Okay, new idea for Droop the goblin.
I'll have him hanging out at the Shrine of Tymora, and the priestess there (who's also a Harper Agent) will help him access his innate magical skills, turning him into a chaos sorcerer.
If the party ends up in really dire straits, I can have him turn up, having followed them to help his friends with his new magical skills and some healing potions (from the shrine). Also, being a sorcerer, he'll want to look the part, so he'd be dressed in an old bathrobe that's way too big for him, a conical hat with hand-drawn stars on it, and a fake beard glued to his face.
He'll still only be first or second level, so he won't overshadow the party. But he could be a bit of good karma coming back to them if a little extra firepower could turn the tide of battle (barring some really unfortunate wild surges)

(If it's dead... dragons have families, know what I mean? ) It escaped, barely. Though not before dropping the cleric, and tearing up the fighter a bit too. Kinda funny, the entire first round of combat no one hit ANYTHING save the fighter's offhand attack. Then it got bloody.

Dragons can be so much fun, especially when the players don't know they're dealing with dragons. Or, more especially, when they don't realize they're dealing with a different type of dragon than they think they're dealing with.

Well, they were warned in advance by the local druid that a dragon was making it's den there. I confess I kinda went easy on the party, splitting up its attacks rather than focusing on one player at a time. I justified it by the dragon being so young and basically being out on its own for the first time. It didn't even have much of a hoard

Well, they were warned in advance by the local druid that a dragon was making it's den there. Well, I guess NOW they learned that they are crunchy, and good with ketchup. Dragons plans that are stated as "A dragon? Lets kill it!" with no other planning earn a "Are you sure?" DM question. Answers in the affirmative usually mean dice fall where they may, and weightings favor the "runnings-away-yelling-'RUN AWAY'" options. I confess I kinda went easy on the party, splitting up its attacks rather than focusing on one player at a time. I justified it by the dragon being so young and basically being out on its own for the first time. It didn't even have much of a hoard Not a bad thing; I'd have the dragon relocate elsewhere, but as it ages, and gains minions, it would want to keep tabs on those invaders that evicted it from it's first home... it has a long time to plan, and plan carefully. (Group gains draconic nemesis...)

That kinda was their plan, yeah I probably will bring him back at a later point. Perhaps as a "random" encounter a few levels from now. Dragons age slowly, so I can't really increase it's power level all that much.

Dragons age slowly, so I can't really increase it's power level all that much. It has friends, family. Just because the conventional wisdom is that Dragons are loners doesn't mean the conventional wisdom is right, just that none but the dragons ever seem to survive such a conclave. Especially when other, uninvited, attendees are really, really, tasty when smothered in sauce. And sans sauce, as well.

Just replace "The Badgers" with the "Phoenix Company" and this is basically the evolution of the party throughout my D&D campaign over the prior year.
._.
Especially that last bit, they pretty much are just money grubbing terrorists at this point.

Sorcerer 5, leveling up- "Hmm, should I get one more spell I barely have slots for and one more sorcery point... or take a level of warlock and get two spells, healing and cantrips for days?" One pact with an angel later... He's also a tiefling who pretends to be a devil to fuck with stupid peasants. It's really criminal no one introduced me to D&D sooner.

Suddenly my router won't let my players access the game.
That tears it, I'm giving Roll20 a shot.

And actually help some of the peasants I mock. It adds to their confusion though, which adds to my merriment. So, no good deed and all that.

Can... can it be both? It's my first tiefling, so I decided he would take the social stigma associated to his race and make a mockery of it. If superstitious fools are gonna be scared of him, might as well get a laugh (and possibly advantage) out of it. I spam thaumaturgy everywhere I go, I've pretended to snort the ashes of a disintegrated enemy to "eat their soul", I made an entire show of "re-animating" a dead mouse and floating him down a corridor that was sadly entirely wasted as only undead were in there to see it. But it's been fun. Now it'll be double confusing (and amusing) when the "devil man" says he'll eat their soul if they're bad and then sends celestial healing light up their asses. And as for my patron, I get the sense she's wagging a finger while suppressing a smile and in the heavenly break room is all like "psst! guess what I'm working on? "

Friends and I have been discussing starting up a game. For me it'll be the first time playing again since high school (so first in well over a decade). Actually really excited about the possibility as its been something I've been wanting to do again for years. Though the downside has been it spawning way too ideas for what I'd like to play as (as is very common in any rpg I play). One idea I have is of a Shadow Monk, one who works in shadows to bring things to light that would otherwise slip away.

The party I'm running is now doing a dungeon BACKWARDS!
While scouting out a goblin stronghold, they found a hidden entrance that took them practically to the boss's room. They killed him, the messenger from the Big Bad, and freed the prisoner they were questioning, who won't leave without the map he was carrying when he was captured.
They did not find the map on either body.
So they are working their way back through the keep looking for it.
Not realizing it was hidden under the mattress of the goblin king's bed back where they found him!
I never know what they'll notice or miss!

My thinking is the character is an agent of Pelor. Working in the shadows against those who would wish to do evil. After all the brightest light can cast the darkest shadow. Still working though some ideas before I fully commit to what I'll play but if its the shadow monk, I may have to go full Batman with the voice.

So like a monk vigilante? Working in the shadows against those who would wish to do evil. You'd love my party then. They engage in what they like to call "terrorism for profit" I will let you work out what that means for yourself, I personally think it fairly obvious. Not to mention two of em are a bunch of Hell worshiping Diabolists to boot who have dealt with lovely industries such as assassination, drug running, slavery and the razing of villages all for profit and all because it was legal. Its amazing what characters can justify when you give them carte blanche on consequences for their actions for a little bit. Now one of them is a knight of the Empire, another runs an actual cult of Mephistopheles, yet another is a prominent Wizard within the Empire. ._. Blood money goes a long way it seems

I'm actually considering getting into DnD as a DM, but my biggest problem is finding people to play it with. Before people say "you can just play online," I want to try playing with PHYSICAL people, since not only is it more fun to play with people physically, it also prevents me from being that socially inept, always online person.
I'm thinking of either trying to get my family involved if they're interested, or just put a call for local players on a social media feed or something.
As a rookie DM, I'll be starting with a version of Mines of Phandelver, try to get the physical core rulebooks, and probably try and make some fun little adventures, including:
- Visiting a dinosaur circus that goes horribly wrong - Playing DnD within DnD - Getting stuck in a game show

Especially if you end up playing with a group that has experienced player. Doesn't necessarily mean the experienced ones are right (they might be using a house rule, or a misinterpreted rule, or worse), but sometimes seeing it in practice gives context that reading them on their own doesn't bring.
I agree with playing in person; if I want to game online, I'll be in Guild Wars 2; if I want to D&D, I want to be at a table with others. There are LFG resources online, though they can be spotty. Some places seem to have better results than others for that.
Edit to add: To expand on the "or worse" comment: I was in a game with a novice-to-D&D-DM; one of the other players suddenly had a big power spike. Running the numbers, I realized that what was happening was that at each of the level-ups, that player (and later, others, following his lead) was leveling up both their base class and their prestige class at every level up (i.e. double-leveling): get enough XP to go from total character level 11 to 12, and they'd go to 13: +1 base and +1 prestige. I abstained. Later, the DM asked me why my character was so much weaker than the others - he didn't think that clerics were "that bad, power-wise". I probably should have filled him in at that point, but there were other things going on as well. Needless to say, he never figured out that instead of my character being "under-powered" most of the group ended up blatantly breaking the rules and he never figured it out.

As a rookie DM, I'll be starting with a version of Mines of Phandelver, try to get the physical core rulebooks, and probably try and make some fun little adventures, including: - Visiting a dinosaur circus that goes horribly wrong - Playing DnD within DnD - Getting stuck in a game show I would try to find a group and play first, before jumping behind the DM Screen - there are some things that using the rules, versus reading them, might fall into place better. Especially if you end up playing with a group that has experienced player. Doesn't necessarily mean the experienced ones are right (they might be using a house rule, or a misinterpreted rule, or worse), but sometimes seeing it in practice gives context that reading them on their own doesn't bring.

Thanks for the words of caution/help. I did actually play with a group, which was a rather informal one, so I got a feel for what a DnD game is like. I'm most likely am going to be a DM that plays a little loose with the rules myself. But like I said, my biggest problem is finding a group that's available to play with (the group I played with didn't have a schedule I could follow in the long-run, so I only played one game).
