Torment: Tides of Numenera - was in fact a torment to play. Probably won't ever finish it though I'm at the last portion of the game, nothing is very memorable about it except for maybe Oom. Pillars of Eternity is shaping up to be so much better, though I'm tired of all the loading screens.
The Witcher 3 - Found it to be a good game but I don't see it as the game from the gaming gods.
Fallout: New Vegas - Probably because it crashes all the damn time.

Oblivion. Really bored me back when I played it. It's possible that my opinion would change if I tried it again, not sure. I liked Skyrim much more.
The Witcher 2 didn't do much for me. It was okay, just nothing that really struck me. (I much prefer BioWare style games.) That being said, apparently the third game is amazing.
I also remember downloading the demo for Uncharted 2 and it left me completely cold.

Those final fantasies, especially the one with the moody protagonist. FFX yes, it is slightly overrated, but FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, IX and XII is fine. The entire Final Fantasy series is highly overrated, the only one I genuinely enjoyed was IX. Moving from that, I find Assassin's Creed Origins to be highly overrated, the combat is clunkier than ever, and the introduction to the game is even worse killing any drive for me to even try to experience the story.

The Metal Gear Solid series? Don't get me wrong, I like it but some people act as if it's God's gift to humanity with incredible writing. I'll be honest, I found the writing to be atrocious at times Almost as if it was written by an edgy, 13 year old teen... Honorable mention would be Skyrim and Fallout as well Big Boss is definetly overrated

No one comes close to Bethesda ( studios) games in this. I get why they're popular ( no one really makes same type of game, so far), but their games are so below quality than other AAA studios, hell even compared to games I don't like. Poor optimization/performance, bugs, crashes, glitches and poor support. Trash gameplay across the board: melee, stealth or ranged and barely any effort put into balancing their systems. MMO quest design. Dumb worldbuilding. Narrative,Main and side stories, dialogue and characters: all of poor quality. Same for everything involving presentation: voice acting, facial animations ( or animations in general), sound design, etc. UI design, AI, bland art style and level design, no c&c or reactivity, etc, etc. They put quantity ahead of quality in every respect along with poor ( technical) execution. What stands out are Soule's OST's, really great main themes and very atmospheric. Morrowind is only great game they've made...it had all the same issues as their future games, but that world, art, myths and lore were phenomenal.

Witcher 3. I didn’t like Witcher 2 much, and with everyone going on and on about 3 I gave it a shot. After 10 hours I didn’t go back. The world still doesn’t grab be, and Geralt is soooo boring. Hate his character, I hate his voice and I hate his character design.
Breath of the Wild. I liked it. I put 205 hours into it. But it was a play through that lasted 9 months. I have done everything the game has to offer besides the recent DLC. And after that, I will never go back. The game is too sandbox for me. I need more compelling reasons to enjoy a Zelda game, like real dungeons and a story I don’t need to search for and experience through flash backs.
Red Dead Redemption. I’m not a big GTA fan, and all RDR felt like was GTA with cowboys.
Resident Evil 7. I wanted a third person survival horror. What they gave me was another FP horror game that’s basically no different than all the FP survival horror indie games that’s flooded the market.
Shovel Knight. I get why people love it, I just don’t think it’s all that great. Older gamers act all nostalgic over it, and some younger gamers like it because it’s retro. I’m somewhere in between both age groups and it just feels like a game I’ve played hundreds of times before.

Fire Emblem Awakening/Fates: Both games have awful to at best average stories (conquest/revelations) and the gameplay aside from conquest is just a chore. Awakening/birthright is full of route missions and Revelations has objectives/maps that are just awful. I certainly hope that FE Switch will have both story and gameplay improvements. The only saving grace of the current FE era is Conquest's gameplay but again it seems that in order to make the gameplay as good as they did they had to sacrifice the story. ive yet to play them. It seems all they have going for them is fan service

Too many to list, depends on my current mood most of the time since I played a lot of games.
If were talking recent games, to name a few we have The Last of Us, Horizon, Borderlands 2, Dark Souls, and the first Witcher.

Super Mario Bros. I understand it has a fair number of 'firsts', and the gameplay is pretty solid, but it's still regarded as THE best platformer by many.
I hate SMB 2, but SMB 3 is vastly superior in every way, 2D Sonic is vastly superior, let alone a lot of other platformers are better and, even more important: More fun...

also Witcher 3. GoG Galaxy says I played it 11 hours 32 minutes before I stopped, got so bored. This is not how the game should start. Not that I'm fan of Witcher series anyway but I wanted to see whats the hype. Result for me: DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE.
Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 fall in to this category too, and most of Nintendo games which American gaming sites hype all the time.

Maybe Far Cry 4. Not that the reviews were all making it out to be the OMG BEST GAME EVER, but I found it a letdown in a lot of ways. While FC3 at least acknowledged in various ways that the situation was crazy and that Jason Brody would have to be losing his mind to be acting the way he does, Ajay Ghale just randomly decides to get into the middle of a civil war and somehow becomes super-proficient with weapons. And pretty much no matter what you do, the ending amounts to "meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Plus, the random encounters pop up almost non-stop and just become a pain in the ass after a couple hours - I could hardly even drive from one location to another without running into eagle attacks or hostages that needed rescuing.

Even Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin is better. Bloodborne just lacks the content and creativity. PvP is very limited and not fun. PvE is great but again you got to farm many hours for cursed gems and on top of that you can do that only online. Offline players got to stick with the low grade garbage gems and only with regular weapons. The weapons in Bloodborne are minimal and again much less those are recommended to play with. And there is only one really good weapon in the game, and that is the Saw Cleaver and you can get it for free right after you start the game and go outside the clinic. How bad this is. The only thing i really like in Bloodborne is the Character Creator is very good and there are many options to create very attractive female characters. Also i like few dresses as well and few weapons but that's it, there is nothing special in this game. For me Bloodborne is 8 and not 10. Good game but not great. I'm of the opposite opinion, I think DS3 is overrated and that Bloodborne is at the top of the heap. You seem set on your opinion so I won't waste my breath on trying to convince you, but I will point out that farming for cursed gems is purely optional and there is no PvE content that requires it. The Cleaver is definitely the best weapon in the game, but to imply that nothing else is worth using is misguided at best. My gripes with Dark Souls 3 are that the first half of the game, from when you start to when you finish the Catacombs, is a complete snooze. There is not a single interesting area or boss until you get to Irithyll, in my opinion. And once you get to Irithyll and things actually start becoming fun, it leans far too heavily on nostalgia from previous games in order to truly stand out. Sure, there are some great bosses in there (Champion and Armour immediately come to mind), but creativity and innovation falls off a cliff. Weapon Arts are a huge missed opportunity when it comes to making the core gameplay more interesting, which is a shame since they've made great strides in improving the way your character controls. The buffs to rolls completely trivialize everything once you figure out just how strong they are. Ashes of Ariandel was a complete ripoff, $20 for one area and one good boss (Friede). Ringed City was really good though, it's right behind Old Hunters as one of my favorite Fromsoft DLCs.

State of Decay - Trash picking simulator w/ some zombies, time sink and nothing more. DA:O - I HATED the combat. Absolutely despised it. The story was great, but the combat was really bad. I doubt I will touch it again. Minecraft - I get how it's a neat sandbox, but.. cmon... grossly outdated in every way.. just lousy now.
Skyrim was exactly what I expected it to be - an enormous buggy mess - so I was not disappointed by it.

But don't you think it's overrated then if so many people think it's wonderful and one of the best games ever and it collected so many GOTY awards? And stellar metacritic scores even narrowly beating Witcher 3?

Skyrim When it comes to the whole "the greatest RPG evar!" statements. I say it's a good game (I have 500hrs on it goddammit) but a bad RPG. The game is so afraid of closing any doors to the player that basically nothing has consequences. One character can do pretty much everything. You can be the leader of every guild and the Thane of every hold. You can't fail missions and quest related NPCs are immortal. And while "Skyrim belongs to the Nords!" according to locals, nobody really cares if you're a dreaded Altmer. Other Khajiit are blocked out from towns but you? Whatever, come right in. There's no role to play at all. I remember back in Morrowind you had the freedom to be a dumbass and kill anyone. It just popped up a warning that you just killed an important NPC but it didn't prevent you from doing so. It also had guilds which had certain skill requirements and actual rivalries where joining one meant you couldn't join the other.

Not all of my picks are terribly original, but still:
The Witcher 3: I like it, think it's a great game, but the hype does often get out of hand, as it is bound to do. Praise of its "revolutionary" nature is particularly baffling. TW3 is one of the safest, most mainstream RPGs I've played. It just happens to be better executed than other similar games.
The Witcher 2: my least favorite in the franchise. I do get why so many people are into it. TW2 pretty much rode the Game of Thrones wave back when it was fresh and on the rise. The political metaplot is interesting to piece together and it has some of the best overall character writing in the franchise, but that does not make up for the bad gameplay, frustrating level design, and the blandness of the actual main plot.
Skyrim: I did not play this one for long. I guess all I have to say is that I don't care if I can do anything I want, if there is nothing interesting to do and no reason to do it. The term "sandbox" is quite appropriate.
Bloodlines: more of a cult classic than a popular game, but I have seen so many people praise this game to high heaven. I liked parts of it, but I found the writing basic and the second half of it absolutely tedious.
Pillars of Eternity: again, not a game I hate, but years after I first got I still haven't finished it. Once in a long while I pick it up and make a little progress before losing interest again. The best part of it is the visuals — that's some beautiful 2D art that I wish more games used. The second best part of it is the combat; it is clunky, there is too much of it, and most of it is bland, pointless fights against trash mobs, but I enjoy the underlying system and it really shines in the most difficult encounters. Everything else about the game oscillates between just okay and pretty bad. PoE has potential, though, and I have hopes for the sequel.
Baldur's Gate: I'm talking about the first one here, to be clear. It is honestly one of the worst games I've ever played, though the passage of time has done it no favors. The gameplay is nonsensical and dull, and it basically has an Excuse Story that only kind of gets rolling once you reach the big city towards the end. That is the best part of the game, but it's too little, too late. I pity poor sods in the 90s for whom it was this or the highway.

Very valid points, but I rarely hear the phrase "best RPG ever" in a Skyrim context. In my experience, almost always Witcher 3 is meant.

Especially when half of the "game of the year" awards are awarded before the game even releases and others are so cartoonishly overblown that it begs the question whether the people giving these awards actually play other games besides Skyrim (PCGamer ranking it the no. 1 PC game of all time lel). Metacritic scores count for even less than awards.

Jade Empire. The most culturally insensitive and tone deaf orientalist bullshit that I was still amazed that they're created by the exact same writers of Dragon Age and Mass Effect. But no... its a cult classic, its perfect, everyone loves it, it needed to be remastered and remake... okay... this is a long rant.. Was it really too much to do some basic research on East Asia culture? You could create diverse Thedas or diverse The Old Republic but the idea of a diverse East Asia is too much? Did anyone watch wuxia shows or read literature or learn basic history? Did nobody read Romance of the Third Kingdom and that there are multiple warring states before the formation unified China, Korea and Japan? Its also a fighting game based on ancient times... why was Bruce Lee's Wing Chun is in the game? Why not include the (overrated but old as dirt) Shao Lin styles? Why is there obviously bad guy Samurai and Ninja while still belonging in one geography? If there's Japanese influence, where's the Shogunate? Why make fake Asian language in a supposedly a homogenous society where everyone should speak the same language? Why everyone speak in strange sentence structure in Engrish and consistently drop their fake accent? Why majority of the NPCs all have the exact same epicanthal folds on their eyes.. as if there's no asians with double eyelids? Is everyone related? Why most peasant spoke like they're English-born royalty? Why is everyone so obsessed about spiritualism and mumbo jumbo... why no versions of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism... why there's no exploration of philosophy and social commentary.. instead of depending on stereotypical portrayals of Asians in Western media and overused hero's journey archetype.
Why nobody talk about how that "Jade Empire" name literally imply that its an empire filled with prostitutes. Its a French word that was a derogatory insult in English. I 'suppose' it means the milk green-ish stone, 玉 Yù, which literally just mean beautiful gem... its female ornament. Why do you think the English use that exact word for it in the first place?
Is there not even a single East Asian-descent writer in North America that they could use before they made an expensive game? Heck, I'll be happy if its just A Song of Ice and Fire series but set in Ancient China... which actually can be accurate for that setting.
"How dare you not get these cultural details right in your fantasy game!" Holy fucking shit Bioware "Fans" really are the absolute worst. They're certainly annoying.
