I’m a big fan of Lightning for Solas, though there are differing opinions on that. Lightning combines with Weakness to create the Sleep effect, which is a great combo primer. But on the other hand, it does remove the Weakness effect, which a lot of his passives benefit from. Personally, I get more benefit from Sleep, but that will differ based on playstyle. From a pure story perspective, I also enjoy giving lightning to the guy whose name is the elven word for “pride”. I’ve heard Knight Enchanters do well with fire because they have tons of barrier. There’s a passive that lets mages spend their barrier to make fire spells stronger. I haven’t played around with it much myself. While I like Viv, I never had much place in my team for a KE. Dorian is probably the least tied to a specific element. Though, because his death passives benefit from pairing with rogues, it might make sense to give him ice. Rogues + Frozen does a lot of damage. From a story perspective, he’d probably be specialized in fire due to the obvious preference for that element among Tevinter mages.

dorian : fire if you want to optimize the fear duration.
vivienne: fire if you want her o be a DPS character by using her barrier to buff her fire spells (keep in mind some specific spells do not benefit from the barrier bonus like the old upgrade of fire mine for ex. You can also make her use ice if you plan on let her fight in close combat with her spirit blade (but the AI is not that great with the spirit blade and she will spend a lot of time running after ennemies and taking damage, so....)And finally lightening is never a bad idea for vivienne.
For Solas, it doesn't matter, lightening would be my "go to" if it wasn't bugging his passive, so it depends...fire is ok, ice would be ok too if it wasn't the worst element in the game in my opinion.
This is the element where most ennemies are immune (a ton of animals + all undead)compare to fire which is the best imo and lightening which is well balanced and finds very few ennemies immune to it. keep in mind ennemies with elemental resistances become immune on nightmare difficulty.

I usually end up giving everyone the same abilities until their spec is available, then I focus on that. I don't use Vivienne much and Solas gets tiresome after a while. Him leaving is the main reason I prefer playing as Rift Mage. Stonefist is a blast, plus it breaks down doors. My favorite mage spell is probably the lightning cage though, especially for JoH and Trespasser.

Dorian mostly uses Fire, but I give him a Lightning-element staff, so as to live up to Varric's nickname of "Sparkler".
Solas gets a Fire staff and Immolate, but also keeps the Winter's Grasp ability he starts with for me. Fire seems "required" since a couple of his banters refer to him using it, but I like the idea of him taking a "generalist" approach to magic. He also gets the Fade Step spell from Winter, despite it being terrible with the AI, because how could I not give Solas a spell with the word "Fade" in the name.
Vivienne I've experimented with in various ways. I like focusing a lot with her on Ice, given her introduction scene. Outside of that, I either give her Fire/Ice Mines, or make her even more of a generalist (since she actually claims to use all four elemental schools in her banter).

I load Dorian up with lightning, a handful of fire spells, and then I focus on Necromancy. Static Cage + fire to amp up the horror spells is positively vicious.
I fill out Vivienne's Winter tree and then focus on her KE spec.
Solas I do Spirit, a bit of fire, and his Rift Mage spec.
My Adaar focuses almost exclusively on fire (her name means "fire-thrower" after all), a bit of Spirit, and Rift Magic.

I give Dorian the fire/lightning build and ice/lightning for Vivienne. Solas in under house arrest but whenever I do take him along. I also fill out their spec trees with the exception of bottom left spell for Dorian - don't see the use of it.

Dorian mostly gets the fire tree and his own Necromancy tree, Viv Lightning and Knight Enchanter, SOlas Ice and Rift mage. All get barrier, because it's usefu, and Innqui is mostly a mixture of fire and lightning plus RIft mage (I do use Dorian and Viv often, but seldom Solas and Rift mage is great)

Dorian: Lightning
This is due to his noted penchant for "flashy" spells (according to Varric), which is why he got the nickname "Sparkler" given to him.
Vivienne: Ice
She already shows a mastery of ice spells in her introduction and this tree suits her cold, "Ice Queen" demeanour.
Solas: Fire
Solas' rift mage tree includes Firestorm, he often describes being "hot-headed" in his youth and dialogue with Vivienne mentions him accidentally setting his robes on fire, all of which make me think he favours this tree.
(With all three I throw in some Spirit, both for better mana regen and barrier being a must on higher difficulties)

From a story perspective, he’d probably be specialized in fire due to the obvious preference for that element among Tevinter mages. But then, Dorian revels in his role as a pariah to the Tevinter way of life, so even from a story perspective, ice seems perfect for the guy.

Dorian with fire because of the sparkler nickname and other party banter, Vivienne with ice because of her intro scene and lightning (or no element at all) for Solas.

I have been auto-leveling and found that Viv gets Ice, Dorian fire, and Solas lightening. Not sure if that changes each game though.

I do not know. All I know is I give mage companions one elemental tree, the spirit tree and their specialization tree.
I usually give the companions specialization and 1-2 other threes but anything specific I do not know.

I go for a MAIN and a Secondary for my mage companions.
SOLAS: M = Fire S = Ice
VIVIENNE: M = Ice S = Lightning
DORIAN M = Lightning S = Fire
I give each of them the top 3 in the Spirit tree (Barrier, the saving barrier, and threat reduction). My current Knight Enchanter specializes in the Spirit tree, taking a modest mix of all three (Using Fire to supplement Spirit Blade, Ice for crowd control, and Lightning for passives only... there's only so much room in the ability bar)
I find the "Shocked" status effect to be the least useful, because enemies that can be shocked don't need to be, and enemies that I would want to have shocked cannot be.
Burning can cause panic no matter what (barring immunity of course), which means they are not attacking. Frozen or Chilled are self-explanatory. Either way, hot or cold, it adds up to more damage because that is time I can now spend attacking without retaliation instead of spending time relocating or strafing. It's like being able to hit 3 times for 500 damage or twice for 600 in the same amount of time.

I kind of like how each of them is portrayed in promotional artwork Dorian with Lightning, Solas with Fire and Vivienne with Ice Vivienne being ice is a given, it's one of the first spells she uses when you meet her (she also uses it in the trailers) Solas being fire is because...well, his party banter (Solas: I used to be quite hotheaded) and Dorian, well...like people have said...his nickname is Sparkler for a reason, and Lightning or Fire just makes sense in that regard to be honest I just tend to place points in whatever I think is appropriate for said character (I do wish there had been more skill trees to choose from, as well as unique specializations for the Quizzy (fingers crossed for DA4 )
