Bought Gears 1 UE on PC, and the core game still holds up after all these years. It's definitely noticeably harder on hardcore than Gears 4 is on the same difficulty though, due to no DBNO while playing solo and the AI companions being dumb as rocks + not being able to revive each other.
Oh and the game runs good on high at 1080p and 60fps for me.

Finished Gears 1 UE on hardcore solo last night.
Jeez, that friendly AI though. I yelled "stop blocking my shots!" just like Marcus at least three times.
Still, it was just as good fun as I remembered it!

Gears 4 on Insane is probably the single hardest campaign in the series, thanks to the new weapons and half of the cover in the game being destructible.

Just picked up the game last night; haven't played the campaign yet, but my buddies and I did fool around on some Horde and versus mode (mainly dodge ball). So far I have proven to rather rusty at the game, since the last Gears I played was 3 back on the Xbox 360, and I am slowly remembering why I fell out of love with the vs. gameplay. It's all the freaking shotguns. I hate it when the multiplayer of a game presents a wealth of different weapon choices to use, but really only one is the most effective, much like Destiny and it's love of the boomstick. I am going to refuse to conform with the masses though, just like I forced myself to use the 'No Land Beyond' on Destiny, I'm going to find out how to use a non-common weapon to win out against all those roadie running shotty users. Seriously though, I do think that the effectiveness of shot guns in both games needs to be toned down considerably, or for all the other weapons to be brought up to it's level. All choices should be viable in a competitive setting.

All choices should be viable in a competitive setting. All of the other weapons ARE viable, the Gnasher is used so much because a lot of people who plays Gears started with the first game, where the Gnasher actually was arguably the best weapon. The MP for 1 then began to revolve around the Gnasher, and later games adopted that tactic as standard because it's what people are already used to. The starter rifles in Gears 3 were monstrous if you were good with them thanks to stopping power. Gears 4 lacks stopping power, but the rifle damage has been increased to compensate (about 14 Lancer shots to down at medium range, and about 3 or 4 Hammerburst... bursts, don't know about the Enforcer). The Hammerburst in particular is almost OP with active reloads, and all of the starter rifles have fairly short cooldowns for the on-demand actives. This isn't even taking into account all of the various power weapons that can completely shut down a Gnasher user, like the Torque Bow or Dropshot. 9 times out of 10, the Gnasher is fine, the only time it really isn't is when there's a connection issue and it fires a blank shot that does nothing or the game registers the person being shot as closer than they are and they take too much damage.

Eh, I guess I have to get back into the swing of things, it just feels so… I don't know boring I guess when 9 out of the 10 players in a match are running around with gnashers and/or bunny hopping around corners. The hammer burst has always been a favorite of mine, though I don't ever remember it having this much recoiled and spread, I guess the damage increase should make up for it. I am not a fan of the decreased stopping power though. If I'm laying into a guy roadie running at me with a shotgun I expect to see him slow down or become staggered, not close the distance with no penalties and then one shot me just because I didn't land that final burst on his torso. Still, I am rather rusty like I said, and a little salty about steady loss rate I was seeing last night Anyway I had a question about Horde mode, are those big exo-suits still in the game? I was playing last night but I didn't see anything like that when using the fabricator. It would be cool if that item was something unique to the Engineer class, seeing as how they don't get access to the special abilities like mortar strikes or sniper sweeps that the other classes get.

It would be cool if that item was something unique to the Engineer class, seeing as how they don't get access to the special abilities like mortar strikes or sniper sweeps that the other classes get. IMO maining the Gnasher is my favorite way to play, apart from controlling the power weapons. It's fun to zip around and evade shots while closing in for kills, and even better if the opponent is skilled with the shotgun as well, it's almost like a dance, and whoever takes the wrong step first loses the battle. Unfortunately the openness of some of the new maps doesn't really allow for that (Forge and Fallout in particular). The only time you should ever be killed by someone running directly at you with a shotgun is if he was already close to you to begin with. If there's any distance between you and the other person at all, you can rifle him down if he just sprints directly at you. No shotgunner who is even half decent will just rush someone with a rifle and expect to score a kill. If he was already close to you, then your mistake is using a rifle against him. Rifles aren't meant for CQC in this series, put it away and take out a weapon more suited for close quarter fighting, like your own shotgun or a power weapon if you've got one. The Gnasher is high-risk, high-reward. You have to be quite close to score a one hit kill, close enough to be killed in one hit yourself, but it's easy to get close to score those kills. On the flip side, if you start with the distance advantage when you engage, it's very easy to maintain that advantage unless you let him get close or you're bad, and if you can keep him away, then you effectively control the battle. There's also things like the Lancer's chainsaw, smoke grenades, and frag tagging that you can use to combat Gnasher rushes if the enemy gets close. The Enforcer is also quite effective at close range, but it has a weak melee, no chainsaw, and a low clip size. horde question: I don't know. I've only played one game so far up to wave 21 (I was a sniper, my friend was an engineer), and the only things we bought from the fabricator were barriers, sentries, and weapons.

Chainsaws and gore are not my thing, but I watched my husband play Gears of War 1-3, and now I'm watching 4. The graphics are simply astounding, and the gameplay is very impressive. I'd say it's up there with Uncharted 4 and Overwatch for Game of the Year.

I'd say it's up there with Uncharted 4 and Overwatch for Game of the Year. You can actually disable the gore and keep the rest of the gameplay intact, it's been an option in-game since the first Gears of War in 2006. Of course, if you disable the gore then the chainsaw animations look incredibly silly, but no heads will explode, and nobody will be blasted into meat chunks.

How long is the campaign in GOW4? The game actually keeps tabs on how long you spend in each mode. I can't look at it though, so I'll estimate that on normal difficulty it may take between 6 and 8 hours. If you're playing on insane, then double that time, at least.

It's going to release on PC I've heard. Why would I look at it, though? - I don't know nuffin' about setting, story, characters and its gameplay. Apart from the thing that ports are prone to suck.

I assume you're talking about Gears 4. I haven't played it on PC, but all accounts I've heard say that it's actually really good on PC. The system requirements are even more reasonable than I would have expected for a brand new game built in UE4. As for WHY you would want to look at it, it depends on what you're looking FOR, tbh. Gears 4 takes place 25 years after the original trilogy. Some characters return, some don't. 4 sets up a new series of games with its story premise, but it neatly ties back in with the old games and largely makes sense internally, it's not just a bunch of ass-pulls made to prolong the money machine. For some things that happen in the game I would recommend at least reading a wiki synopsis of Gears 2 and 3, but playing the previous games is not really necessary to understand 4. The gameplay is probably the most solid that the series has seen so far. The campaign is locked to 30 FPS (there are a LOT of visual effects that the Xbox One frankly just couldn't handle at higher framerates), but the multiplayer is at 60 and 1080p, and plays silky smooth. If you enjoy third-person shooters that have some unique weapons, visual flare from the gore and gibs, and surprisingly emotional and touching stories, I would say to play Gears of War 4. As far as gameplay goes, it may be the best in the series so far. Story-wise, it's behind Gears 2 and 3, but only really because 2 and 3 hit some very dramatic and emotional notes and payoffs that 4 just couldn't reach, since 4 is a game largely about setting up a new story.

No need to divulge spoilers or anything, but I was wondering if the narrative does a better job this go around of explaining who and what the Locust/Swarm are. Do we get an actual insight into the villains here, or are they still the boogie men mindlessly killing everything in sight?

Do we get an actual insight into the villains here, or are they still the boogie men mindlessly killing everything in sight? For 90% of the campaign there aren't even 4 characters to play as, it's mostly just JD, Del, and Kait. Sometimes Marcus or someone else will join up, but that's only temporary. Swarm/Locust under spoiler tags, if anyone is interested in reading about it: The Locust never died after Gears 3. Adam Fenix's Imulsion Countermeasure machine killed off the Imulsion, but not the Locust like was originally thought. Instead, the Imulsion crystallized along the outside of the Locust's bodies, encasing them in some sort of cocoon and putting them in some kind of stasis for 25 years. The standard Swarm enemies you fight are not wholly Locust, but appear to be some kind of Locust/human hybrid, made from kidnapped humans who are placed into Swarm pods and forcibly mutated into Juvies. Juvies then mutate into the different subforms of Drones that you fight. Where the first Swarm creatures come from, I don't know, you only see the corpse of a human who failed to mutate and you see a Juvie mutate into a Drone, but by this point chronologically the Swarm are already established as having lived in their area for a while, so their exact origin is not yet known. There are living Locust encountered and fought in the game, referred to as Scions, and they lead the Swarm. Best I can tell, the Imulsion in their bodies being killed off made them smarter, because these Locust can speak in fully coherent English and form complete sentences, unlike the Locust in previous games only roaring and speaking single words at a time. Also it is very strongly implied (like, to the point where they all but say it directly) that Kait is Queen Myrrah's granddaughter, seen from aka it's mother Reyna handing Kait a pendant resembling the Locust emblem, and resembling the same pendant that Myrrah wore in Gears of War 3.

Ah, so the story kinda starts a new plot? I'd hate to drop into a game filled with references I have no clue about. There are some returning characters (and a reference to several who died during the first trilogy and between 3 and 4) and some references made to the previous games, but the only thing you really need to know from the previous games is the ending to Gears 3, which is given in a playable prologue to Gears 4.

The multiplayer bit isn't actually that far off.

I'm always wearing pajamas. It doesn't mean I get enough sleep.

The multiplayer bit isn't actually that far off. "Competitive mode, where you'll get let down by your terrible self. " I lost it

This bit of Gears 4 MP rage where the fellow threw his controller and headset made me LOL, especially since it reminds me of myself.
(skip to 2:23 for the good stuff)

Alright guys, good news (for me at least...). Since I bought the 1070 and NVIDIA extended the Gears 4 promo to november 16, I actually got the game for free. So now after all the bullshitness of getting the actual code from NVIDIA, I finally got it and I'm downloading the game.
Also 80 MOTHER FUCKING GIGABYTES!!!!111 THE FUCK!! It'll take a while... but at some point I'll be able to play the multiplayer. I'll keep you guys updated and maybe we can play some day.

The PC version is pretty dead for multiplayer, but there is cross-platform play available for the different co-op modes, and since Gears 4 is one of the games available for Xbox Play Anywhere, you can also play it on an Xbox One without having to buy the game, if you have an Xbox One.
