It was less than 2 hours, but this new Netflix original film The Titan was pretty disappointing. Did anyone else watch it? Because I'm wondering if anyone else found the last half hour or so as incomplete and confusing as I did, specifically: Saw it, considered it, read reviews... Passed it by. Glad I did. >.< Looks like "Anon" might hit the same rear-view status unfortunately.

iBoyThe worst part is, up until this movie I really though Maisie Williams could act. Maybe her character in GOT is just very close to her actual self. So let me get this straight: A guy gets a phone to the head, puts on a a side cut to mask the scar, and takes out some mobsters, because I reads their texts. Well, at least they tried to hit the target audience. :P

The movie that annoyed me the most during recent years is Prometheus (2012). I can't even begin to explain the amount of things that's wrong with it, so I'll just list a couple: useless sequences of pseudo-science babble, the super-duper-deep philosopic approach to the origin of life, "professionals" acting like total idiots in the face of things concerning - well - their actual profession, the huge plothols gaping everywhere etc. I could go on, but I won't. It's just so sad what they did to the franchise. Here's hoping I'll forget about this nonsense at some point in my life.

Annihilation. Arrival. I'd add Gravity, but I gave up on it about halfway in. Other issues aside, all three have basically the same bland "unhappy woman with a tragic backstory and no personality" as the protagonist, only with different PhDs and dead family members. I fell asleep twice while trying to watch Annihilation.
A visually stunning movie that wasted a cool premise on bland, forgettable characters, who looked as bored to have been in this movie, as I was trying to get through it. A pity, because I was looking forward to this film for months before it came out, only to be extremely disappointed with how dull it ended up being.

It is possible that you lack the mental/emotional capacity to appreciate it Something I see people bandy around a lot when people dislike the movie, that they didn't "understand" the depth and nuance of the film... which is pretentious twaddle, as the movie has the all the emotional, mental and philosophical depth of a toilet bowl.
The movie is a dull, listless affair, about a dull, listless affair in Area X, interspersed with flashbacks about a dull, listless affair.

Could easily apply that same thing to anyone who lauds a film as "thought-provoking" and "complex", because it makes them feel smarter to claim that they alone understood what the movie was about and trying to say... I mean, some people have said that about "The Room" for pity's sake, even though it's clearly a terrible movie.
It isn't like I'm not a huge fan of science fiction or this type of genre of film, I love movies that deal with totally alien environments and eldritch locations like Area X, that's one of the reasons I was so psyched for this movie when it was announced. So it's not a lack of interest in the subject that's why the movie left me feeling cold... I just felt it was a boring, uninspired film that wasted it's cool premise and awesome cast.
But fine, I'll sit through this movie again to see if a second-viewing will change my mind?

I am not trying to be a dick, I just cannot abide people (millennials usually) who say a film sucks when it very clearly has AT LEAST some objective artistic value & storytelling merit. Often, the best films are the ones that push the proverbial envelope, that stretch or expand the formula. I, personally haven't seen ANNIHILATION yet, as I am kinda strapped for cash & could barely afford two IMAX tickets to Infinity War. However, a good friend gave this film high marks, so as far as I am concerned it deserves as second look. The point I am making is; film is a very symbolic and subtle art form, and to say a movie sucks because it's boring or slow or too esoteric simply makes me sad. Also this director has a pretty good track record, so...

No worries, I hope I myself didn't sound too much like a contrarian for disliking this film even though many people seem to be generally praising it. I must emphasise that I do agree with everyone that the film is visually breathtaking, the premise regarding the Shimmer is fascinating and the initial mystery did keep me hooked for at least the first Act.
However my main criticism about the film is that once they enter the Shimmer, the film lost anything that could serve to engage me further into the story. The members of the team sent into the Shimmer aren't particularly memorable (I couldn't even recall their names when I began my second viewing), nor are they particularly likeable, making it hard to necessarily care about what happens to them when things go inevitably wrong. The pacing was also somewhat of an issue for me, as the characters move from one location to another in rapid succession, when they could have spent more time in each location to better explore the setting and ideas presented in the film.
Perhaps we lost something in the adaptation from novel to film (I know that most of Ventress' subplot from the novel was cut), which forced many plots and elements to be condensed to fit a two-hour movie. That's why I feel this could perhaps this could have been somewhat better as a miniseries, which would have allowed them to expand upon things and give us more time to digest the eerie atmosphere within the Shimmer. For example, had this been a miniseries, they could have encountered more evidence from the previous expeditions (something that does happen in the novel), rather than only finding things left behind by the team before them. They could have also had more run-ins with dangerous animals and/or fauna that have resulted from freak mutations within the area.
We could have even had some Ventress-specific flashbacks at the army base, since the movie does make a point that she worked there before the Shimmer's expansion forced them to abandon it as their previous HQ.
(As much as I hate the found footage genre most of the time, having the movie be presented as a recovered apocalyptic log would have worked here. For a team sent into investigate the Shimmer, no-one is documenting or recording anything throughout this movie, which kinda defeats the whole purpose of the expedition, no?) I'm not really certain how I feel about this movie, after watching it a second time. I don't hate it (nor did I before, even if I was perhaps a bit too harsh on it), but it definitely left me feeling unsatisfied and wishing that the movie could have delivered on a story worthy of it's premise. Instead we've got a doomed expedition/suicide mission with underdeveloped redshirts, where all the typical cliches end up playing out. That's why I take umbrage with people who say "If you don't like it, you just didn't understand it", as my main complaint for the film is more that I feel it wasted it's potential. I understood this movie fine, it simply didn't entertain me (as much as I had hoped it would). But if I have to end on at least one positive note, I do still intend to read the Southern Reach trilogy that the movie was based on. Despite my dissatisfaction with the film, I'm intrigued to know whether the source material might capture my interest in a way that this film sadly didn't manage. (Edit: Forgot you hadn't see it yet, so apologies if I accidentally spoiled any plot elements. Tagged a few things, just in case)

I've watched underworld and felt disappointed by Vampires in that. (THE ENTIRE POINT OF VAMPIRES WAS TO DRINK HUMAN BLOOD TO SURIVIVE, TELL ME HOW DO YOU SURIVIVE PEOPLE? basically my rant about underworld and how I disliked that It didn't do more on vampires)

Deadpool 2. I watched it in the same week I watched Red Sparrow. I thought Deadpool 2 was a bunch of cringy over-hyped garbage, and Red Sparrow almost great despite some flaws. Ironically Deadpool 2 got a significantly higher rating all over. Which if nothing else tells me that when it comes to movies, rating is mostly irrelevant as an indicator for me. Aw, well that's sad because I wanted to watch Deadpoll 2... (we went to watch solo instead, it was much better than the internet would have you believe)

If this is movies I've spent money to see in theaters then: Sweet Home Alabama, Pearl Harbor, Aeon Flux, The Da Vinci Code, Thor, Age of Ultron, Suicide Squad, 50 Shades of Grey, and The Last Jedi.
If it is movies that I've bought on dvd, seen on tv, or that someone else has treated me to then it is far too many to list. I however will bring up X-men Origins, Spiderman 3, Batman and Robin, The Dark Knight Rises, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and X-men 3 because that is time I will truly never get back.

Pirates of the Caribbean was forgettable and I'm glad at long last, it's done. X-Men 3.. was that the one with Deadpool without the mouth? Was it that one? If so, that sucked. Never watched batman and robin and have no plans to do so.

I stuck around for all 39 hours of this 3 season show. Let me tell ya, it's the biggest waste of time. The first episode is oddly crafted and its confusing as to whether the setting is in present day of taking place in the 1950's. The way people act in the series is equally odd where in a world where vampires and werewolves exist, the people inhabiting it talk about these things as if its normal. Then there's the weird relationships between the main characters and very little is ever explained (such as Dr. Whatsisface having super strength. The only good thing about this series is the werewolf transformation. It truly is a sight to behold. Overall, its a cringefest where nothing meaningful happens or is accomplished and watching it will leave you feeling empty.

X-men 3 was the one with the mutant cure and had very crappy versions of Juggernaut, Psylocke, and Archangel (which is a shame because the actor that played him is awesome). This movie also sucked. As a matter of fact, it sucked so bad that it was retconned out of continuity with Days of Future Past.
I just wasn't a fan of Rises especially compared to the first two. The story just wasn't there for me and some of the decisions with characters were also off. I did love their take on Bane. Tom Hardy is just awesome.
