I don't care about grindy loot based shooters that are designed to get people addicted. I do like a good story. So let's talk some lore. Anthem is set on an alien planet far away, so something happened for humans to live there in post-apocalyptic circumstances. Was it a colony? Anyway, the planet has medieval ruins that look very human. At the same time, it's unlikely humans build those. Why would scifi space travel humans build old walls on a far away planet... But then... who did build them? Lots of speculation for everyone! Pretty sure there is some mutated/fallen/whatever humanoid civilization on the planet that have a bigger role than those big beasts. Does it have something to do with the lightning storm...

Not the Protheans or the Jardaan then. Hmmm, maybe we're not in Kansas anymore...

Bioware is keeping a tight lid on lore. Which begs the question as to what, if anything, will be revealed in PR prior to release, not to mention in the beta? We might not know anything, or only the broadest strokes, until the game is released.
So let the speculation run wild!
How did we get to the alien planet? Assuming "we" even applies -- maybe it's like Star Wars in a galaxy far, far away and the characters only look human, but have no connection to Earth. I'm going to go with shipwreck, or a colony ship situation gone wrong. Although it would be way more interesting if in fact there was a Terran Empire covering a big chunk of the Milky Way and this is just one outpost in the ass end of nowhere. Or maybe even a penal colony! Freelancers and everyone else in the hub are descendants of criminals sent to this planet to suffer -- kind of like Australia.
Who came before (your ruins question)? There has to be some reasonable explanation for the ruins. Either the planet has had a long series of failed colonization attempts -- because the native fauna are just that nasty -- or there was one previous occupation, the indigenes, and they created the fauna and got overrun by their creations. I'll go with just one previous occupant and they created the nasty fauna.
Are Shaper Storms cause or effect? Meaning, did the Ancients create the storms, as a weapon or by accident, or are the Shaper Storms a natural phenomenon that wiped out successive attempts a colonization? I'll go with the Shaper Storms were a weapon that got loose in a civil war of the Ancients.
Who is fighting over it now? It seems likely there may be more alien species fighting over the planet's resources. Rule of 3 would require at least two other aliens fighting over the planet, but four or five would be good too.

The problem if they left it on Earth I am pretty sure there would be people looking for those locations and then make claims about how "lazy" BioWare is because they don't really exist. I have seen it with other games so I would expect it to happen here as well.

I do love the Australia idea... Could the Shaper Storms and old ruins have something to do with time travel, I'm wondering. Imagine that there are different versions of the same map. Three different eras... Anyway, the planet has medieval ruins that look very human. At the same time, it's unlikely humans build those. Why would scifi space travel humans build old walls on a far away planet... Because they aren't scifi space travel humans any more? They were very pretty old walls. The humans build a huge 'wall' much higher made of metal. So the old pretty walls are remnant of something else probably

I’m guessing the original inhabitants of this planet did it.
My running theory is that these humans are colonists and they were surprised to find sentient inhabitants. Something bad happened, leading to the destruction of the colonists ships and the native civilization, leaving everyone at the mercy of runaway terraforming tech.

The ancient dudes. Then we'll find a beacon/artifact, and the voice in the sky will proclaim: You are the One!, then we'll...you know how it goes.
I'd love if story is other way around and we get to kick humans and their fancy mech-suits off the planet.

That could make it an universe without FTL technology. A 100 years journey to get there, finding out the planet is full of dangers and mysteries. Help won't come for another 100 years...
