XCOM : UFO Defense (or Defence, as it came out for you UK'ers) Came out in like 1992? Still the best game that I've seen. HL is up there too, as is ME. But for my money? No question what game has the top spot.

I choose only one game from a given franchise, seems fair
5 non-Bioware non-japanese games: (The only Bioware game that would enter this top 5 is Dragon Age Origins, rest go way below top 10) 1 - Neverwinter Nights 2 Mask of the Betrayer 2 - Tyranny 3 - Pillars of Eternity 4 - Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 5 - Shadowrun: Hong Kong (only until Divinity: Original Sin 2 takes its place which means soon)
5 non-Bioware japanese games: 1 - Dragon Quest IX 2 - Bravely Default 3 - Final Fantasy Tactics War of The Lions 4 - Pokémon Sun/Moon 5 - Chrono Trigger

Best Survival Horror Game: Bloodborne. Bloodborne is a complicated beast… let’s talk about Souls for a bit first. Souls is great. Known for combat that rewards the observant & punishes the tactically slipshod, as well as a moody forbidden world to explore with a distinctive take on looting narrative, it’s gotten a great deal of acclaim. It’s also a bit clumsy in mechanics, occasionally stale/unbalanced in combat, and the story can come off as a minimalist chase for McGuffins cause’ the king goofed up and now we’re in Dark World for some raisin. Bloodborne manages to solve many of FromSoftware’s legacy issues while throwing in an appropriately disturbing storyline, and a few curveballs with nightmarish outcomes. Hidetaka once described it as mixing the better parts of Demon’s/Dark souls, and well, it kind of is. Layer Number One: Audio/Visual. Unlike Demon’s Depress-A-Thon and Dark’s penchant for Full Choirs pretending they’re at the dentist, the soundtrack has a healthy assortment of moody ambient & unconventional orchestrations that holds a unique vibe outside of its dark fantasy predecessors. Voice acting is great(and less prone to cackling). There’s also a greater distinction between voices too, anywhere betwixt age differences and specific accents, you hoonter of hoonters, you. Visually it borders between PS3 and PS4, but boy what they do with it. Visual detail plays a bigger part, environments are lush with gothic architecture, and plenty I’m best leaving for people to figure out by themselves. Monster types are less of the classic fantasy/berserk stylization and more of the otherworldly abomination-y kind. A scarce few visual issues mar the experience - specific spots don’t always load of how they’re supposed to and look low-rez, though it‘s a very brief problem. Otherwise, they got it right. Layer Number Two: Gameplay. Shields are pretty much gone. Yep! If you can dodge a wretch, you can dodge a ball of ravens gunning for your throat. Shields are hardly a great fit in the Victorian era setting, and this revision can radically alter your tactics - in other words, you can’t just stand their like a ninny and wait for your foe to finish his attacks. Re-Gain is great. If you’re hit, you can hit back relatively soon and get some health back. It’s not something that most will use persistently(unless you’re as mad as the Yharnamites themselves), but it adds a neat flavor to the overall mechanics, providing greater motivation to go on the offensive. Transformation Weapons as a whole are a much-needed breadth of fresh blood. I hardly miss the Dark Souls days of having to grab a bazillion shards to even build a bloody boss weapon, with the normal equipment close to throwaway ability. What you lose in quantity is greatly made up for in quality. Even starter weapons allow instant shifts between range-over-damage, power-over-speed, with later weapons taking more unusual transformations. I’d actually *stuck* with the saw from beginning to end, as the weaponry scaling(or lack thereof?) encourages you to stick more with a certain style than just a convenient stat boost. Boost what you like, not what you get thrown into. Boss Phases - It’s a big deal. DS 1 & 2 had this on *occasion*, but now it’s all over the bloody place. Slogging over a shadowy colossus with the same tactics simply isn’t an option, as new forms(and new enemies?) means a deeper level of challenge which hasn’t seen as much frequency in the series. Level design maintains the Overarching world of Dark Souls, while using a few tricks of Demon’s like using locked shortcuts to bridge the player between close-by areas with greater ease. Chalice Dungeons are an anomalous thing - essentially it’s a roguelike with Dark Souls, and it’s as great as it sounds. Suffers a tiny bit with repetition(which is hardly a surprise), but overall it’s a fun romp with some bosses later on that outmatch the difficulty of the vanilla game, and are actually a pillar of the game’s overall lore to boot. Cause nothing says fun like using a couple glowing slugs and a pool of blood to enjoy some inter-dimensional jolly coagulation. The Dream And The Nightmare
Storywise, it comes with some notable changes from its antecedents. Most of your character’s actions in Quests or with Bosses from Souls may not feel like they’re accomplishing much. Opening paths, and opening more paths, and Le Final Boss. Yep. Bloodborne helps lay this to rest; Bosses aren’t just random demons that fit the area; Their stories and subsequent quests can be interconnected, opening a a hodgepodge of answers and a Pandora’s box of questions. While Souls *does* come with its own revelations, they may not always have bearing on the main story itself - this is also where BB diverges as main game areas and even Chalice Dungeons play an enormous role in building up the lore. The way FS handles the immense backstory reminds me a bit of Chrono Cross in terms of gradually explaining the setting’s original state, and the transition to its phantasmagoric masterpiece. Having said all this, it’s one of the best narratives FromSoftware has managed. One of the greatest fears is that of the unknown, and Bloodborne comes with this in spades. And that’s about as far as I can go without spoilers. Seriously though don’t touch the lava. Should you Traverse the Nightmare? If you’re looking for a challenge, Dark Victorian/Lovecraftian storytelling, and a game full of dark surprises, look no further: Here‘s your dream game. Honorable Mentions: Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Demon's/Dark SoulsFavorite Side Scroller: Megaman X. The framework of Megaman gets an extreme makeover to greatly enhance Character Movement(which sort of looks like a live showing of Mega Man on Ice!), which in turn helps fuel character exploration in more interesting ways than the first. I wonder if the bonkers upgrades from Mega Man 6 had a hand in that. It has superb level design, great boss battles, and one of my favorite retro soundtracks of yesteryear. The sequels up to X4 are all great too. Honorable Mentions: Shovel Knight, Demon's Crest, Gunstar Heroes, Braid. Best Immersive Sim: Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Yes, the game every hardcore nerd and their basement-dwelling mother's raved about. Honorable Mentions: Bioshock, Thief II: The Metal Age, System Shock 2Best Open-World-Ish Character-Focused Game: Yakuza 4. What? I've already made a review for this?! Save me, spoiler box! Aiieeeeeeee! Would you like to do something terrible today? With a surprisingly multifaceted plot, a realistic set of characters, and an authentic portrayal of Japanese cityscapes from the smallest box of ramen noodles to the elaborate glowing vistas and entertaining combat, it makes for one hell of an experience. So, Let’s talk about Yakuza 4. For now, starting Skin Deep: Graphically, the first thing that caught my attention is the level of facial expression in the cinematic performances. Subtle parts of human expression(even with reflections off of one’s eye) applied in Yakuza 4 all add up to a far more believable performance than the mannequin-styled Body/Facial motions more commonly seen in the video game industry. As far as the game itself, well, it varies. The engine looks to be from the Mid-PS3 era, though the frame rate seems to be better than some of its open-world competition. As mentioned above, it has a surprising sense of atmosphere; A Japanese metropolis down to an Assassin’s Creed-esque level of detail. They’ve also got some nice weather touches, like seeing the growth of rain puddles on the concrete floor. Complaints… I’ve seen NPC pop-up. Not too frequently if due to the compact nature of Komurochi‘s streetlines. While the main characters can look more impressive than the current PS4 Line-Ups, minor NPCs are definitely showing their age. Other than that, the overall quality holds up a lot better than some I can think of. It’s also worth noting that the cinematics are also greatly enhanced to professional level Staging/Camera Work, akin to the Metal Gear Franchise. One scene in Act 3 makes something as mundane as walking around a cornered hallways a treat of anticipation, and they occasionally throw some curveballs like first person in some of the more tense scenes. Audio’s pretty great. Ambience of tinny radios playing Japanese tunes helps add the vibe of Japan’s petite shops and eateries. Voice acting’s spot on - Zero complaints there. Music’s pretty nice, and that one ‘Chase’ song sounds like it was pulled straight out of Deadly Premonition, with a saxophonist who sounds like he’s had one too many of the “special” brownies. Characters are seriously boss. Shun Akiyama is Suave, Wealthy, and a grab bag of oddities. At least on the surface, he should have a beatles-style crowd of women falling for him. Despite the debonair façade, he embraces humility and hardly thinks about the wealth obtained over the years. Maybe a little lazy, but just a little. Of the Main 4, he’s the one I identify most with. Taiga Seijima; Perhaps a simple man, but his history is anything but. It’s *really* easy to put him off initially as a mindless thug based off his cinematic debut, at least due to superficial(Superhuman?) reasons. To an extent, he puts out that flame during the story as well, albeit maintaining his badassery After-The-Fact. Tanimura, don’t have much to say about him. His character holds an important role, but seems more interesting for plot reasons than personality. The Gameplay would be a bit like taking Rockstar Games(GTA, L.A. Noire) and mixing them with Shenmue. Outside of Cinematics/Dialogue, SEGA gives the player quite a bit of variety. The combat is a jumble of fighting games and wrestling games. The moveset seems less focused on lengthy combo memorizations of classical Fighting Games, and more on context-sensitive moves I.e. grabbing your opponent’s legs, and pressing a button to send him twirling towards freedom. This can also depend on your character as well; Shun is the more balanced starting character, and the more “spunky” of the 4. He’s the Ryu of Yakuza, the balanced starting character. Saejima is a bear. He focuses mostly on grab attacks and the brute strength that comes with being a Classy Colossus. Tanimura is very conservative, being most notable for his enhanced parry attack. On the direct opposite side, the last character available is an absolute showboat, making use of the HEAT system’s cinematic specials to piledrive your way to victory. Also my favorite fighting character. The HEAT system is the meter that grows as you beat up baddies and such - more special moves become available to use as it grows. You’re blue now, if you did it right. Despite being by and large an entertaining romp, there are some downsides to the fighting. The AI can vary between very boring and overbearing. Your average mob on the streets of Kamurocho mostly spend their time wobbling about with hands raised in fists and *occasionally* throwing a swing, essentially being a Glass-Joe punching bag for the player. On the other hand, the named characters put up a much better fight and have AI/abilities unique to their character. HP Bloating is a thing. Sometimes it matches fairly well…but in one case near the very end of the game, I was literally surrounded by health-ballooned minions and a person who should’ve easily fallen the first few times I twisted his arm. I had to redo a huge length of fighting due to only having a few health drinks. And this was on easy mode. The frequency of the street fights is seems a bit high, and the reasoning for half of them is pushing the envelope of believability. Other cases like opposing gang members seem like more tangible reasoning, though. It’s amusing to see crowds build around the two in true Street Fighter logic. Still, the way they made dynamic events play out instead of the old walk-into-a-scripted-moment shtick of common GTA/Saints Row is a nice touch. It’s not perfect, but I had a hell of a time with Yakuza 4’s combat. Outside of the brawler’s corner, the entire city holds an extensive list of secondary options for your entertainment, advancement, and enrichment. As they *are* aiming for true-to-reality depictions, there’s a wealth of electronic entertainment. Arcades hold a shooter and the ole’ crane game, and Karaoke is an appropriately kooky Parappa-The-Rapper-esque Maraca-thon. Ole? More hardcore games like Competitive Mahjong allow for long-lasting fun. If you’re more of the management type, both recruiting Fighters and Hostesses in Dojos/Bars is pretty neat, and comes with a healthy level of customization to boot. A couple of these are tied in quite well into the story, keeping them from being thrown out as trivial pursuits. Typically, our preconceived notion of Organized Crime involve a few bad men playing chess with the lives of men with even worse ethical dispositions. All games of chess have their pawns; And after 18 hours for the main story alone, it proved to be a long game indeed. Juggling a list of character arcs with a lengthy list of intrigue and growing sense of mystery to the world of Yakuza, Y4 has one of the best Main Stories to a video game I’ve seen quite some time. It’s pretty much the only time I could empathize with characters tied into Mafia-esque scenarios. I didn’t like the Godfather. Sorry.I can definitely see Chewin enjoying this moreso than something with the borderline-gonzo tone of Deadly Premonition. Metal Gear certainly has an influence(and there *is* a character named Hideo with a slight resemblance), but I’d say it has more to do with emphasis on Cinematography/Character Focus than the Supernatural Hyperrealism and more Tech-Heavy themes MGS is known for. Also, they have major connections to previous games but can be enjoyed independently as well. They’re similar, but I definitely wouldn‘t categorize it as a clone. Despite the fact that people are piledriving each other and some of those revelations are absolutely nutball, the main story keeps itself grounded in reality. Their ability to make “villains” with complex circumstances, building and growing certain “events” in meaningful ways over time is stellar, and seemingly innocent observations early on can flip it into something more eye-opening. The meeting between Lily & Shun seemed like a casual take on classic P.I. shtick. Again, more playing off of innocent observations like “Drama Queen”. A bit curious why someone who murdered so many would grab evidence that *might* lead others there. Doesn’t look like a smoker, but I guess we’re going by “she’s thinking unclearly cause brother” logic. I like the sense of professionalism, honor, and respect that’s a bit more apparent with Yakuza than classic mafia stories. Not that there isn’t backstabbing, but the way they do it is goddamned brilliant. I was metaphorically blown away by the true story for the “Ueno Incident”, I’d have never thought of *that* being on the table as a possibility. Act 2 is a bit more tense for a start-up, another set-up in characters/settings which add subtle foreshadowing. I’d forgotten Kiryu was even a main character while playing, so it was a neat suprise to see him get a bigger tie-in to the story than what I’d expected. Playing as Seijima in Komurochi is like playing Nosferatu in VtmB. That tournament scene, pretty ballsy. In the game’s scenarios where unnecessary death is constantly at their doorstep, it’s a nice addition to see at least some of our “mindless thugs” still hold their humanity. Act 3 is *slightly* boring, until Yosuka gets thrown into the mix. It becomes more apparent in Act 2 that there’s an air of mystery for this particular story, but it’s Act 3 where that sort of kicks in full gear. Fortunately even as that gets unveiled, there’s still other major events like the 2005 Millenium Tower incident and where dat moneh went that come into play. Katsuragi’s probably the closest we have to a mwahaha villain, but he doesn’t really revel in it. Like a cockroach, he’s dead set on staying alive. Kido & Dojima aren’t evil per se, but they’re certainly a product of an environment where the only way to climb up(or stay alive) is kicking off those below you. We fight or we die, that’s the plan. And Munakata, well, it’s harder to say since he lived through a very different time than most of our characters(and players). The end itself is a clever mix of Poetic Justice and Parallel. Use the root of all evil to literally root *out* evil. And everybody takes their shirt off so 10 out of 10 wait wtf?! I didn‘t know grabbing your shoulder was an insta-naked move. I guess this is Shokugeki no Soma logic or something. Ok. The epilogue is appropriate in keeping with Kiryu‘s mantra of Tojo Clan‘s stamp on the world. Overall, that was really something special. So yep, it’s the exception to the rule. Lol S’great. Go git it. Honorable Mention: The Persona Series. Best Philosophical-Theming: Planescape: Torment. Philosophy taps into concepts anywhere from the nature of reality, to the how's and why's of our belief systems. Especially in a setting like this, it's a doubly-unconventional conduit to speak towards the human condition. And boy, does it speak. Most factions are "oh, we're warring at each other because ideological disagreements"; There is no great conflict besides your own, though there are some scarce bits of factional disputes. If you enjoy a good great halfway-decent role-playing game, it's time to update your gaming library with this gem. Honorable Mention: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith LordsBest Music Game: I Have No Idea. In terms of pure fun factor, the first two Rock Band games are definitely at the top. But I'd be remiss to not mention Dance Dance Revolution and the rockabilly precursors Guitar Freaks/ Drummania, which were co-operatively playing alongside each other long before Harmonix built a more polished and varied Single-Player experience of the same thing. The original DJ Hero is still a lost gem, one of the few AAA music games besides Harmonix that broke the mold in innovation. You could argue BEMANI game Beatmania's also been doing DJ simulation for a long time, but the "realism" isn't quite at the same level as DJ Hero. IIDX was mostly randoized key sampling and carpal tunnel, whereas DJH 1 & 2 had 2 records playing alongside each other and the scratching actually scratched. Both allowed a little bit of freestyling to spice them up too. They're all great. Other Favorites: Chrono Cross, Mother 3, Secret of Mana/ Seiken Densetsu 3, Warcraft III/World of Warcraft, Super Metroid, Psychonauts, Sonic CD/Fangame Sonic ATS, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Final Fantasy VI, Ico/Shadow of the Colossus/The Last Guardian, SOMA, Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Axelay Link To The Past/Majoras Mask, Valkyrie Profile, Split Second/Burnout Paradise, DOOM(90's version with Brutal Doom mod or New one), The Longest Journey, Myst/Obduction, Hand of Fate, Condemned, Deadly Premonition, Witcher II: Assassins of Kings, and of course UnderRail.

Obviously I can't avoid being biased when it comes to making a list like this, but I will try to include games that I personally enjoyed a lot and I believe most gamers who played have also enjoyed. Also, I will not include Bioware games as we all here know them and love them.
In chronological order:
Donkey Kong Country 2 (1995) - I just love this game. Dixie Kong was first my video game crush and the soundtrack is so damn addictive, particularly 'Stickerbrush Symphony'. Oh, the 90's.
Castlevania: Symphony of the night (1997) - Who hasn't played this masterpiece? I am not that old, so I didn't get to play too many 2D games and for me this game has been the quintessential action 2D experience. Beautiful and artistic design, dark/vampiric/gothic atmosphere, symphonic and haunting music. Simply a classic.
Resident Evil 2 (1998) and Resident Evil 3 (1999) - These games were pretty ahead of their time. They offered tons of replay value, weapons that felt so unique from one another, different skins and the challenge of speed-running.
Parasite Eve (1998) - SquareSoft goes survival horror. Just like that. Still, this game is very JRPG-ish. The story and the combat are amazing.
Vagrant Story (2000) - Oh boy. Beautiful art, beautiful stories, amazing puzzles, great combat and tons of grinding. This game is unforgettable.
Ace Combat 5 (2004) - This game for me was love as first sight, it almost felt like it was made for me. I just love everything about it - story, combat, songs, the missions. It has always been in the Top 5.
Age Of Empires 3 (2005) - Yeah, I played AoE2, and some will say it was better. I dare to disagree. AoE3 is an improvement in every way, much better looking, extremely well polished and it was the game that got me into PC gaming. So yeah, I just have to include it here.
Fallout 3 (2008) - I played it. I killed the mutants. I sang the songs. Enough said.
Civilization V (2010) - This game has the most addictive non-multiplayer formula I have seen in a game. You pretty much do the same stuff over and over, yet there seem to be infinite replay value. It is a shame console peasants won't get to try it.
TES V Skyrim (2011) - We have all played it, I suppose. My reasons for loving it are just like everyone else's.
Borderlands 2 (2012) - Super funny, super original and the combat is just crazy. Also it has Maya who is another of my video game crushes.
Dead Space 3 (2013) - This game is totally different from the rest of the series, quite more action oriented. But the action, the weapons and the freedom you have to create weapons, boy, you just feel like a mad weapons engineer from hell. The scenery is amazing and it is still a very haunting experience, especially when you play with a friend.

Parasite Eve (1998) - SquareSoft goes survival horror. Just like that. Still, this game is very JRPG-ish. The story and the combat are amazing. Before I started hating every nano tiny little bit of action Parasite Eve was my favorite RPG ever, but now the need of moving during combat to avoid attacks killed the game for me. Funny thing since back then it was the very thing that made the combat unique and interesting for me. The only thing I look for in a game now is to watch combat based on my stats while I do nothing. Nostalgia-wise I would still like to see a remake from Square, even knowing it would be FFXVish 100% action 0% RPG, and being sure I would never touch it. It would still be amazing to just watch the 2017 gorgeous cutscenes on youtube, Parasite Eve is after all a cinematic RPG.

I had never before ever, been so much into a game before this. This was Dark Souls before it even existed.

Thanks for the update! I'll check them, I remember The Dig and Blade Runner, not a great Star Trek fan, but I'll look into it as well.

I wouldn't say these are the best games ever, but here are a few that have sticking power in my house. Burnout Revenge and Paradise SSX on Tour DA and ME, naturally, though not so much ME3 Dungeon Keeper Halo 1-4 and Halo Wars Minecraft Oh, and Arcanum. That was my intro to modern RPGs and it's still amazing. I came to Baldur's Gate too late. I love the characters but the D&D rules make it sooo slow. I'm addicted to health potions and revive spells now. Jade Empire is fantastic, though. I would love an updated story in that world.

Sports wise I'd say Fifa as I always seem to enjoy playing that and Codemasters F1 games.
Both the ME and series and by that I mean al of them including Andromeda.
I would als oasy I really enjoy playing the To,mb Raider reboots 2013 Rise and Shadow.
