So, when I look at magic defense, it says percentage of damage resistance to all magical OR ELEMENTAL attacks. So....basically, when one can, stack magic defense vs flat out cold/fire/lightning/spirit?

The problem with that idea is that it’s a lot harder to stack magic defence than it is elemental resistances.

Who needs defense at all when so many classes are immortal. Knight Enchanter > Ring of doubt > All passives in inferno > Gathering Storm > Energy Barrage > Fade touched Royal silk with the fade ability = Unkillable, barrier up 100% of the time, invisible 100% time and even when it's not proc'd you have the ability off cd always, Fire mine with extra damage up 100% of the time. Even if you some how decide to chill out and not just in the middle of mobs 24/7 you always have something to fall back on. Make this even more broken? put a heal on kill buff on your staff or armor, whichever one is left from the royal silk. OR Necromancer > Ring of doubt > Kitty's collar > Inferno passives > Gathering Storm > Energy Barrage > Walking Bomb > Fade touched that gives you Walking bomb on hit, to make it even more OP attach the buff to another companion since Necromancer can explode any Walking Bomb proc even when not using Walking Bomb themselves. Constant explosions 2 of the most broken builds in the game. Then there's Reaver with healing buffs on.

Yeah, I have to agree that apart from the layered defenses, guard/barrier/armor, you really don't need anything else. Although that Amulet of Physical Immunity is awesome. Too bad you can only use it in Trespasser (without mods).
But prior to Skyhold, with self-imposed non-use of the Golden Nug, I tend to use magic defense instead of elemental defenses, assuming I've already maxed out barrier, guard and armor buffs. After Skyhold it's not worth the bother.

Silly me, how could I forget arguably the most broken ability in the game, Varric's toxic cloud with the lost in the mist upgrade. Go down this tree first in the beginning of the game, and your companions can take 3 bears on nightmare mode, all trials on without dropping once before even getting to skyhold/their specializations. It also solves the problem with the stupid ranged class AI running up to enemies. Just run up to the enemy and drop the gas on em. Now the party is invincible! it's even more broken with horn of valor guard on all companions + mage barriers. Ultimate way to cheese the game.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna respec everyone out of Horn of Valor -- that upgrade wasn't very well planned.

ACtually, I like having Bull with Horn of Valor with the GOH upgrade.

You're gonna have to do that with each class, because they're all broken, even Varric can just camp in his mist and fend off everything with his bombs, and use fallback plan to ensure toxic cloud is always up. I probably play as Varric the most, though. I mean all the classes are broken, but his atleast feels fun. I always make my Inquis a Knight enchanter with a lot of control. Having him run up to enemies and drop the disruption field and running in with Varric and placing bombs is fun, they all get frozen in the air. Speaking of KE, that class is a god controlled by the AI built like my suggestion above. Better at tanking than the tanks! I usually put disruption field and energy barrage on preferred for him so he will always proc the fade touched royal silk. I also like how they nerfed KE but didn't really nerf it at all. That spirit blade + clean burn is just too broken, everything's off cd all the time, and with the fade step with the mana restoration upgrade you can literally just spam everything fire mine > static cage > zip through them > sword > fire mine > static cage. It's pretty ridick, pretty ridick
