Are you staying along the coast, or do you have the time/freedom to move inland a bit? Hit the Channel Islands NP when you get through LA. Make sure to drive up Highway 1 and spend some time in Big Sur (just be sure to check for landslides in advance and adjust your route accordingly.) Stay out of San Francisco proper if you don't want to get caught in godawful traffic. Try to spend some time at Patrick's Point State Park, one of the best hidden gems in the US (plan accordingly, this sells out fast.) Remember that in the Redwoods, you can't stay in the National Park proper, but you can stay in any of the State Parks, like Jedediah Smith State Park - the NP is administered jointly with the state of California, and a lot of the Redwood territory is located inside the state parks. If you can go inland, hit Lassen Volcanic NP in northern California, stay for an evening or two in Weed, smoke some weed, and marvel at the enormity of Mt. Shasta which utterly dominates the skyline of the Southern Cascades. Thanks man. We plan on somehow skirting L.A. because of the traffic. Sad to hear that San Francisco isn't any better. We're staying at a airbnb in a part of San Diego called North something. Supposedly it's a nice area. Bummed to hear I can't camp out in the redwood forest. What if we do it anyway? Is there a fine? Jail time? Oh, you can definitely camp in the Redwood forests man, it just has to be in a State Park, not the National Park proper - but really, there are no marked borders to where the park begins and ends. I think they give permits for some people to do some 'off-site' camping, but most people have to stay in a spot - still, there's really no difference between the state parks and the National Park proper. Seeing as how important and endangered the Redwoods are? Yeah, yeah, you can expect a very hefty fine and probably some jail time. I wouldn't chance it, nor would I condone it on moral grounds.

Go for a week to Torres del Paine. Yeah, that's a bit outside his price range - flights to Santiago run at a few grand. Plus, there's the 8+ hour flight, the connections, and actually getting to the part of Chile where TDP NP is from Santiago. Santiago itself would probably be a connection, since you'd be needing to get to Punta Arenas. I've never been to Chile, but it's a very mountainous area, at very high altitude, and that means the usual: travel is going to be particularly difficult, cumbersome, long, and thus very expensive. And as I stated, I don't think the OP is the type of person who has the patience to do it the cheap way (aka, the hard/fun way.) TDP is not the place to visit if you only have a week +/- a few days, and it's especially not the place to go for a vacation on a stipulated budget with a clarified end time. True. I recomend a 1 week stay in Punta Cana (Dominican Republic). Damn good place, just relax and take sun on the beach in the day and party out in the night.

I've had several people recommend Punta Cana before. I've never been there though.

As far as Caribbean islands go, my experience is kind of limited.
While not on my 'hot' list per se, I do plan on getting out there eventually - Dominica in particular is where I'd like to spend a lot of time. It isn't called "The Nature Island of the Caribbean" for nothing.
Speaking of which, that's a great vacation idea for the OP - Go to the Caribbean. It's not necessarily cheap, but several places you can find some sweet spots without forking over too much.

I would like to go to Cuba at some point, but I think some political concerns are still extant. Obama's trip helped a lot to improve relations, but other factors are still in play, and with the lost cheeto in the West Wing, I don't see things getting improving any more given his predilections. I had an opportunity to go a few years ago, but I skipped it to focus on a professional development course.

They have a few racial mixes and a lot of the people are just really good looking.

I need a real vacation in 2018. My first idea was the Rio Carnival, but I have since decided against it. What is a good thing to do for a good vacation in 2018? are you going solo or with others? since your not mentioning it i'll assume you mean solo, in which case your best bet is google some outward bound /explorer place and book yourself into a group there, if your going with one or more people that changes things somewhat, indeed rough camping one of the trails across the rockies in late autumn is i'm told to die for..... then again whats wrong with doing the grand canyon water sports package deal or indeed Disney world, there both good solo or in a group your limit on what you do is you and your limit on what you call a real holiday is you, for me a real holiday is every day (thats retirement for you) although i have bene getting bored of it lately i'm sure that will pass as the weather picks up later in the year
