You could actually create your entire party in the BG series - you only had to start the game in multiplayer mode. It's a pity this option was not more widely advertised. Multiplayer mode did bring in some extra UI cruft, but this could be circumvented by moving the save file from the MP save folder to the SP save folder. Heh, based on speaking with other BG fans down the years, I do sometimes wonder if I was the only person who used the MP mode for actual multiplayer rather than just creating extra characters like this.... What? You mean there was actual multiplayer? I thought the "multi" in "multiplayer mode" just meant that you could create multiple player characters...

This is a game I planned to bring up from the start, and I'm really glad someone else thought of it too, because it's a ****ing amazing game. Super Metroid does everything it tries to achieve damn near perfectly. The gameplay is top notch and the atmosphere is incredible. However, what's truly special about it is the overall level design of the game, which is what really gives it its character. Luckily I don't have to explain this at all, because the're already a wonderful, fascinating article that does it amazingly well. If you're at all interested in game design, I really, really recommend reading that. Oh god yes. I was going to say the same thing. That game blew me away. The level design was indeed excellent and the atmosphere was in fact creepy at times (wrecked ship scared the shit out of me my first play through.) I'm proud of the fact that I've been able to get all 100% items and beat the game in under 3 hours to get the best ending but that was only possible after playing it so much and remembering where everything was. Not an easy feat.

Icewind Dale -- Another D&D RPG by Black Isle. For being a self-contained adventure and story, and being able to create your entire party, I preferred it to the BG series at the time. Today, ironically, I look back more fondly on the BG series in part because of the NPC party members, though. (I never played Planescape at the time, which I regret to this day, or it might be here in this spot instead). You could actually create your entire party in the BG series - you only had to start the game in multiplayer mode. It's a pity this option was not more widely advertised. Multiplayer mode did bring in some extra UI cruft, but this could be circumvented by moving the save file from the MP save folder to the SP save folder. Yea, there was some kind of twist to have custom characters. I used it to make an anti-magic dwarven mage killer. Totally worth it. The bane of all mages.

Dude, if you're looking for a MoO successor and like history, you should check out the games by Paradox Interactive Stellaris has potential, but it still needs work (either patches or player modding) to satisfy me. I've tried and enjoyed the EU series, but I prefer Civ for the broad time frame (my current fascination is in the Bronze Age). Crusader Kings 2 has a great reputation and I've been meaning to check it out (I also have a passion for Byzantine history, so this should be a no brainer), but I haven't had a chance to get to it yet (the last several years have been busier than usual for me). Stardock's Galactic Civilizations series (2, and perhaps 3) has been the closest I've found to a successor to MoO2, but you're dead on when you say that I should be a fan of Paradox (given my interests).

Even as a serious PDox fanboy, I rather agree with you on Stellaris. There's a lot of great ideas in there, but they're not fully developed and, after the excellent early game, it tends to get very samey. Still, they've shown with past games that they're willing to put in a lot of post release development with both DLC and free patches, so I've high hopes for where the game will be in 6 months or so. People recommend CK2, but I'm going to suggest you dive in at the deep end and try Vicky 2. It's hugely complex with little in the way of good documentation but it's so rewarding once you get into it properly.

Is it just me who actually prefers The Witcher 2 based on these posts? lol I loved 3 but the quests were so overwhelming. I am so fond of TW2 though and enjoyed playing it twice to get both stories! I liked the way it broke down into three main acts, with the second act being completely different depending on who you sided with ... but overall I thought it had the weakest story ... it's actually my least favourite in the trilogy. I don't like QTEs and inescapable boss fights that rely on doing something special to beat the boss (I really, really hated the Kayren fight); TW3 does it better in that most of the big monster fights are the same as the little monster fights - you use the same skills you've trained and modify your tactics. If you focused on sword-swinging you swing your sword, alchemy you'd chug potions and lob bombs (and swing your sword) ... there's no wrong way to approach the fight just because it's a boss. No need to chain certain powers or button-presses in a certain order to win. Also, no potion chugging on combat, why?! That totally changed the way I played from TW1 to TW2 (well, that and the change from combat stances to the slightly more fluid swordplay mechanic) - I just didn't find potions, at least not for combat, to be worth the effort in the TW2 at all. But bombs were more useful. ... aaaaaand, I found act 2, siding with the Scoia'tael kinda boring I'd still put the Witcher series up as some of my favourite "fantasy" games of all time. I love the "Old World" feel to the games; possibly because they're Polish but I think CDPR have managed to get that middle-ages European exactly "right". There's so much that ties into old folklore while at the same time the game slightly takes the mickey out of the whole genre. It's a brilliant mix to my mind. I think for me it was the more straightforward and less confusing way to complete the main story. Same a DAO. I found both TW3 and DAI to have so many side quests and I think my OCD was overwhelmed by it lol I've actually beaten TW2 and TW3 but TW1 is still confusing as heck lol

My favourite game of all time is Half-Life 1. Still play through it every so often to this day.
Other honourable mentions;
> Diablo 2 > Fire Emblem(7 if I'm picking specifically, the first one released in English) > Shadowrun Returns series(Hong Kong being my favourite of the bunch) > Mass Effect > Dragon Age: Origins > XCOM 2 > Red Alert 2 > Galactic Civilizations 2 > Age of Empires 2 > Goldeneye 64

Another M.U.L.E. player, splendid . "Why don't you sell me that food? You have so much!" "Why don't you pay a reasonable price?""You're the reason the colony is going to the drains!" "Uhuh? You're a selfish dick just looking for your own profit anyway!"
Priceless . The simplicity of it's design still appeals to me today. It's a masterpiece.
Lol, that conversation feels oddly familiar . Want that food/energy ? All good things come to those who keep running upwards .

I love Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic... I just wish it had quest markers im part way through playing it at the moment haha It and Kotor 2 aren't so bad when it comes to finding quests because you'll want to check out every map those games have to offer (more likely than not). I can't believe you haven't played through those before I highly recommend a PC version of Kotor 2 with the restored content mod when you get to that (unless you pulled a Vroom and played Kotor 2 first, in that case, cheeky you).

I am decidedly not a PC gamer, but I'd give serious consideration to picking up KotOR and KotOR 2 for PC, particularly to play the second game with the restored content. It always bothered me how "gutted" the back half of that game is. It was clear from the first playthrough that the game wasn't finished. Shame that, considering some of the fun additions they'd made in the sequel, and how much I'd enjoyed some of the crew.

I want to give props to MicroProse's Darklands. Might not be the best video game ever, nor does it hold up well (there aren't many DOS games that do), but it was so forward thinking. It kind of ruined sandbox RPGs for me, in the same way Jagged Alliance 2 ruined turn based combat. Once you reach the top of Everest, it's hard to adjust to lower peaks.

So I'll list just one, THE one. For me.
The Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind
I just fell in love with it, and I still am. Never played another game that managed to capture me so much.

I've never played Skyrim....(hides in shame....) I want to know what makes it so great. I'm considering the remastered edition in October. BTW I don't know if you're playing on console or pc but if it is the latter I can recommend getting your hands on the pc goty (Skyrim Legendary Edition). People who own the game and the dlcs on pc will get the remastered edition (pc) for free. I like Skyrim mainly because of the freedom it offers. You are not forced to do anything, not even the main quest. My gf has played for hundrets of hours without finishing the main story once. The story isn't the best but the lore is very nice and there is a lot of side content that is much better than the main quest imo. Also there are tons of mods (also coming to consoles if I remember correctly)- don't like something? - find a mod that fixes it for you.
