Do not buy Intel now. They have a massive bug that they can't fix. Yeah, most mobo manufacturers have already released the firmware updates for those affected mobos but personally, I don't believe it is a permanent fix. It is series of major security vulnerabilities in the Intel Management Engine that could allow attackers to fully gain control of your computer. Honestly, it is not really a surprise given how shitty Intel's ME and AMT are. And no, you can't fully disable the Intel ME because it also manages thermal and system clocks. Personally, I'm quite skeptical about the patch. It definitely doesn't fix all all security flaws but I'm also skeptical that any of us would get hacked through the Intel ME bug exploits. So yeah, if OP wants to keep the mobo, he should definitely update the ME firmware.

It's not the Management Engine bug. It's a processor architecture bug. Can't be patched with microcode updates. OS'es themselves will have to be redesigned to isolate the problem. Linux patch is out, M$ is preparing one too.

Wow. This is actually completely new to me and it looks like there's still an embargo on the news.
If this is real, Intel is fucked for sure. I guess it's time to sell your INTC shares while they're still at an all time high.

well lets see the bios update fix hits you with a 50% performance decrease, the os patch thats being rolled out this month hits you with a 35% performance decrease and the IME patch hits you with a 35% performance decrease..... so a stable secure "fixed" intel cpu by my calculation will have around 35% of its listed performance and thats just for sky/kaby range cpu's, if you push forward or backward in cpu's your only restricted to 60% performance hit (since one of the bugs is specific to those two generations only) although one has to wonder how the tech world didn't notice them for a decade .... clearly intel's been paying people off trying to hide things just like always given those parameters an fx cpu would be a massive upgrade to a 6 or 7th gen cpu actually the disable HT bios fix was reported back in the summer for sky/kaby cpu's which made me wonder just how "unbiased" all these review people were when thye claimed the 7700k was better than everything else.... when a certain nameless reviewer put out a vid showing that ryzen 5 cpu's were 35% better than the i7770k he clearly was running a patched intel cpu, something the rest of the industry made sure he "fixed" for an updated review.... no great surprise there, another reviewer posted results showing that intel cpu's were the leetzors yet every pc he built for the last 4 months was ryzen based (makes no sense until you see yesterdays breaking news) oh he wasn't going ot let the hushmoney dry up but he wasn't going to schill for them either wost thing of all is these "bugs" are the same ones that infected the p3 all those years ago, the same ones that were talked about in relation to the d series pentiums back in 2006, but that shouldn't be a massive surprise since intel has been using the same architecture just die shrunk for faster speeds and more cores bolted together ..... which explains why the same thing was tru back in the Pentium d series compared to amd cpu's back in the day (intel had way higher ipc) and also explains why amd never once used that same cpu design..... anyhow the 50% performance hit was made public back in July for the 6/7th gen cpu's, the IME performance hit was known about back in august for all intel cpu's (another 35% performance hit) meaning even the newest 8th gen cpu's were barely able to hold their own against fx cpu's never mind ryzen, and now yet another bug is announced which will mean yet another 35% performance hit for every cpu since p3 ...... the only real change since hte p3 was changing the substrate so it didn't burst into flames during normal operation (and yes i had a p3 that literally burst into flames during normal use, not to worry though intel sent me a faster amd based system and a check for £50, something they did to just about everyone that suffered from the same problem before they released the early non ht p4's) the funniest thing in all this is that Linux just patched out for all cpu's, ms will probably do the same (even though amd cpu's are not affected) and just like when disabling HT happened in the summer gaming industry "news" articles are telling people not to worry because this performance hit wont affect gaming performance ...... which means there going ot release tweaked versions of all the testing programs to keep showing intel has higher scores lol

So why did you get a GTX 970 and 24GB of RAM in the first place when what you play is mainly 90s games? I do not play mainly games from the 1990's I play games from 2003 to current. So the GTX 970 is perfectly a viable graphics card. If you want I will list the over 350 games I have played. Doubt I could run FOUR games, 3 video and 3 editing programs -encoding and saving, having music running, 15 folders, 50 internet tabs on an Intel processor... without the Intel processor locking up -and that is on a light work load day. Whoa. Calm down. If you want to make up random stuff and have a fan boi war, you can do it yourself. I am calm. I am not trying to start some fan war. I am not making things up: All I am trying to say is that I have used Intel and AMD CPU's. And EVERYTIME I try to do what I want to do with an Intel chip it always overheats and kills my hardware. Again I am a heavy multi-tasker and THIS is a light day.

So if I have an intel processor, what should I do? And what would be involved in replacing a processor? just apply the os patch that will come out in a few weeks as to replacing it nothing right now would be my advice wait and see how it effects your usage once the problems are patched out, see if there is a better product on the market it might be that intel will release its 9th or 10th generation cpu's early as a way to mitigate this issue (probably with a free replacement for all non delided 8th gen cpu's if it wants to stay in business) failing that your looking at getting a ryzen based cpu which means swapping out the mobo and again i would wait for a few weeks until ryzen2 is officially launched by amd and then either get one of the first generation ryzen cpu's as their price drops a bit more or get one of the new ones as part of an upgrade bundle (almost guaranteed they will do the same bundle offerings that they did the first time round) another option especially if you primarily play older games is do nothing dont even apply the patches to your existing pc and get a new pc or tablet for doing anything other than playing games on

Also my computer handles it just fine with double this. Playing four games at once while editing and encoding three videos? Yes, you are. LOL Why is that insane? Did I miss some memo about political correctness? I do not see why it is insane for me to play multiple games while editing. For me there is no slowing down of the machine, no jagging while playing, no computer lock ups... So it is not a problem for me. Can your Intel processor not do this? If so that explains why I always burned Intel CPU's up. I guess they are just not built for my level of multi-tasking. As long as my Amd CPU can though I am content. I am not going to just sit there and twiddle my fingers in circles while I wait for the encoding to complete. I gotta do something -I gotta keep myself busy -always. Not doing something and just sitting there doing nothing to me is boring as watching paint dry -something that I have actually done -boring indeed. Most would probably say that is not relaxing to multi-task but I find multi-tasking very relaxing. I am a busy body and like being so if others are otherwise so be it. I still will get more done in my day than most still here.
