Okay, question:
For the upcoming module I asked the players to send me "wish lists" of magic items that they'd like to have. I told them that, no promises, but if they had anything reasonable they'd like, I could, at my own discretion, have some of these things appear as loot from monster fights or quest rewards. The adventure does allow for this, and I happen to know that a couple of items they DO want are available fairly early on (depending on what they do) straight out of the book
Was it a smart idea to make this offer?

I did this in my Pathfinder campaign and it turned out fine. Just make sure you don't accommodate any unreasonable requests that badly unbalance future encounters.

While I've never made any offer like this as a GM and likely never will (our campaigns all drift towards "high challenge, low reward" after a while), there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's good for a GM to know what the players like, and that includes knowing what rewards they desire. Make sure that your players feel that they earned it (unless they explicitly want a Monty Haul campaign) and all should be good!

So, tonight was the first session in my homebrew campaign and my first time DMing. Overall it went pretty great, very happy and quite surprised how certain things I planned turned out. The party was tasked to find 3 local missing children from the town of Fogfield, they discovered they were taken by a upstart bandit group called the Spades of Hate. Who was run by a tiefling named Saren Hate. The group found out thats who took the children from investigating the location the children liked to play at. The abandoned home of one of the towns healers a man named Cosmo Armettin, there they found a note and a calling card from the group. The group was then tasked to find the bandit group while the guard captain had a scout go find out if Cosmo was at the place the guard captain had known Cosmo went to.
While on route to the bandit's hideout the group was ambushed by a goblin pack. They defeated the goblins while keeping one alive. Questioning the goblin lead them to learning that they were sent to scout the town for a potential counter attack. Rolls lead to them not knowing when the attack will happen but its happening. Group tied up and brought the goblin with for the rest of the venture. Upon arriving at the hideout, a secret cave behind a waterfall. The group, thanks to rolls tripped an rock alarm and let them know they were there. There expedience of dispatching the goblins did work in their favor, as Saren's full crew was not with him. As the battle progressed Saren tried to buy time by slinking back into the shadows to buy time so the rest of his gang could show up. Sadly they never came, as his two lone members were quickly dealt with. Saren was alone and was eventually knocked out and brought back to Fogfield for questioning. That is how the session ended.
I honestly had that Saren fight going a different way but I loved how it all played out. The beginning of the boss fight was great as the fighter used the tied up goblin as a aoe attack. Which I allowed to just be a bonus attack because I loved the idea. So, the kids remain missing and the scout has yet to return. My voice is a bit lost but had a lot of fun. Can't wait for session two. Oh, yeah I knew my one friend would try to hit on one of the female npc's I created (basically Ciri from The Witcher) so it was shut down quick by her, as she said wasn't interested but not in that nice of a way.

Last night my group was working on two cases for the town's Lord Protector while investigating giant sightings. The Lord Protector hired them on as outside consultants because all her deputies are dealing with orc attacks on the outlying farms One was a decade-old missing person/murder case (Lord Protector was certain the guy ran off with a girlfriend, the guy's brothers was sure he was a victim of foul play) The other was a break-in at one of the shops. Working both cases at once, it was amusing how their minds shifted as they questioned suspects. While walking to the innkeeper, who was rumored to be carrying on an affair with the missing person, they learned she was a retired adventurer herself, and suddenly they started thinking about how she might have been involved in the break-in since it was a second-story job involving an old, well-kept climbing harness(she wasn't, of course, she was happily retired) In the end, they solved the murder, found the thief, and are about ready to confront the thief's boss. Good job all around. Then the giants (who are using the orcs as a distraction) will attack

So... tiefling sorc5/warlock3- I'm taking the warlock spells now while I got the chance, as I'm going back to sorcerer for the rest
Hex or Hellish Rebuke?
Hex- nice d6 to add to my attacks, disadvantage on checks that I've honestly never seen come up and can move it around until the fight's done, but I've got other things I could concentrate on (i.e. hold person, dragon's breath) Hellish Rebuke- nice pair of d10s for more fuck you's when something hits me, but it burns a slot each time. I have more slots that a full warlock, but I'm partial to "cast once, keep on hitting" spells, they seem more efficient somehow.
Thoughts?

So... tiefling sorc5/warlock3 A side question if I may: Is that a purely RP thing? Or is there an advantage to getting a few Warlock levels? I don't imagine that the Eldritch blast is worth it without the improvements later, is it? Actually the main motivation was mechanics. Leveling to sorc 6 seemed really boring. Oh, one more spell, one more SP. Woohoo. Didn't help that I was playing with some higher level folks who were clearing entire rooms with fireballs while I was still diddling my Chaos Bolt. Yes I could take Fireball too, but with only one or two slots I had to share with Counterspell, it didn't seem like I'd be joining in anytime soon. So I took a look at my options. And two things jumped out at me from Xanathar's- Celestial Patron and Gift of the Ever Living ones. The former gets me healing (and quite frankly the best 1st level damage spell I've yet encountered- Guiding Bolt) while the latter maximizes the fuck out of it for me- literally. All healing done to me is auto-maxed, no rolling. It requires Pact of the Chain though, hence why I needed 3 levels in warlock. Overall though, I will have gotten cantrips for days (I can hit with almost any damage type), 3d6 bonus healing (4d6 when I level to 8), max self healing and another evocation, two extra spell slots on short rest, Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration (both of which I can twin with metamagic) and a warlock familiar which will also get in on the shenanigans. Not bad. Now the lad still clear rooms with fireballs, but I've expanded horizontally in utility. I'll catch up. As for RP, it's been interesting. My guy was a criminal, initially just in it for the money, but with some neat tricks on the side. But as a tiefling, he weaponized the racial stigma in the form of fucking with anyone even remotely superstitious, tricking them into thinking he's an actual devil who'll eat their souls. Now, it turns out he ran into the one angel in the entire multiverse who thinks that's funny- and it'd be even funnier if he actually ended up helping innocent people. So now he still pretends to eat the souls of stupid peasants- but he also grudgingly defends them, and gets a kick out of causing even more confusion that way.

With me becoming a DM in the near future. I've started making myself some enemy cards to help accelerate some things. Thought I'd share what they look like, if anyone is interested in them. Always willing to make some to help out.
You should see my massive beastiary binders...printed out over 1,000 pages of content for pathfinder, including all 6 official beastiaries, monsters from other sources, and 3rd party creations. Since it's all neat and in one space, the benefit is now I can pick and choose whay I need based on the whims of the situation, and stack them into a mini binder for GM purposes.

So, no opinions on Hex vs Hellish Rebuke (if you could only choose one)? My experience with playing warlocks is pretty limited. The only one I've played in 5th edition was a hexblade who didn't have either ability. But I think hex is in general the more popular ability.

Dwarf rogue question- recommended build. How to approach combat? How effective. Melee weapon? Recommended build? Depends on what you want to do.
How to approach combat? Probably make a good melee rogue with the extra Constitution and hit points. Especially mountain dwarves, with the extra strength and proficiency with medium armor.
Melee weapon? Any that can be finessed. Forget axes or hammers, you can't get sneak attack with them.

How about areas where u cant hide Thanks. What level? Past level 5 you get uncanny dodge to halve one attack against you. After level 7 you get evasion to halve AOEs. But in general, remember range weapons get sneak attack too. As long as someone is in the thing's face, you can just stay back and ping away at it and still get sneak attack. If you have to melee, run up, stab, bonus action disengage and run back. Remember, sneak attack isn't just about the "sneak" part. If you have advantage, or you have an active ally within 5 feet of the target, you will always get sneak attack (unless you get disadvantaged for some reason). That or play a gnome and hide behind a friend

Well, my party triumphed over the aboleth by opening up the drains in the area and pumping the water out, forcing it to flee. They also killed one of its minions and questioned in using a Speak With Dead spell. Through it they got a name of an organization "The Kraken Society" Now they're planning on researching this group, and are carrying the severed head of a merrow around in case they have any more questions to ask...
