Sounds interesting. Question about the previous games in the series. I have Spellforce 2 and Spellforce 2 - Faith in Destiny on Steam. Which one I should play first (I don't remember much about them and the descriptions on the store pages don't help much)?

Sounds interesting. Question about the previous games in the series. I have Spellforce 2 and Spellforce 2 - Faith in Destiny on Steam. Which one I should play first (I don't remember much about them and the descriptions on the store pages don't help much)? Okay lets see. I'm going to give the chronological order in which the games take place. A ) Spellforce 3 (prequel) B ) Spellforce 1 order of dawn (basegame) + Breath of Winter (expansion) + Shadow of the Phoenix (final expansion and finishes the story from game 1) C ) Spellforce 2 Shadow Wars (basegame) + Dragon Storm (expansion) + Faith in Destiny (dlc/expansion) + Demons of the Past (final dlc/expansion) It is not mandatory to have played SP 1 or 2 to understand SP 3, they made really sure of that. Although plenty of references to 1 and 2 (for fans) since the series does rely on its story and gameplay IMO. But hey, I like both very much, so it is a win-win situation for me Personally (I try to be vague to not spoil the story ) I think playing 1, more than 2, gives you more possible investment into the story that Spellforce 3 is going to tell because of the appearance of a certain faction of characters that had a big impact on the Spellforce universe. Spellforce 1 has 2 co-protagonists. The one you play in the Order of Dawn and the second one you play in Breath of Winter. Both of them appear (you choose which one you control) in the last expansion of Shadow of the Phoenix and finish the story SP1 was going to tell. Spellforce 2 tackled it a different way with each game/expansion/dlc having a different protagonist. You do see the older protagonist appear in the game and are able to interact with them. Each game/expansion/dlc is revolved around a story that is solved in the game itself, with some background questions leading up to the next. Eh, kinda wrote more than what I had in mind to get to the point. However like I said they are really trying to reintroduce the series, since it almost died when Jowood (company and original owner) when bankrupt years back. That happened during the development of Faith in Destiny, and it really shows how terrible the situation was when you play the game, its horrible compared to the other ones. I played it once just to get the story and never touched it again. I think this answers your question, I hope so though. If you get more questions, feel free to ask.

So, are the chars voiced? I only saw part of the demo yesterday and heard "geralt" which you said is just the MC. It does look interesting. Since the sale ends a day after launch, I'll watch actual gameplay on Twitch and decide.

Can't think of any npc that wasn't voiced in the entire series that didn't have a good story/lore reason. Also animals, unless there is a particular reason for it, they can't talk. The Va of Geralt takes up the role of mentor for your avatar, maybe that makes it more clear. I'm just glad the VA found another job since being this Iconic might be a problem in disguise at some occasions.

I am not sure if they did themselves a favour by choosing Geralt's VA for the trailer. If you read the youtube comment section (yes, I sometimes have masochistic tendencies) you can find a lot of people liking/disliking the game just because of that, though it has nothing to do with the actual game. Not that people needed an incentive to compare any game to the witcher in the first place. VA issues aside I am really excited to see another spellforce game, but I guess I will wait and see how it turns out. With a different developer and a long time since the last game it might just be the same franchise but nothing like the predecessors, though there already was a huge difference between Spellforce 1 and 2, gameplay-wise and the overall feeling to it. Spellforce was what got me into playing RPGs and fantasy in general, before that I mostly played strategy and simulations. I played the first one a lot, but I don't really remember much of the story (Just lookerd it up, it's from 2003. Now I feel old ). The second game wasn't as well received, but I liked it nonetheless, never tried the expansions, though. My memory isn't much better concerning the any details but one piece of banter stuck in my head: (human male character to a traditionally skimpily clad dark elf lady in a snowy mountain region) "Aren't you feeling cold, Miss Dark Elf?" . This line still pops up in my head whenever I see bikini armour.

Yea I read a lot of those similar comments too when I viewed that trailer. It makes it for the VA that much harder to find work again because everyone links him to his role in the past as the Witcher. That way companies can be put off on the idea of hiring him because people just think of him as the character and nothing more. The character that are portrayed are 'larger' than the persona behind them. So in the end even though it might be bad 'influence', I'll support the (voice) actor because he's just as much affected by this. Only by expanding his roles will people see more of him than the portrayed character. Similar things happen with actors in movies or on TV. Glad you're excited and your concerns are understandable. On the other hand though, I'd rather have that one shot to breath new life into the series than it just being left somewhere to be forgotten and never reach daylight again. Which, I previously mentioned, was a real possibility given the situation. On a more nostalgic note, the devs recently rediscovered the 'source' code from Spellforce 1 that was lost when Jowood went bankrupt. So them mentioning this might reveal them having interest in a possible remake. Glad you weren't the only one feeling old, because that happened to me too . Similarly to your situation, this is what got me into the genre as well and that's why i still hold it so dear. That and because I loved the game itself, gameplay and story, and never found a really similar suitable replacement. Also was one of the first times I questioned the entire armor situation which is game vs logic. I learned to put it aside, but it's still weird, the devs were at least aware of it and gave it a playful twist. With release a few days away now, I'll see how it goes.

I'm certainly not interested in Spellforce because of the VA since I have no interest in the Witcher series, but because of the game concept / features.

What does the abbreviation FP mean if I may ask? First person view. First Person? That is odd? Where exactly have you seen this? The entire game is played from a top down perspective. In the first 2 games you *could* switch from 'first person' to top down all the time, but it is never mandatory. They even removed this for the 3th game, so only top down is left. Which is something that many fans view as controversial, according to some a blasphemy that ruins the entire game and refuse to even buy the game, but I'll spare you the drama of that. What you still can do is zoom in at closer level to see everything up more close. I'll post a link for a recent youtube video (not mine) that has some footage from the free campaign (demo) mission that was available recently.

I must have misunderstood what this thread was commenting on then: steamcommunity.com/app/311290/discussions/0/1290691308573422837/To me this sounds like before you could have a 3rd person view - in other words you can see your character and your party from the side or behind, or scroll up to close up on them, but now it is only a first person view, in other words you do not get to see your character.

I think the discussion was about 3rd person/over the shoulder look vs. top-down view, which is also third person in a way, just zoomed out. First person wouldn't make any sense for a strategy game where you need to see all units, even when they are all over the map.
Though it was a nice feature to zoom in so closely it looked like you were in the middle of the battle. I am still not convinced they dropped it completly, maybe they just changed the camera movement so that it is no longer attached to your character but still lets you zoom in, which would be fine by me.

I went ahead and bought this. I think I've played THQ games before, just can't remember which ones. Pretty rare if I have to think. I'm encouraged by the first pop up message; the devs said it isn't a fire and forget game, they will be keeping an eye on, patching as when needed, etc. Now, if they walk the walk, I'm happy. Given how some game companies and publishers *cough* rEApers *cough* have performed recently, I'm turning my attention to other companies that develop complete good SP games. There're still a few out there, hopefully they won't get gobbled up.

Given how some game companies and publishers *cough* rEApers *cough* have performed recently, I'm turning my attention to other companies that develop complete good SP games. There're still a few out there, hopefully they won't get gobbled up. Glad you like it, I know I do. Hope you won't regret your purchase. I haven't gotten far in the game but what I have noticed: - RPG recieved some (big) improvements comparing with the older games. - Character costumization was bit of a downside (and small of choice). Might improve later or not, right now I can set it aside. - The game has more dialogue and they added group companion dialogue where they talk to each other out in the open. Similar like DA/MA has with the banter. - Dialogue changes depending on who you have in the group, so maybe even quests? The game did mention this itself, so we'll see. - You have choices on how to handle situations (fight/talk it out/sneak away for example). No idea if this has a big difference in the outcome of the story. - Even random NPC have dialogue lines when you talk to them. It is just 3 or 4 different lines, but small details are important too. - The voice acting has it's ups and down with some lines. Some are good where the feeling comes across, others could use some more work. This is more or less subjective. - The maps look really impressive imo. As do the cities and towns (with the amount of resources/buildings they have to work with. - For the older fans, a lot of maps should be recognizable. Design layout and choice placement are fairly accurate when you compare the maps (~14 years between the game). For example, you have a map Farlorn's Hope that was in the first game and again in this game. There was a town middle of the map, on a hill with a path you had to slinger around to get to the 'inn' at the top. They kept that similar design and implanted it again in the 'new' map. Even the type of vegetation like wastes, forests, rivers, etc. where they are located are really similar. They made quite an effort. => So from what I can tell now is that the devs made use of the older games to build upon and use as inspiration into the new game. A lot of familiar elements, but new changes at the same time. Not everything is the same though, skills, the RTS part all though similar, they are different. However I like the change, otherwise it would have felt to much like copy paste. Cheers to the new dev team to acknowlegde the older games! (PS. That 'song' gives me the goosebumps everytime I hear it out of the blue. )

Can someone please explain the RPG aspects of this one? Can you customize anything about your main character? Can you choose a class? I saw that there is a skill tree, but is it only that? Is there meaningful choices in the game? Also, what kind of an RTS is that? I play Total War Warhammer fairly often, is this game similar to this, or is it more like star-craft lite?
I will try to answer the best as possible, but I'm only 17 hours into the game and I don't even know if I'm halfway or not. So I don't know everything yet that is possible. And I have to retract my statement earlier about the voice acting. It is quite well done and certainly am surprised for a small series like this. RPG-part:- You (the create-able character M/F) picks your own skills. You choose 3 from a total of 6 skill which you choose from start. 3 Magic and 3 non magic ones (range and melee). White, black and elemental magic and Melee, range and a third one I can't remember right now. With 'your' (avatar) having a 4th skilltree (unique) leadership which focuses more on its RTS impact.
- When you pick 3 skill tree's it will set you as 'custom' or pick one of the pre-existing classes like inquisitor, paladin, white mage, etc. which chooses your 3 skill trees for you. Once you picked 3, you can't respec to another skill tree. Any mix is fine.
- Once you picked the skills, you can choose what attributes you want to focus on, constitution, intelligence, willpower, strength and dexterity. Each on their has a particular effect, more health, faster focus regen, bigger focus pool, etc. Each one of the attributes also enhances a spell. For example a magic spell linked attribute is intelligence, therefore gets more powerful.
- You get 1 skill point per level and attribute points every other level, (not entirely sure with the attribute).
- All skills have 2 levels. Level 1 unlocks the skill (or perk/passive), with level 2 improving and/or adding effects of the spell (haste/resistance/regen/impairment/bleeding/...)
- Your companions (which are set, but up to you how you specialize them), have 2 skill tree's (the ones you picked from) but with each one of them having their unique individual skill tree with skills/spells not found in any of the other tree's). They also each have a specialty skill/perk at high level.
- You have however only 3 skills per character to use, but don't panic, you can set 3 skills in a set (4 different sets) where you can change easily during battle or out of it. So you have a AoE set, a single target (for boss) set, etc.
- You get more companions when you progress along the story, so far I have 7 (not counting avatar) and there are still more.
- Companions sometimes 'banter' with you or with each other making remarks or giving additional info about a particular quest you have. For example I brought a char during a lethal brother dispute where one loved hurting the other when no1 was looking when they kids. But since he always showed good behavior everyone thought the 'victem' made it up and had a very active imagination. Even during the confrontation you couldn't tell at all he was lying. Until one of my (scholar type)companions I brought along commented on how he clearly it is he is lying because of his behavior since he studied it in the past which baffled the 'bad' brother and influenced your decision making.
- I would assume depending on which companion you bring along it could influence the quest outcome (not all of them), although I'm not that far into the game yet and haven't been able to proof it. Mind you I do know that in the brother example your choice of answers influences whether or not both brothers come out alive or not which also influenced the response of the main quest (story related).
- Most of the quest you take will allow you to make excluding choices most of the time. There is also a notable difference in personality linked to the answer you give.
For example, I don't care kill him, or refuse to kill someone.
- When you finish a region, you have the choice which quest related region you go first on the overview world map. The dialogue also changes and I think quite possible some of the events/quest on a map change when you pick them first or later. No idea how far this goes since I'm still on my first run.
- The world overview map is something also very beautiful imo and something I have barely see throughout the years in any game. Quite sizable too!
(I''ll try to remember to post a screenshot)
- The maps themselves too are very beautiful, you can see they made a lot of effort in them. Guess it was somebody's talent on the team to make it like that.
=> Hope this helps with explaining the RPG part. No doubt I forgot some aspects of the game since you take most of the things kind of for granted. The game focuses far more on its RPG part than its RTS, but they try to keep things even accordingly. Even with the added multiplayer (don't use it personally).
=> In regards with the RTS part of your question. Comparing it to Total War Warhammer, I don't see much resemblance personally. I have never played Starcraft, just saw videos of them on youtube and from what I remember, It would be Starcraft lite as you would describe it. So far there are 3 factions you can choose to fight with. Where you can most of the time choose which faction you'll use when you are in RTS mode. You start with your HQ sector, expand gather supplies and build an army with those supplies to fight the enemy base or even quest related objectives.
Now with that said, I must say this (otherwise my conscience would be troubled) that the release has some nasty bugs in them in regards with questlines. Since there are different ways to approach or solve quests, there are some bugs in them that sometimes you can't ignore. Some don't trigger the first time, or you have to leave and re-enter the map for it to be completed. It is however noticeable that some people barely have bugs, while others have a lot of bugs (and some people just don't listen or read what they must do). And the steam forums wouldn't be steam if there weren't trolls infesting it who like to make it a bigger deal out of it then it truly is. Devs are providing quick pacthes that are reasonable to be expected with them only human beings and being a fairly small team. So I don't seem much problem in that, it can be annoying sometimes but nothing that infuriating as some of the games I played.
If you still want to know something, ask and I'll try to answer it asap and the best of my ability to make it clear.

Is there a tutorial in the full game? I played the demo and the RPG part isn't the problem but could not cope with the RTS part. I never had problems with all the previous instalments and I own them all.
I did not buy this instalment due to not being able to play the RTS part. Shame really, I love the Spellforce world and a player from the getgo years ago.

The very first campaign mission (where you play a certain story character before you make your own) is mostly that, with some occasional hint/tip to explain or highlight the new feature. There are some missions that can get hectic for you personally. So if you do end up getting the game, just search on the forums (official or steam), or ask and people will answer. Despite the number of *ahem* 'upset' people (on steam), there are people who help people here and there with hints and tips to make you notice things. Often, the game provides you some help with the RTS missions, a backdoor that is less heavily guarded, a teleportation next to the enemy base (you can obtain if you scout before), an extra quest because a certain companion you bring along that lets you control a mighty monster that makes it easier. So with this the devs did try to help out the people who might be having a hard time

Might be worth a look. Though from what I've read it's pretty buggy.

Yea, I do get the impression that they wanted a bit more time to polish things ups, because (almost) all the of the bugs that are present, are related to the 'open world' (I wouldn't use that world for it tbh) part of the game. Quests not triggering because you got there earlier than the npc, an important npc died because of an enemy attack so quest couldn't progress, you killed some of the target mobs before you got that objective. Most of the those are fixed now, with the daily patching (even in weekends ). Now it's just the side quests where 1 or 2 have the tendency to give a new problem when a fix is applied. The game is completable however since I finished it this weekend and I didn't run into that many bugs. Less than 6 I believe?. Had a run of 38+ hours and it could have been longer since I forgot some area's in the end and sometimes I applied reckless rush tactics that could have ended horrible. I liked the game very much (characters + VA loved those!), despite its flaws that could be improved later. Though I'm not entirely objective on it, since personal favour comes into play. So if you're still not sure, wait and see how it is later. Devs have also been quite active though since release through discord and pop in occasionally on the forums. Though less than at the start since they got chewed out by some people who were convinced they gave constructive criticism. Who can blame them for not showing up as often anymore. Some people have also made the comparison with Dragon Age universe because of some of the similarities (like mages are dangerous, magic is dangerous, etc.), but I think thats overthinking it. Most of the themes it used were already used even before DA used them and even when they were similar. They gave them their own twist. PS: before I forget, I did mention I would post screenshots of the overview maps (only a fraction of it). Screenshots kinda take away the magic of how you see everything move though :/ Overview map - imgur

What am I seeing. A Spellforce thread? I was a huge fan of the first game (and its very significant expansions) back in 2003-6 but IMO the world lost its attraction with the rune warriors gone. While I did enjoy SF2, its Shaikan weren't nearly as fascinating as a concept, and the end of the "Dragon Storm" expansion I found so annoying that I disown its story. I was part of the beta test of "Faith in Destiny" which resulted in me not buying it. I haven't bought SF3 so far but we'll see. From what I've seen, it does look good though for me personally, doesn't match the first game's attraction as well.
I still have the intro of SF1 in my eye and ear (well, I did replay it last year), which drew me into its world quite thoroughly, and though the VA was really bad in parts of the game, this never applied to the German voice of the female Rune Warrior, which matched my view of my main character as perfectly as nothing else since then. Her calm determination and understated non-ideological passion has always been what I'd like more fantasy heroes to be like. I even wrote a fanfic about her (non-published) where she discovered the secrets of the Circle mages, regained her immortality and then went away, disgusted about the witch hunts at the end of Dragon Storm and aware that the world wasn't ready for those secrets again as yet.
