Was wondering how’s everyone feels about it.
I have mixed impressions after 2016-2017. I have never played these many games in this short of time (I think I tried more than a dozen games, holy cow) and the most I did was two replays. Some of the new games I tried, i did like, but others were disappointing. So, I know how Steam sales really make it tempting to try more games, but part of me thinks screw it, I am just going to replay the stuff I loved a few times, and stop going out of my comfort zone....
Do you guys have any similar dilemmas?

hey Jade, I looked at this earlier but I was on my phone and passed on replying at that moment. now I see that you deleted your account so maybe you just took a break or you're changing your name again. I'll reply now in case you're giving lurking a shot.
I think that trying new games has created an "absence makes the heart grow fonder" effect for me. So I see a use/need/desire for both. After playing Dragon Age trilogy 4 times straight, I was getting burnt out. So branching out to Mass Effect, The Witcher, Horizon Zero Dawn, Technomancer. Senua, Stardew Valley, even Life is Strange creates in me an urge to go back to Dragon Age. not in a bad way but in a way that was needed to extend my Dragon Age Patience, love, and enjoyment. Like, now I want to try playing Ciri through Dragon Age. I want to use Sensua's name for another character. Even though I found MEA to be kinda meh and Senua to be possibly too emotionally heavy for me to finish... I don't regret the refresh and really enjoyed my time visiting (but not staying) in those worlds.
Hope that helps. See you next time.

I buy lots of games and rarely finish them and end up back playing the same old games again. But hey, after more than 50 goes through DragonAge Origins, I only found out today that Dwarven Nobles can have tattoos. I just finished Planescape Torment, so I'm still trying to work out which old game to replay again.

I try to alternate old games and new to strike some kind of balance, especially with RPGs. Other games I don't tend to replay as much, but if I like an RPG I usually want to replay it at least a couple of times. If I really love it it'll be a lot more than that - I've got eight Dragon Age world states and five so far for Pillars of Eternity. Not even sure how to count how many times I've played Baldur's Gate.

However, I do play a smaller number a lot. I won't name games, let's just say the series rhymes with Fragon Sage. Other than that, there is Civilization, which I play a lot and Batman Arkham City/Knight. So far, the only game I own that I haven't finished is MEA, and I've only just started on that.

I have a pretty big backlog, but most are games that came out a while ago and I have yet to get and play. Usually the only way a game gets bought but not played is if I got it before I had the hardware to run it (usually becomes of some crazy deal) and it slips through the cracks when I do get the hardware. Also, I always finish what I start, or at least I can't recall a game I abandoned without finishing at least once.
I replay shit like mad though. Some games are almost a yearly staple.

With time, I've come to ever more just replaying my favourite games of old. Part of that is due to necessity as I'm going through times of low funds, part is because I'm getting old and find it increasingly difficult to learn new stuff, but part is also because I'm not a fan of modern mass-market games. Too cinematic, too many cutscenes, too many QTE's, etc. I'm not a fan of cinematic games, I just wanna play and have fun, except if the story is extremely good as in ME1.
Modern games tend to focus ever more on cinematic qualities than gameplay, and I don't like that. It feels like I'm playing a movie, but I want to play a game. I like Quake, not Call of Duty. Skyrim, not Witcher 3. Borderlands 2, not Tales of the Borderlands. And so on. If I want a good story, I read Shakespeare or Dostoyevsky or some shit like that.
One of the few newer games I really enjoyed was Doom (2016), and I guess that's telling, because it's at heart a retro game. No fucking around, just in-your-face heavy metal mayhem.
I do like some indie games that keep up the old spirit, but I miss the old times when "AAA" games with million-dollar budgets used to be like that.

Modern games tend to focus ever more on cinematic qualities than gameplay Games with more focus on cinematics than gameplay exist ever since the introduction of the CD-ROM as a medium (Wing Commander 3,4, Prophecy, 7th Guest, Sierra FMV-adventures like Phantasmagoria, etc, etc). And even before that (Space Ace and Dragon's Lair, which were all about QTE's...). So it's not something new.

As for Wing Commander, at least those cinematics were restricted to between missions, they wouldn't interrupt you while you're in the cockpit. Action games were action games, not movies. Today every game must be cinematic, and they have a nasty tendency to do this cutscene - walk 30 metres - cutscene - kill 3 enemies - cutscene - fight boss until he's lost 1/3 health - cutscene... rubbish.

Currently been playing a shit ton of Starcraft 2 coop lately (I've had SC2 for years now) and my usual R6: Siege playing with my mates which has been preventing me from playing games I've bought in the past couple of months.

Most of my gaming time goes into favourites like EU4, TESV, DAI. DAO, DIII, CKII but I am doing something new now and that is FO4. I do have too many games in my backlog. Some good ones don't get played because they cannot hook quite like the ones above. MEA sure did though. I have more 400 hrs there so far and will get back in time but now it's the Boston wasteland on the menue.

I know I am quite strange but I usually play 1 game at a time, play the hell out of it and then, when I am done with it, I never come back to it, unless, of course they release some DLC or expansion pack. And if the DLC is out by the time I have already finished all of my planned playtroughs I just play it separately and I never start a new playthrough just to include it.
The only exceptions are NWN 1 and 2 because from times to times I like to play some community adventure modules.

I use it to make silly things - mostly I just like the sound of machinery going *psht-psht* Is the story stuff in? I found it too pricey when I went shopping some time ago.

I keep a fairly small backlog of games that I return to. For a while, I would go back to San Andreas or Dragon Age Origins or 2, but Mass Effect was primarily that "old" game I would constantly revisit. It takes me a while to really jump into a new game and stick with it - I'm meandering like crazy in FO4 (who is Shaun?) still haven't completed TW3, and was late to HZD (on a 2nd playthrough now). I suspect HZD will eventually be one of those games I revisit often as well one day.

Full price for Vault tec, Contraptions and Wasteland workshop are still worth it for me since I enjoy the rebuilding part of the gameplay as well. But if you don't then I would only get them as part of the GOTY edition. It will always cost more to buy the story DLCs and base game separate than getting the GOTY edition anyway. So you might as well go for that and get them as a bonus. Sort of.

I'll definitely go for GotY edition then...

I tend to replay games a lot mostly because my taste/requirements are so narrow that games are just not being made quick enough to fill my time. Must be story driven, must be 3rd person view and must be on PC are the basics and thats not even touching settings and style
