It's not even regarding them being gay honestly. I meant as a character "archetype" in general why is this something we sort of latch onto? It wouldn't be an issue if certain groups weren't denied certain archetypes. Bioware has not presented that variety. M/F have gotten fem women, roguish women, shy women, KISA women. F/M have gotten bearish men, roguish men, intellectual men, troubled/boody/angsty men, KISA men. F/F have gotten fem women, roguish women, shy women. M/M have gotten roguish men (I count Bull as roguish) and troubled/broody/angsty men. Same-sex romances are lacking in variety in regard to archetypes, particularly for m/m.

I just want a quirky sarcastic female warrior with a dark past as a LI for my character. Rogue turned Knight kind of LI.

I would settle for being able to play as a more feminine character... Maybe frostbite is to blame here, sadly, Bioware struggles with some basic feminine character customization, like hair styles and armor/costume designs (for the MC). I don't mean bikini "boob armor" but like, a nice ballroom gown for the Winter Palace should have been an option. I hope that is something they try to improve in DA4. This, and I would also appreciate more feminine walking/sitting animations for cutscenes. Why do Cass and Vivienne get to power walk and not my Lav? And the sitting...

Because the last time they tried that, DA2, there was an enormous backlash. Bioware really cant win for losing when it comes to this sort of thing.

I don't remember any female-specific animations in cutscenes. Hell, I'm pretty sure femHawke pees standing up just like dudeHawke does (when you first get the estate back). Outside of cutscenes, DA2 and DAI both have female- and male-specific walking animations. DA2's were pretty awful though, all the women ran with broken hips and actual limp wrists, it was ridiculous.

Because the last time they tried that, DA2, there was an enormous backlash. Bioware really cant win for losing when it comes to this sort of thing. There was a backlash because it was done poorly. There are still different walking and running animations for men and women outside of the cutscenes, and they're actually done very well this time. Most cutscenes have the same walking/sitting animation for both genders, and they look very Manly Man. I remember only one cutscene where female quizzy used the feminine walking animation - one of the late conversations with Vivienne.

DA2's were pretty awful though, all the women ran with broken hips and actual limp wrists, it was ridiculous. That is what I am referring to. The intentionally tried to make FemHawkes running animations as ultra feminine as possible. Frankly as nice as customized animations would be, this is just not feasible. Consider how much supposed effort it takes just to make romance animations for more than one gender? Now imagine that for the entire game. Now add to that some people wouldn't want an ultra feminine Player Character, so it would have to be a choice. Now imagine that some people would want an ultra feminine Male Player character, so that would also have to be a choice. Now add to that multiple playable races. I'm all for calling out when developers cut corners, but this is kind of above and beyond what anyone could do and expect to ship a game.

I thought DAI did just fine for the walking/running animations. They weren't overly exaggerated. The cutscene animations could stand to be more gender neutral, though, instead of "clearly and exaggeratedly male". It's not just women - men don't need to walk/sit like there's a giant melon between their thighs. Whatever the Inquisitor's packing, it is not that big.

Honestly why do people care? Why not make a good character regardless of look or archetype Hey, stop messing with my power fantasy! I paid good money for it. /s While I agree with you, I also can't get too excited about the issue, on either side (though the prejudiced can just gtfo). Compared to other media, like movies, games are way closer to that ideal. Waaaaaay closer.

I don't understand the point of the OP... it's then followed up with another picture... which led me to believe this thread was more about complaining about the appearance of women in DA franchise than an actual topic but then posters I respect started having a real conversation so... pondering if the OP matters any longer as the topic has nearly moved on without it and become it's own thing even on page one... Meh, the great thing about forum discussions is that the OP is little more than a prompt. Even calling it a suggested topic for discussion is probably going too far.

Personally, I'm in the camp that I want my companions to be attractive in the traditional sense of the word. No, triggered people, being ugly, having a butch haircut, and being borderline mentally handicapped does NOT make a character interesting. It just makes them annoying. Wait, so you are saying "traditional sense" attractive people are intrinsically interesting and never annoying? Huh. That's pretty much the exact opposite of my irl experience, but maybe I live in a bubble ... You know what I think would be great for DA4? There should be a straight male-only romancable ultra hot makes-Yennefer-look-like-a-botchling super vixen companion, who is also a kickass tank, DPS archer, stealthy rogue, and support mage -- all at the same time, while also being a great cook, a great nurse/healer, a great singer, and a great listener. Then, in the final stage of the romance, the stage the PC has worked long and hard for, to earn some sexy time with the girl of his dreams, she spurns him for being a total loser! Preferably for a lesbian companion that all the straight males wished they could romance. (Also pretty much like my irl experience, if I'm being honest.)

Where the hot ladyboy romances at? There definitely seems to be this fixation on making butch/androgynous women in games (or rather all entertainment), but never feminine/androgynous men. And if they are feminine/androgynous, it's played for laughs. While I'd really like an LI like that (for men especially), I'm really devoid of masculine male gay romances and I can't really 100% get on this hype train. Maybe women would like a really feminine male LI? I don't know. But, with there never being a gay male elf (elves being generally more androgynous than other races) in DA, I can see it happening in DA4 (unless there's a gay qunari or a gay dwarf). That would possibly be quite neat as well, because I assume elves are going to have plenty of spotlight in DA4, granted it has anything to do with Solas. So a plot-centric gay character would be fantastic.

I am going to need a definition of 'normal gamer' before I can laugh at this properly. The ones who drive the sales for the games. Not the niche audience who swallow whatever drivel is put out because they can't find other games with gay romance options. I would imagine that this "niche audience" is actually pretty big an audience... And it's constantly growing as more people who have never experienced the "good old days" of gaming are starting to play games. The thing is, this whole "diversity stuff" is actually pretty lucrative from the business side of things - if you want to reach for a larger audience and get the best employees and so on, then having diversity, even though it can be a bit banal sometimes, is a great way to do this. Companies have realized this fact long ago, and that's the reason they usually are so active in introducing measures encouraging diversity and opposing discrimination. In the case of BW, it's even more obvious why they would want to go down the diversity route. It's only natural that a RPG would want to have characters with different backgrounds so that everyone can find someone they can identify with, because immersion is so important for the kind of games BW makes. And wouldn't it be boring to only romance Caucasian girly blondes and brunettes all day long? And this is all solely from the business perspective. I also think it's morally right that a degree of diversity is upheld But I won't go into that. PS. To be honest, I'm not actually a big fan of identity politics, either, and I'm saying this as someone who represents a racial minority in my country of residence. But what's ironic is that identity politics seems to be actually quite important to those very people who vehemently criticize it - if criticizing racial and sexual diversity isn't identity politics, what is?
