Plus let's be real, it takes the government forever to fix actual problems if they do at all, so something this low on the list will probably never be addressed until the actual issues are dealt with. And there are always actual issues to deal with.

I don't think the government has any right to intervene since I don't see the loot system as gambling. Obviously opinions differ on this. It depends on the implementation of the system. If the boxes are purchased directly with real money, then the case for them being considered gambling is very strong. However, if you first have to buy a bundle of "premium currencies" in order to subsequently buy a lootbox, then by definition that is not gambling, since the part of the process where you spend real money has no risks and no chance of getting shafted by RNG.

Yeah, its not like if casinos started making slot machines drop peanuts (literal actual salted peanuts) when you don't hit a winner we are going to let them stop calling slot machines gambling. "But you get something every time you pull the lever, you never walk away a loser" isn't going to get them off the hook. Loot Boxes are definitely, in principal, gambling. Whatever legalese they are currently exploiting to get around the technical definition of it can always be changed once lawmakers feel so inclined. That's why its important for these companies to realize the harm they are doing and the dangers in continuing down this path.

That being said though, I sincerely hope warning labels and maybe a child lock or two aren't the only measures considered. The Yong vid seems to imply that's the direction this is going. How does that stop the sliding scale of content being locked behind this RNG bullshit though? Of what use is seeing the next Star Wars game plastered with red tape and skulls and crossbones and "Here be Lootboxes", from the perspective of actually wanting to play a Star Wars game with all the cool shit available within? At best you know not to get invested in it ahead of time, but still.
Otherwise, yeah lol@ censorship. The only thing these assholes are expressing here is greed, and the message is getting through no problem.

Tbh, if the ESRB had a shred of integrity, they would throw the whole thing behind an Adult Only rating. If nudity/sexual-content and violence are a good enough reason, this one certainly is. This would actually be a good deterrent, as it would really cut into sales and would force a choice- do you want mass market appeal, or do you want a niche of milking a few suckers? Practically, such a regulation would send the message we're trying to send- the gaming masses are not ok with your shenanigans. Though I wonder what would happen if they actually rose to the challenge and made enough decent or even great games that raised the marketability of AO. Then we'd conceivably be right back where we started. Hopefully it's enough to just break the momentum of this shit.

I doubt this would be a real problem, I mean, the whole reason for this covfefe is that these mechanics simply don't make for a good game, they tend to screw with progression and the satisfaction and enjoyment of players. At least this way you have a significant downside attached to this type of monetization. Maybe not, but if I were them and this regulation was put on me, I'd want to throw the next Mass Effect or whatever under AO, make it big and once it's mainstream, start up the RNG shit all over again. It's a long term strategy, and these corporations may not have the patience for it, but it is a possibility. Hence why I hope once the momentum breaks they just move on to the next way to move that bottom line.
