I mean look at this roster:
RE VII, Observer...huge fan of horror games and these two are absolutely some of ( if not) the best of genre.
Nioh...Ninja Gaiden meets Souls series. Probably the best h&s mechanics out there.
BOTW...Nintendo's OW entry with some of best exploration mechanics and physics
Horizon: great gameplay, good story, extremely technically impressive
Lost Legacy...best Uncharted game
Prey...great "immersive sim", Talos station alone is Divinity Original Sin II... great crpg with some of best TB combat
And a ton of others: Hellblade, Injustice II, Persona, Yakuza, Cuphead, Nier, Wolfenstein, Gravity Rush...hell I even love AC Origins!
Don't remember any year being packed with this variety of HQ titles.

The only title that stood out for me this year is Hellblade Sinua's Sacrifice. Prey was decent, but mid game I was running out of every resource, and unable to find more resources. And that frustrated me, when I couldn't beat the hunter coming after me. So I stopped playing.
Its been pretty bland besides, imo. Am I the only one?

Don't remember any year being packed with this variety of HQ titles. Glad you had a great year. For me it started off with people ripping to shreds the game I liked, then having to endlessly hear that I cannot play HZD because it is not for the PC peasants; then the DLC was cancelled, and I found Prey to be a contender for the title of the most boring game ever with the most deceptive game's description/art. 2017 really drove it home for me just how much I dislike the open world games as I struggled with Prey and Inquisition, tried FO4, and experienced the jarring transition from AC1 to AC2 first-hand and read about AC:O. I have however enjoyed playing a couple games released before 2017, Tyranny and Technomancer & looking forward to 2018's release of Greedfall.

So many great big and small titles this year.
And 2017 it's still rolling out games.

Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Assassin's Creed: Origins and The Evil Within 2 were my highlights.
Although I'm a fan of RE, I thought RE7 was crap.

While it's def had it's ups and downs, can't argue that it's sure had a good variety of genre/games out there.
My only issue with this year has been the rise of loot boxes making there way into almost everything.

Nioh was pretty good, but there's a few little things keeping it from being truly great in my opinion. Cuphead's a fantastic game. Haven't played any of the other games you mentioned, either because I don't own the platform required or because the game didn't interest me.
There were some solid updates released this year as well, for games that were already out. Immediately coming to mind are Path of Exile's massive update, and Dark Souls 3's Ringed City DLC.

Not for me...
I played exactly two 2017 releases this year: MEA and Horizon. And did not like MEA.
For Horizon I had to borrow a friend's PS4. Easily the most fun game since Witcher 3. Would have played the new Uncharted game if I had my own console.
To me 2016 and 2017 have both been poor years for the type of RPG I like.
I however spent hundreds of hours playing Fallout NV and FO4. And currently having a blast playing ME3MP with friends once more. So I actually did more gaming than ever before.
But there are fewer games each year I'm interested in. I'm very selective since graduating from college. I had so much more time back then...

I played not one game of OP list. The only (tirple) 2017 release I played was MEA. I only catched up on past releases and bought stuff on sale (XCom2, Alien Isolation e.g.) Apart from Hellblade, nothing of the list interests me either, esp. not the Japanese stuff. Never found that appealing.

Only good game played this year is MEA(+MP).. lets see if AC:O or FC5 are added to that list. Basically a bit what Pounce de León said.. for me witcher 3 didnt make it to the list.

I bought a single new game this year: MEA. I was also a backer for Divinity Original Sin 2 and I got GW2 Path of Fire expansion. That is it. I liked both game, but found GW2 expansion a bit boring (mounts are cool though). I haven't really bought old stuff either, got plenty in my backlog already.
I have no interest in anything else that released this year or that will release (outside of maybe Deadfire beta if it comes). 2018 doesn't look any more interesting than 2017 was, although I believe I have more KS that should release in 2018 so there is that.
And this is coming from someone that usually bought ~5 new games per years (+ bundles/sales). Publishers don't make game I'm interested in and I don't play games just because they got a great score on metacritic.

Divinity Original Sin 2 was probably the most enjoyable game I played this year. Total War Warhammer 2 is decent, it does the job. With HZD I never even got to play it as it's not on PC, but looking at gameplay footage I never really got what the whole enthusiasm about. Kinda looks like a third-person farcry. I dunno, maybe Farcry wasn't released on console, yet? Though I think they got the other Ubistandard Open World map marker slalom games, like Assassin's creed. It also seems dinos are a thing in games, but I don't know why. Larger hitbox, I guess.

To me, 2017 did pretty well compared to (the rather horrible gaming year) 2016. However, compared to 2015 it doesn't even see daylight. Not to mention my favorite 3 years of gaming, which were 2010/11/12, so many great classic titles during that time. Compared to that, I am not sure I'll really remember any 2017 titles 5 years from now.
The games I've played this year were mostly indie games or older titles that I caught up on. The only new AAA title that was a must buy was Mass Effect: Andromeda and that was a disappointment to some extent (compared to it's predecessors, I am not one of the allout bashers). Currently I have a lot of fun with Elex and I am looking forward to Outcast: Second Contact at the end of the months but it would be a stretch to call those "great games".
There were certainly great games this year, that I didn't play (yet). Horizon surely is a great game but I don't have a PS4. AC:Origins seems like good entry into the AC franchise but my system won't manage it atm. Prey seems very cool but I didn't have time for it yet (maybe Christmas sale). But except for the PS4-exclusive Horizon, it's either franchise entries or niche games. IMO, 2017 didn't (and won't from the looks of it) produce anything that could really be called a classic. Nothing of the likes of a Mass Effect 2, Diablo 3, Dues Ex, Skyrim or Witcher 3.
So no, 2017 IMO will certainly not be known as anything more than an average gaming year, most certainly not the best of all time.

Meh, boring year for me.
•Andromeda disappointed •Destiny 2 proved my point and disappointments more than the first •Horizon zero dawn was alright but not great •Nier Automata is still unfinished •Ark is decent •Fortnite is probably the only game that I still play months after it's release for this year
Most of 2017 is me replaying things from years past and playing catchup since the year is that bad for me. I've even got back into pc gaming with the total war series.

Andromeda was a disappointment. Assassin's Creed is actually really good.

There is something 2017 will be remembered for, rise of the loot boxes. Though that indy triple a thing Senua's Sacrifice did (and did well), will be a stand out for some. More 'triple a' companies copyrighting, and actually implementing loot box systems in their games. Both single player, and multi-player.

This is a fallout from Overwatch's explosion I believe, even though those were only cosmetics, it gave a green light to greedy publishers to implement pay2win in paid games. As for this year, my GOTY is Divinity Original Sin 2. Mass Effect Andromeda ultimately was heartbreaking, I gave it a mediocre rating here, but with time it dropped for me. I would have gotten HZD, but I don't have a PS4.

Agree, very very good :
Persona 5 - above everything, fantastic writing, great story, amazing combat and very classic.
Nioh - very good game but i prefer Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1-2 over Nioh however mixing with tons of loot, stamina and hack'n slash it is really great. I am very impressed with this game. Defiant Honour DLC is on my backlog already unlocked.
Nier Automata - not played that much but looking very good.
Resident Evil VII Biohazard - nice atmoshpere, nice story and gameplay, very good graphics, Capcom is again good as was before. After normal, play on Madhouse because the game plays much different as on lower difficulties and it is much much more fun.
Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age - SquareEnix again surprised us with this great HD remaster, this is the pure example how a Remastered game should have done.
Shadow Tactics Blades of The Shogun - this is great strategy game with not so great console UI but i am really happy that this game is out on consoles. Hardest game overall this year.
Dark Souls III DLC The Ringed City - still in backlog but i need to train my rusted fingers for SL1. :-)
. . . . .
Greatest dissapointment of the decade for me is :
Mass Effect Andromeda. I am saying this after my 7th campaign playthrough, the more i played MEA less i liked it.
Pros : Only minor features :
Asari, Krogan, Salarian and Turians presented in Frostbite 3. Great planets. Cutomization ( Full-Auto, Bio-Converter, Kinetic Coil really fun ) Powers and profiles Many weapons Few characters and few Loyalty missions. Tempest Nomad ( but the wheels are flawed )
Cons : overall the game is very boring, the new races are meh and the story got too much of the fun and laugh and seriousness is nowhere.
