There was an insane variety of mods for Origins. DA2 doesn't have quite as many but still more than Inquisition. Any thoughts on which ones enhance aesthetics and gameplay? Which ones work and which should be avoided?

There are still 36 pages of mods for DA2 at Nexusmods. What sorts of things are you interested in?

Let's see, I downloaded the mod that supposedly takes the game to HD. Also downloaded mods to fix look of Zev and Leliana. I see some mods supposedly allow you to dress your companions but worry that that will cause problems. Anything you would recommend?

I do have a mod to give Fenris a different outfit, and it works just fine, so I would imagine that the ones for other companions are also safe to try I also have a retexturing mod for Fenris (makes his skin less...pore-y, I suppose), a mod to make Orana look less freaky (her make-up, mainly), one to make Varania look more like Fenris, one to make Aveline's chin less pronounced, and a shiny hair mod for all characters. I've got a few mods to change Hawke's home outfit and MotA outfit. I also have a mod to shorten the potion and grenade cooldown times. If you're into the romances, there is a fairly new mod to add repeatable romance scenes for any LI with a locked-in relationship. I can search for links if you are interested in any of those.

I picked up the repeatable romances up from Nexus. (I assume that's the best place for DA mods.) And a couple of the appearance mods. I remember there was a mod out there that would let you change the armor on all your companions as opposed to the "only Hawke gets different armors" in the vanilla game. Just looking for recs for other mods to make the game interesting. (I played the vanilla game several times last year.)

Thanks AG! So you never tried any of the mods to allow you to change companion armor? Sadly, though, the more ambitious the mod, the more likely it is to break other things in the game.

<snip> Hope that helps. Thanks AG! So you never tried any of the mods to allow you to change companion armor? Sadly, though, the more ambitious the mod, the more likely it is to break other things in the game. Well the Fenris one gives him a nice new coat, but other than that no. Purely cosmetic.

I use one that allows me to have default Hawke appearance in the CC as editable. It also adds a bunch of other options but that's the main reason I use it. And also the main reason most of my Hawkes look the same.
Different outfit for Hawke at home (both f/m versions)
Fenris Files for the coat outfit, though I think I might disable it for my next game so Fenris has his spiky look back.
The open locks mod so I don't need a rogue to open stuff (very helpful on Sebastian's Act 2 quest if you aren't a rogue or forget to bring Varric).
I think that's all I use. I don't like mods that change companion looks (though outfits are fine). Most of the time when I see modded NPCs I have no idea who they're supposed to be. The class packs offer more than enough armor and weapon options so I don't need mods for that either.

I use all the same ones. I had forgotten to mention the editable default Hawkes in the CC, it's so handy to be able to tweak them just a little bit.

I've heard of a mod that hides the mages staves when not in battle, to make it more believable that Kirkwall citizens don't see all the apostates running around.

Okay okay okay. So, I've never used mods before, so this will probably be more painful than I wish it to be, but I'm determined. I like a lot of what the poster above me is doing, so I'm copying a bit, but I've got some I've found that I like. Speaking of Sebastian's hissy fit... Let him! Although, I wish some grand modder would just make him aggro and then we can kill him just like any other companion at the end game if we don't suit their allignment. And unless I'm wrong, I don't think any of those will contradict each other. I was on the fence about Big Bad Fenris, but I don't like that it got rid of his green eyes and longer hair, even if I liked the face shape. And then if I change him like that, he'd probably again not look like Varania. So! here is hoping I don't make a huge mess.

melbella I know you use Fenris Files so I'm hoping you can help me. So, I downloaded the blue jacket file. I then find that this file has 5 different zip files within it. I go ahead and unzip them all. But they definitely have different names. Now, am I supposed to pick a single folder, and drag that over to the override file? Or am I supposed to drag the images (erfs?) which is in one of the folders, minus their respective folder, over to the override file? I think the erfs are supposed to be sitting directly in the override file. So, I am doing that for his jacket and Alistair and Isabella's pants. Then the mod says I have to use the romance files if I intend to romance. is that supposed to be in a certain place as well? Or can the folder just sit where it is? Unrelated to Fenris, but what about these text (XML) files , CNVs, and GDAs? Are those also supposed to be directly in the Override folder, o rdo they stay in their own little folders?

The first zip files are for combinations of boots and gloves. You can see the version differences in the image tabs. Pick one combination and open that zip file. Then pick one feather combination (you can see how they look in the same image as the boot+glove combinations. Those tiny feathers on the brim of his jacket. When you open that file, there are three erfs. If you want his regular and romance armor to be the same, pick Full-time, other wise pick Pre-Romance (regular armor) or Post-Romance (Romance armor) and either find the other option as a different armor or let him stay in his regular armor. Either way, put the erf you picked into the override folder. For the romance tokens, pick ONE of the erfs from the folder and put them into the override folder.
Are the xml files called chargenmorphcfg or something else? If they are called chargenmorphcfg they go into the override folder, but there can be only one! So if you have two mods that come with different chargenmorphcfgs, you need to merge them. If you only have one, you don't need to worry about it.
Okay, the CNVs and GDAs go in the override folder. You should just let them stay inside the folder they came with and put the folder into the Override folder. You can do the same with most erf files. The game can read anything in the Override folder, so you can have all the files in their own folders, sorted by the mods they belong to.

phoray , Yes I believe you installed it right. I don't think the subfolder names inside of override matter, the game just looks for the .erf files and such. You can have them all in the main override folder together, or make a subfolder so you can remember what they are for, in case you want to change or remove them later. I just made a subfolder called "Fenris Armor" and put the jacket files and all of his armor mods in there. Works fine.

Curious Crow Sah291 Thanks! I'm starting to leave the new mods in their folders. This is exciting! New Anders Outfit
Handsome Awakening AndersRaggedy Anders was too much "Orphan Annie" with those freckles for me. So out with that, in with the new one which appears quite handsome and may just tempt me to romance him again. The new Anders Face Mod also had a cleaned up, but very much close to the original Fenris...and a tweak to Sebastian. Why should the Prince miss out on the fun? Also, since I'm going crazy with mods, I decided I didn't like Anders' clothes. I also decided I wanted more hair options! I'm a mage, gimme that inconvenient long hair! Custom HairThe mods that seem to be working just fine that I could test so far... I mean, some of these mods don't kick in till Act 2 and 3.
Hide weapons Antivan Classico: My sister and brother seemed to start the game with it, but I didn't get mine until Kirkwall. Save Generator: All I've confirmed is that Alistair is king. Which is right. haha. I don't know how to test this until I run into Alistair and Zev. 50 Shades of Anders-- Worked fine, just didn't end up liking the appearance once it was in motion. All chests Unlocked: My mage opened that chest like a champ. Magic Merril: all grown up- WHEW this upgrade just blew me out of the water. She's so tastefully mature and pretty now! No bloody teeth Brighter Eyes for Hawke- came with some neat hair presets! Natural Hair Unfortunately, I did not like my Hawke at all. Yes, she was a smoky skinned smexy model with vibrant green eyes...but she looked nothing like the rest of her family. And I want to look related, that was the whole point of the black hair. So, I shall start again.

CharGenMorph Compile And this was needed to clean up the mess I'd made of the xml files.
Oooo, I am so pleased with the long hair! "What trouble shall we get into next little brother?"Now I'm downloading the HD mod and messing with the lighting in my game. The only thing I'm not liking about the Classico mod is it seems to make Hawke's skin reflect light like metal.

phoray Better late than never! Here is what I have for Fenris files. I have the jacket outfit for him the whole game, then it switches to the romance version in Act 2, with red accents. It's not currently installed, though I might put it back after reconciling in Act 3. Fenris is so happy he goes shopping for a new outfit?
I was going to post some pics with him wearing it but Imgur decided now would be a good time to not work.

I was going to post some pics with him wearing it but Imgur decided now would be a good time to not work. Photobucket wasn't working for me earlier. either. Is that the purpose of the before and afters? Immersion/realism? I wish the green jacket were greener. Without max brightness, it just looks like a different shade of black to me. So, I'm going with the Full time Blue with boots and gauntlets, no feathers. But maybe I'll switch the file for a full time red come Act 3. The color of luuuuuurve. What happens to game saves that had some mods, then you switch em out and go with others? Does it break your game save or does your Hawke looks just go crazy? Hunky Sebastian Vael <- hubba hubba. Doesn't stop him from being a real butthead at the end game, but that! is a prince! Fix Distracting NPC

What happens to game saves that had some mods, then you switch em out and go with others? Does it break your game save or does your Hawke looks just go crazy? I don't use mods that change what the companions look like, so I don't know if the saves would be affected. A Hawke created with a mod that is later removed might not be playable though.
