What are some good visual novels to play through? I'm replaying Katawa Shoujo to see all of the routes, and I've just finished up my first runthrough of Doki Doki Literature Club (will be goign through again for the true ending). It doesn't really matter what genre of visual novel it is, whether it's a dating sim or something like Ace Attorney.

I've only played two so far; don't like much of what I see of the rest, art style and such.

Have you played Fate/Stay Night? Also I've heard Dies Irae is good.

Have you played Fate/Stay Night? Also I've heard Dies Irae is good. I've heard of the Fate/Stay series, but have no experience with it. In my own experience, I like VNs that toy with and subvert typical VN tropes and traits, like KS or Doki Doki.

VNs I liked: Analogue: A Hate Story and its sequel; Fading Hearts; Long Live The Queen (more a manager/simulator, than a VN); Hustle Cat; Doki Doki Literature Club, which you've mentioned.
Currently playing Ladykiller In A Bind. So far, so good.
I completed (reached the credits, collected all achievements) If My Heart Had Wings and Sakura Agent. The only good things about them were trading cards and achievements (and the "Skip" function). Played Steins;Gate for a half an hour, then refunded, because of its plot (and the avatar) and controls.

I'm not typically a big fan of VNs, but I freaking loved Umineko ~When They Cry~. If you like the mystery novel genre (particularly the works of Agatha Christie) and mind screws, I highly, highly recommend it. It's available in two halves on Steam.

There's one currently free for PS Plus users (PS4/Vita), Psycho Pass: Mandatory Happiness. If you're on PS4 you have to manually search for it as it doesn't show in the free games. I know exactly nothing about it, but the retail price was like 50 bucks so why not
I've only played the Zero Escape Trilogy (999>>>VLR>ZTD) and was pretty much glued to my handheld for the duration.

Have to have a little knowledge of the anime it is based on to play it. I don't think it's necessary, I played it for about 45 minutes and was not lost. Although I probably would be now as that was nearly two weeks ago. It would probably be beneficial, certainly, (I'm pretty sure the game preview video said something along those lines) but there's a ton of exposition at the start. I think it sets things up well enough. Can't go wrong with a $0 price tag though.

I really do need to watch this anime though, it looks right up my alley. The story runs parallel to the first season of the anime, according to some friends of mine watching it is probably a good idea EDIT: Ah shoot, it's the Vita version. Nevermind then.

EDIT: Ah shoot, it's the Vita version. Nevermind then. PS4 and Vita. You can get both, I don't own a Vita. I honestly don't know anyone who does. If you do get it/play it, let me know if it's worth getting back into. I've got a bunch of games on the go and this one sort of fell behind a stack of them.

Eh, I just bought a months PS Plus for the Vita, so I'm playing it now. Liking the music so far but I would expect no less from 5pb, same guys who composed for Steins Gate.

What is a visual novel? Is that something like an adventure game? Like Secret Files: Tunguska?

What is a visual novel? Is that something like an adventure game? Like Secret Files: Tunguska? No. It's like dialogues from ME, but (usually) in 2D and taking the whole game. There are no puzzles or any other form of gameplay. Kinetic VNs don't support any input from the player, except clicking to the next line. VNs translated to English usually include softcore, which leads to certain prejudice against the genre. Wikipedia article. Some games, mentioned above, have more diverse gameplay (such as Danganronpa or Long Live The Queen). Should you try to browse Steam for VNs, avoiding Nekopara and If My Heart Had Wings is recommended.

That would get way too tedious for me.

Depression Quest might be a good example (there are stats to manage and several endings). If I'm not mistaken, there are options for auto-forward. There are some free-to-play VNs on Steam to try, such as Doki Doki Literature Club and Rising Angels: Reborn. DDLC has one mini-game and some horror elements.

It is as much a video game as Telltale Games are. Som visual novels offer some intricate gameplay on top of the dialogue like Ace Attorney, Dangan or Zero Escape.

I play mostly otome visual novel, but I think everyone can enjoy CollarXmalice, Code: Realize - guardians of rebirth or Hakuoki. And Sweet fuse: at your side is not much story wise, but is very funny.
Stein Gate is good, so is Psycho Pass: mandatory happiness.
I still haven't played those, but Root letter and Chaos; child are both interesting.

I played Fate/Stay Night and most of Ace Attorney franchise, except the crossover with Professor Layton and the one with Phoenix's ancestor. One day I'll try the fanmade ones. But I don't know if I'd call AA a visual novel. It certainly dependes much more on player interaction than the rest.

I dunno I tried Doki Doki literature club but found it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow, seems to be a common trend among visual novels that they seem to be written by people so in love with their own writing that they can't bear to part with a single paragraph, takes way to long for anything interesting to happen and most of it is uninteresting filler text that really does not further the plot in any meaningful way or give any deeper insight into anything.

Assuming you're not a slow reader, a full runthrough of Doki Doki should take you about 4 hours. The horror is subtle at the beginning, but kicks off at the end of Act 1 and continues for the rest of the game. Part of what makes it so interesting is the juxtaposition of what looks like your typical dating sim visual novel contrasted with the super-meta existential, almost Lovecraftian horror that is actually encountered throughout the latter 2/3 of the game.
