side characters so far, Professor and Anton stood out, and the companions, well, they actually starting to become more distinctive as I chit-chat with them. Jeff's coming from a rural background & really does come across as naive, and Dave is from the Slums and had been hard-bitten by war. The shot is of the group in the central areas of Abundance (I just love the style of that place, can't help it, the artwork is wonderful). Zacharia reported to Elize, and got upbraided when he tried to be honest that some deserters escaped the net, so he lied and said Boris is dead. That reduced his Reputation with the Army (I think) and I suppose will come to bite him in the ass. Jeff has a fawning monologue on Elize, about how she is an officer that is born into the family of officers, heh. The boy is really very fond or envious of the elite. Figure 2. Talking to the Not So Dainty Dame, Elize Finally, yes, I totally dig Anton Rogue, the way he is voiced, and his dialogue. And it was incredibly satisfying to beat up the same group of Vory that killed the crap out of my character million times on the previous attempt, lol. That is exceptionally well done. Off to hunt down the opposition to the regime (loved the companion comments about how they must be stupid to always hang out by the front of the same bar, lol, good one, Spiders!) Figure 3. Zach is using his charm to disperse the worker in the Slums in hopes to reduce the # of victims in the impending terrorist act. And, not so great a shot of Anton Rogue, but you get the idea... I think. Dave, the War-Bitten Soldier has a fantastic monologue about Anton. I think I am really liking Dave. Figure 4. Anton is definetly not Reyes, lol.

The game's getting really good now. The quests are well presented and unusual. Here are some impressions: Zach impressed a dame by fighting like a madman to protect the official delegation that disembarked from an armored vehicle and came under attack from the assassins sent by a rival city. I guess, one of the officials brought along a daughter or an... ahem... secretary. She'd never met a "real Mancer" before, so wants to get to know Zach better. Laterz. Zach's hailed by a mysterious stranger on the street, who turns out to be a high-ranking and scary military Colonel very interested in what's going on in the ranks of the secretive Mancers. He alludes that Zach's roots are so very humble... he should cooperate. Zach does not mention it when he visits the Grand Hall of the Mancers (it is really, really grand, particularly the doors!) Finally, made me cringe a little, but anyway. Here is Technomancer's Anders, a lady called Bulgakov. You know what, if you gonna give it Russian flavor, call her properly, Bulgakova, not Bulgakov. Anyway, I was laughing my head off that I was given 24 hrs to kill the deserters, but intercepting the resistance movement with da bomb is done on Zach's own time. In Technomancer, you can stop the bombing. In fact, you cannot let Mrs. resistance to bomb, you can either arrest her, or let her go & take the bomb. I bet Captain Eliza would be pissed that Zach let Bulgakova go. well, we, the Mancers, are shady devils.

Technomancer is heavily russian? o-o Abundance has a few characters with Russian names, and one faction is using what could be a Russian word that makes sense for its name (Vory). All of the Russian names are mispronounced. This particular name is incorrect, and would be something that would happen in a second generation of further, because everyone in the same family here will have their last name spelled the same, no matter if a man or a woman, while in Russia, both the last and patronimic names will be spelled differently depending on the gender of the individual. For example, the two children of a man name Ivan Sidorov will be called in full Maria Ivano vna Sidorov a and Ivan Ivano vich Sidorov. That's the extent of "Russian" in Technmancer. Nobody has accents and there is no background Russian in the dialogues like in Assassin Creed when you hear french in Crusader-held city and the accents all over the place. As far as I can say, everyone but one trader were purely American. The merchant had an Italian name and a trace of an accent, but not strong.

My guess is they didn't call her "Bulgakova" so you wouldn't know ahead of time she was female.
FYI....Sumalee Montano (female American voice Inq) is Eliza and Fryda Wolff (femRyder) is Bulgakov(a)

The first thing I do after launching a game is checking the controls (graphics is the second). For The Technomancer, I'd suggest, to bind attack (dagger) to LMB, attack (gun) to RMB, dodge to Shift/Space, attack (dagger, secondary) to MMB, target lock to Tab, map (transparent) to Alt, sprint to Caps Lock, stances to V, B, N, interactions to E, Q (haven't seen more than two options to interact ever), sneak to Ctrl. About Bulgakov, good call.

In the setting, the last name refers to the profession. In Mars: War Logs (Aurora) the first name usually was a virtue, the last name was more casual (e.g. the first companion was called "Innocence Smith").

I am not sure what the social organization is in Abundance, if the children stay with the families or raised communal-style. In a side-quest, there is a "fiance" and they talk about a military family. Zachariah himself does not mention his family so far, he is just supposed to be a boy from the slums. Bulgakov's first name is Michail, so maybe Bulgakov is more of her "call", like you never find out Zenith' actual name in SWTOR, he is always just Zenith to you. Okay, I will go see if Zach can go demo the the leet gal there what the boys from the slums/real Mancers are made of.

Apparently, being an amazing assassin killer and shooting bio-electricity all over the place does not get a man laid in Technomancer. Instead, he found out that the girl is a former orphan and a popular singer from and for the masses, and the girl sent him to help another girl. he did, and still did not get any loving from anyone. The best he'd gotten so far was Niesha leaning close and whispering promises right into his ear. Among other sidequests that come in droves at Zachariah, the most poignant was saying farewell fro Sean Mancer, his old teacher. Sean was laving for the front, and he was both paternal and asked Zachariah to hold firm vs secret police as they would try to pry the Secret of the Mancers from him, as he is the youngets and the most vulnerable. Of course, as soon as Sean departed, Zach was accosted by Col. Victor. The game did not trust the player to do choices there, and Zach auto-reply polietly, yet firmly refused to cooperate. Finishing off some leads on murders & disappearances before heading out of the city to close off the pathways the assassins from Aurora used to infiltrate Abundance, and find out about the dig & relics for the Mancers. Figure 1. A stand Off with Victor Watcher. Tension!

Okay, am done for the day, still running seemingly unending side-quests, with the couple things of interest that happened in terms of the companions was that Jeff thinks we are being followed, and offered to use his skills as the country boy and a hunter to catch the observers. Dave had a good laugh when Zachariah spied on another Mancer meeting a crippled now-merchant but only caught hints that maybe something went wrong somewhere either with training or (more likely, cause cliche) in trying to maybe enhance Technomancer s' abilities or something like that. Dave was having his usual cynical comments about how he thought Mancers all tight and brotherly, but nah, just like everyone else.

I currently play Technomancer too. Now I am on Chapter 2. Have to admit that I buy this game because we have companion that be gay and Zac can romance him which MEA can not give to me.
. But when I play the game, they impress me with sci-fi/RPG element too. Difficult is too much in my taste. I have to play at Easy mode for the first time. I hope Greedfall will change this.
