It is funny how far the mighty have fallen, once they were at the top of their game, now they are a dried husk drained of all their nutrients, ready to be discarded as soon as Anthem fails on the pile of developer corpses that have been ruined by EA. While they were responsible for creating one of the best RPGs of all time, Baldur's Gate 2, a game that is still worth playing even today, looking back at some of their other fondly remembered works such as KOTOR or Dragon Age Origins I do have to wonder were they really that great or were they mostly given a pass due to the lack of competition?
It seems now days with Kickstarter and Steam greenlight and early access and how easy it is for new developers to get their products out into the market we are seeing the cRPG make a comeback, and with Titans like CDPR and the Witcher series leading the way we see just how far the old RPG peddlers like Bioware and Bethesda have fallen behind, Divinity Original Sin 2 while not perfect is still a fantastic game that many developers can learn a lot from, but there are quite a few RPGs on the steam marketplace that I have yet to even have a chance to try, are there any must play RPGs in your opinion and what would they be?
Doesn't have to be new stuff, can be old stuff, any RPG you think is worth playing for somebody who enjoys CRPGs?

The Witcher series is a titan? I thought the first one was awful, but each to their own. Bioware may have their flaws, but the Mass Effect trilogy and Dragon Age 2 are enough for them to rank among the top RPG developers as far as I'm concerned.
Ultima VII The Black Gate is my favourite RPG of all time. Still fun to play even 25 years later.

The Witcher series is a titan? I thought the first one was awful, but each to their own. Well it was the first ever game the studio had made, cut em a little slack mang! Besides not too bad for a first attempt, it was certainly a lot better than Dragon Age 2 and the amount of improvements between titles for CDPR is massive, the Witcher 2 was the best game released that year and the Witcher 3 only got bigger! Imagine what they have in store with Cyberpunk 2077!

The games I have discovered this year along with Andromeda, are Tyranny, Technomancer and Assassin Creed 1.
The last one is not really about role-playing a character per se, but it is an incredibly enticing dress-up, with a good atmosphere and interesting character portrails of the Assassin's victims. It's literally about going to exotic places, meeting interesting people and then killing them. I am planning to try more games in this franchise.
Tyranny is the best in terms of actual role-play. it's nearly perfect for my tastes, save for an undeveloped romance and isometric projection.
Technomancer reminds me DA2 very much, with a brilliant concept, plot and setting, very intuitive and enjoyable gameplay but an excessive reuse of the same areas and way too restricted protagonist. But it does have some customization for him, thanks goodness. However, the artwork is way more inspired than DA2. I am waiting on the next title from the same developer, Greedfall, and might try two more games they have previously released, though Technomancer by the sound of it was their best. Spiders, overall, is emerging as the developer for "my kind" of a player. That is, for me.
Witcher franchise does not offer what I seek in my games, and Cyberpunk is way too far off in the future to bother with as far as I am concerned.
so, take my opinions with a grain of salt.
Edit: actually, reading your post above, I suggest you stay away from the games I am talking about. Your tastes are 180 degrees from mine, so you'd probably not enjoy the games I do, and vice versa. But, yes, it is good to see the smaller studios and developers emerging that try to address different, smaller audiences. I keep my fingers crossed that that trend will continue.

Older games: Basically older Bioware titles, Baldur's Gate 1&2, KOTOR, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights (Shadows of Urentide and Hordes of the Underdark)
Planescape: Torment
Fallout 2 (haven't played the first one)
Icewind Dale 1 (I have not played 2 yet)
Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines
KOTOR 2
the original Deus Ex game (sometimes subtitled "The Conspiracy")
Keep in mind that as older games, hey may not run so well modern systems. Beamdog has creaded an "Enhanced Edition for BG1&2, the first Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment though.
Newer RPGs
The Shadowrun Returns series by Harebrained Schemes: Shadowrun Returns, Dragonfall, and Hong Kong. There's also a bunch of mods for these games including new stories.
Pillars of Eternity
Tyranny
Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2
The Banner Saga trilogy (currently the first two are out) by Stoic
The Age of Decadence by Iron Tower
Wasteland 2
Torment: Tides of Numenera
If you like more point & click-type games:
the more recent games by Telltale: Their Walking Dead series, A Wolf Among Us, Tales From the Borderlands, etc
Life is Strange by Dontnod
Games to look forward to in the near future:
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
Banner Saga 3
Kingmaker by Owlcat games
A Wolf Among us 2

I’m not sure there’s any “must play” RPGs. My maxim is that everything has flaws, no matter how good. It is only fair that you point them out as you recommend something, especially if that something has been overhyped. So, that disclaimer out of the way...
The Witcher series is definitely worth playing, even the first one, which I actually like better than the second entry. But each of the games has its own issues, from TW1’s lackluster characters to TW2’s bad level design, clunky combat, and meandering plot, to TW3’s generic premise and sheer bloat. It is amusing how this franchise gets a pass for things others would be crucified for. By that I mean that each game is more streamlined and, one might argue, less of an RPG and more of an Action Adventure title than the last.
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines: The Subtitling is somewhat of a cult classic. I enjoyed it even though I found it overrated. The first half or so is pretty good from a roleplaying standpoint; nothing beats sneaking into people’s houses and hacking their personal computers. The game even fools you into thinking you can play a non-combatant. Then the second half rolls around and it becomes and endless dungeon crawl where you battle the most fearsome of enemies: Bloodlines’ clunky combat system. As for the writing, there’s nothing to write home about. It’s very cartoony and cliche-ridden, but it carries you through.
Pillars of Eternity got a lot of praise back when it came out. It’s got gorgeous visuals and a pretty good combat system. It also has a lot of pointless bloat and lackluster writing. Worst of all, it’s got the least engaging plot I’ve ever seen. Even so, if you’re a min-maxer and enjoy traipsing around and reading endless amounts of “lore,” you’ll probably enjoy this one. I hear Tyranny is better in pretty much every way, but it will have to be a while before I give Obsidian another chance.
Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning is my favorite open world game after TW3. It has the best ARPG combat that I can recall and a colorful setting. The characters are one-note and the main plot is only passable (I found the ending particularly disappointing even though I wasn’t expecting much), but there are a lot of fun sidequests and you get to explore a wild fairy-tale world. The game’s biggest flaw is that it drags. The first region is by far the most enjoyable, and chances are you’ll be overleveled for most of the game.
Dues Ex: Human Revolution gets a namedrop only because of the versatility it gives you in solving quests. Stealth, hacking, diplomacy (which is a lot more intricate than in any other RPG I’ve played), and good ole shootouts are all options. You can even go non-lethal, if you wish, making it so that you never have to kill anyone outside of boss fights. If nothing else, I’d like more RPGs to borrow this game’s persuasion system and how it allows you not to be a psychopatic killer for a change.
Shadowrun: Dragonfall is the one I’m playing right now. It’s a doozy, with a beautiful arstyle, fun tactical turn-based combat, and a compelling noir cyber-fantasy story. The Kreuzbasar is probably my favorite main hub in RPGdom; it feels like home in a way few do. I wish there were more non-combat related activities and I think that, for a game without any voice acting, you don’t get enough dialogue choices that make a difference. But so far, great game.
There are also the RPGs I’m planning to play next and which sound good from what I’ve been able to gather. Planescape: Torment gets a lot of praise, and a game that’s primarily about dialogue rather than combat is bound to appeal to me. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the bee’s knees these days, so chances are I’ll give it a spin sooner rather than later. There aren’t a lot of historical RPGs out there, so I want to try out Expeditions: Viking as well. Recently I found out about Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, about which I made a thread a couple days back; with any luck it will be the Lovecraftian RPG we’ve all been waiting for. And as I said, I want to give Tyranny a chance eventually, maybe even play Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire after it comes out.

I am also planning on eventually trying out the DOS2 and PO2, though not the first entries in each of these series, as it sounds that the seconds are trying to address the issues I have with the firsts.

It's literally about going to exotic places, meeting interesting people and then killing them. I am planning to try more games in this franchise. Just to be clear you are talking about this game right? upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/Assassin%27s_Creed_cover.pngTo be honest the naming conventions of this generation's consoles and games is a little confusing, the latest Xbox is called the Xbox 1 despite being the 3rd generation of the Xbox brand and the 1st Xbox is just called the Xbox, similarly Doom 4 is just called Doom despite there already being a game in the series called Doom so do we call that Doom 1 and the last one Doom or do we just call them both Doom and confuse everyone in the conversation? I ask because there are so many Assassin's Creed games and all the buzzwords the use to name them kind of meld together after a while as the generic meaningless of the title could easily be used to describe any other game in the series, I was wondering if Assassin's Creed One was a different game in the series as the Assassin's Creed 1 I played was nothing like the game you described. The game I remember was quite shallow with no mission variety, there was no effort put into the tasks leading up to the assassination with all of them following the same bare bones templates of a mission and even the Assassinations themselves had little more to them than jumping out of the crowd to kill your target then doing a runner as the guards chase you. The characters you meet were pretty shallow with your first encounter with them showing them to be comically evil and displaying the worst traits of humanity (cruel, paranoid, cowardly, small penis ect) with them doing something comically evil for the sake of doing nothing more than showing how evil they are like punting a puppy off a cliff or something, then when they die they give this big spiel about how they were trying to create a better world which seems really disingenuous considering how no rational mind could even conceive that their actions would ever be conducive to creating that better world, it is as if the writers wanted the characters to be deeper than they were so they tried to make out that these were misguided people who did bad things out of a perceived greater good but could not figure out a way to make their actions make sense in a way that could in some twisted way be seen as noble but misguided and just said "ah fuck it, I am sure our audience it too stupid to question it". That said I don't know if that is the game you are describing but if it is the game you are describing and for some reason enjoy it then I am sure you will love the sequels as it only gets better from there! Well the writing is still shallow and the Templars vs Assassins plot continues to be pretty black and white resembling those old Mac vs PC ads back in the day with the Templars being evil ugly old men with hemorrhoids and weird sexual fetishes and the Assassin's all being the young handsome cool guys who fight for freedom and on the side of right!..... well apart from the fact that they are Assassins and solve all their problems with murder but still! However the gameplay is a lot better and there is more mission variety, of course there is a lot of random tat and pointless collectibles that always fill Ubisoft games but at least it is better than the first, I would suggest Black Flags or Brotherhood or 2 as good games in the series, probably best to stay away from the games Unity and beyond though. Been meaning to play Tyranny but haven't gotten around to it yet, does look pretty good from everything I have seen, not sure what build to start off with though? Ok coolies, so stay away from that game then? Ah yes I forgot that a lot of Bioware fans seem to have an irrational hatred of the Witcher series for some reason, I remember it was to the point where most refused to even try it. Aww why you say that mang? Is it cuz I mentioned the Witcher? Surely even if we disagree on one game we can find some sort of common ground?

What do you think the Witcher series gets a pass on that other games do not? I mean none of the Witcher games are perfect and there is always room for improvement, but the Witcher 2 and 3 are so great in other areas and do the things they do well so well that their problems are pretty easily ignored and don't detract from the experience too much. Besides if we use the Witcher 3 as an example while I do have issues with the game a lot of my issues are issues I have with the larger AAA space as a whole so does it really feel fair to single out the Witcher 3 in this regard?

No, because you specifically used words like "massive" and did not like the DA2. The way you describe the AC1 is also completely different from my perception of the same game.
There is nothing irrational about my dislike of the Witcher. I've looked into it when it was just released, I've looked into it again last year considering a purchase of W3, but I do not like the main character, the luck of customization and the player impute in him or chances to use one's imagination, the setting, the artwork and the massive world/length of the game.
So, you specifically value in the games that which is not important to me, or what I specifically do not like. As such, my recommendations are pointless.

Hmm is Dragonfall better than the base game? I remember playing a Shadowrun game when it first came out but it seemed pretty shallow, like a base campaign that was a placeholder and initial taste of a platform that would be used to sell DLC campaigns later down the line, for that reason I have been pretty hesitant on Dragonfall.

And do you honestly think you can determine what I value in a video game based on my posts? What do you think I value in games? If you are basing your assumptions on me liking the Witcher series what if I told you the Witcher series is the antithesis of what I consider a good RPG should be? Ok well that is not exactly true as there are values in the Witcher series that I do think are important in a good RPG, however I am not particularly fond of having such a rigidly defined main character and would like to see more variety in playstyles and gameplay that does not involve combat, in fact if you were to ask me what my ideal RPG would look like it would be somewhat closer to Arcanum and D:OS with elements of Fable, however even though the Witcher series is not the RPG series I would have made I can still recognize what it does well, and the 2nd and 3rd games are so good I can overlook my ideals of what an RPG should be and enjoy the games for what they are. Also what is your problem with the word "massive"? I am pretty sure I used that to describe the level of improvement between games and not the size and amount of content, of course big games with more content are always nice but unless that content is good and worth playing big by itself does not necessarily mean good, hence my disapproval of the Elder Scrolls and BGS Fallout games. I would much rather a smaller game that focuses on quality content than a big one that sacrifices quality for quantity.

Atmosphere and set-up of the game that is conductive to dreaming and creative co-impute by the player. Visual art that has je ne sais quoi stylistically to be, well, artistic, rather than mundane/ too realistic but not too childish cartoon-like. Strong mechanisms to express likes and dislikes of characters and events, and have predictable ways to influence them. Character that I can make awesome with CC and appealing to me personally. Manageable length/less areas/no OW. No overwhelming distractions of busy work like gathering, crafting, inventory management and gearing. Intuitive and uncomplicated, fast-paced and flashy combat that looks very, very cool. 2. No, I cannot determine, but from I have read you were saying about Witcher, DA2 and AC, you won't like Technomancer & most likely won't like Tyranny, though it is a safer bet for you with the Bastard Wound DLC.

I consider the original to be essentially a demo of what the game is capable of. Keep in mind also the game is extremely mod friendly and people create entire campaigns for these games

What is it about my tastes that would make me unable to appreciate Tyranny? Tyranny is short on each play-through and limited to small areas with somewhat abstracted ideas of "well, imagine it is a war". It relies a lot on the player building a lot of extra connections with the setting, and throwing their lot with this faction or that and imagining how it goes in their mind. To Obsidian's credit that manage to present the Factions in the "show" not "just read the codex!" way, but there is still a need for an emotional buy-in. It is not going to show you how you feel via precisely animated mini-movies. And, yep, you got it. I've disliked DA3, barely managed to get through it once and mostly because I was stubborn and loved Dorian, abandoned two other attempts in frustration, and finally uninstalled the game because I could not keep pushing myself to finish it. Overall, the only reason I have played DA franchise was because it was BioWARE's. I was Okay with but not really excited that much about DAO, and DA2 was an unexpected very pleasant surprise for me. From BiOWARE's games, I also did not like NWN1 & did not even finish it. My favorite games are SWTOR's 8 vanilla campaigns, Jade Empire, KOTOR2 and ME2 through MEA. DA2 and Tyranny come close.

*reads OP's reply to @carefull * Ooooooo. You're an assumptive jerk. *leaves the thread* Whaaaaaaaaat? I have not made any assumptions about anyone in this thread? In fact I am pretty sure Jade Dreamer has been the one making assumptions about me and the types of games I like, if you are going to be offended on anyone's behalf I would say I am the one you should be offended for! That said I am a big girl and my feelings aren't easily hurt, I am sure Jade meant nothing by it and merely made assumptions based on misconceptions about what she thinks I like. While I am sure you perform a valuable service to this forum by offering your offense where it is needed most I don't think it will be necessary as I am sure we are all adults and surely a discussion on the RPGs we enjoy has no cause for hostility?

Shadowrun, Dragon Rising, and Hong Kong are 3 great RPG's. KotOR 1 & 2 are amazing, 2 with the restored content mod. Fallout 3 and Ne Vegas are great games, Dragon Age Origins, Vampire the Masuerade Bloodlines is amazing, Lichdom Battle mage was fun (technically an RPG, but only technically). Starpoint Gemini Warlords is supposed to be fun, haven't played it myself yet, but its on my to play list. Mass Effect 1 is an rpg i'd recommend. 2&3 are decent, but I maintain 1 is the best. Assasins Creed 1 is a nice game to play. Not a real big fan of the rest of the series, but 1 was great. Bioshock infinite, wasn't bad. and far more deep then I first thought it was.

You needn't have equated all BioWare fans with myself. phoray and many more fans on this site quite enjoy the Witcher. I am more of an outlier than anything. And I do not consider my dislike of it irrational either.

Can we just get back to talking about what RPGs we consider to be great without judging or assuming or whatever? We do that enough in the Bioware threads

Why should I bother to take time out of my life to answer their question when I'm a Bioware Fan? Such an odd thing to find on a Bioware forum, that. I'm not interested in anyone's opinion being dismissed purely on assumptions. I wanted OP to know that I came here, read the OP, was considering an answer while reading replies. And then saw them being a rude ass. And left.

I'm not interested in anyone's opinion being dismissed purely on assumptions. I wanted OP to know that I came here, read the OP, was considering an answer while reading replies. And then saw them being a rude ass. And left. I don't entirely disagree, but the style was combatitive of the get go, so I expected the judgment. Irrational is not that bad vs what you'd normally would be called when voicing a dissenting opinion on Witcher, actually. But, yes, yes, the by extension clause should not have been used. I was cringing more over the long paragraph on AC and explaining how the later games will apparently be more to my liking if I indeed liked the AC1... while ironically being displeased at making assumptions. I did spare y'all a passionate speech on the merits of AC that I was at first compelled to make. Alas, I could not as judiciously decline the opening to speak on DA3 subject, as it was deliciously ironic, because the assumption the op I believe hoped to beget a "no, no, but, but..." has resulted in resounding: "yes, your guess is correct" In short we all do assume. And word overdramatically at times, particularly when it comes close to a subject of love of hate. The hotter it hits, the knee jerker the reaction. I shall go now do what I am procrastinating from doing though. OP, there are games mentioned in the thread that I am sure you will enjoy. But, perhaps, go easier on the intended dramatic impact in the post writing?
