Hello everyone, I am going to start my second playtgrough ever of DA2 as a mage. So I will be needing tips on how to properly build him. In my first playhtrough I was a default female warrior. Before I lost her to the Wardens I had built Bethany pretty strong. I also built Anders and Merrill pretty strong too. So I don't need that much help with mages and sword and board warriors. What I do need is help with building rogues like Isabela, and two handed warriors like Fenris. I'll also need some strategy on how to beat the Arishok as a mage. I will be using my latest DA:O save. In it I played a male human noble who romanced Morrigan. Maxed out friendships with the other companions except Zevran, he liked me but not loved me, and did their individual side quests. Agreed to but did not kill Flemeth. I personally executed Loghain, made Anora Queen. I did the dark ritual with Morrigan. Killed the Archdemon. Morrigan left at the end. Saved Amarithine and Vigil's keep. Spared Nathaniel. Spared Velanna. Made a deal with the Architect. Restarted my search for Morrigan. Found her at the Dragon Wastes and entered the Eluvian with her.
It is late now and I must sleep before I go to work. But afterwards I will start my PT as a default male mage Hawke. I can't make a decent male Hawke that I am happy with.
The "let's Play" will be text only. So I will post my progress here.

Well hon, I got my videos up of my play-through. In those you can see how I build Fenris and Izzy. When it comes to the Arishok, dunno if you play on PC, but there are a couple of MODs that can help. One is to balance out his abilities and adjust the cool-downs. Another is to remove his skewer ability. As for fighting him as a mage, its not as bad as it seems. Just stay away from him and use ice constantly. And as final tip: If you don't enjoy your Hawke during the prologue, your not going too. Trial and error. Good Luck!

Winter's Grasp and Horror are beautiful against the Arishok. He'll be immobilized half the time.

^ this, Horror is huge against the Arishok. Petrify also very useful, iirc. Mage was actually the easiest Arishok fight for me by a pretty decent margin, DW Rogue and 2h Warrior were much more of a pain in the ass.

For the Arishok: crushing prison, fist of the maker, winters grasp, pull of the abyss and grenades. Fenris: his personal tree, cleave, mighty blow, scythe and sunder. Isabella: Assassin tree Those are the main ones then the rest change with each pt. Thanks for the suggestions on the builds for Isabela and Fenris. And thank you for the tips for the Arishok.

Hawke, Bethany, Carver and Leandra fled Lothering after the Darkspawn attacked it. On their way through the Kocari WIlds they encountered darkspawn. They decided to flee to Kirkwall which was a two week voyage from Gwaren. They met Aveline and her husband Ser Wesley a Templar. Aveline was a soldier and also servend at Ostagar like Hawke and Carver. After trying to do his duty as templar he became weakened. They joined forces and continued along the path. Eventually they ran into an Ogre and more darkspawn. After easily dispatching them, more came. Though easily dispatched Bethany was killed during the fight sadly. After the fight Ser Wesley said a small prayer. As the fight continued a dragon swooped in and burned the remaining darkspawn. They dragon landed and changed form to Flemeth the WItch of the Wilds. She conversed with Hawke and after a while she agreed to take them out of the wilds, if they would do a favor for her. They were too take an artifact to a Dalish clan near Kirkwall. After Hawke agreed Wesley became more ill. Apparently he was suffering from corruption. Flemeth said there was nothing that can be done and that the only remaining Grey Wardens were long gone. Hawke told Aveline he would deal the final blow. After doing so Flemeth said they had to go. She brought them to Gwaren where they embarked on a two week voyage to Kirkwall. Upon arrival Aveline noticed they were not letting anyone in.
During the Varrics exaggerated retelling Carver was wearing Grey Warden armor. I never noticed this.

Hawke and company approached the guard, he said if we wanted in the city to speak to his commander. The group left and spoke to the captain. The captain was in an arguments with what look liked bandits. Hawke told him about his uncle Gamlen and that they had an estate. The guard said he knew of a Gamlen but that he was weasel. He said he would go seek him out then let them in. This angered the thugs and they attacked. Hawke and his allies defeated them. The guard told them to wait there and that he would be back with Hawke's uncle. Three days later Gamlen showed up. He said he had sold the estate cause of gambling debts. This saddened Leandra. Hawke asked him if he would let them into the city. He said he can't because he did not have the power. He told them that he had two contacts which were offering jobs. If Hawke accespted they would have to serve a year. He told them it was a smuggler and a mercenary. The group spoke to the smuggler and said they weren't interested. They then went to the mercenary and accepted the offer. Hawke was to kill a noble who did not pay them.
The group left and spoke to the noble after a while the noble and his thugs attacked. Hawke, Carver, and Aveline easily killed them. They went back to the mercenary and told him about their success. He welcomed them to the Red Iron and a year passed. Speaking to a dwarf named Bartam they asked him if they could go on his expedition. Bartram said no and basically told them to stop bothering him. While walking Hawke was pickpocketed by a thief. The thief was then shot by another dwarf. The dwarf took back the pouch and gave it back to Hawke. He said his name was Varric and that with his help he can convince his brother Bartram to let them on the expedition. But first they needed coin. Carver reminded Hawke that Aveline was working as a guard and might have work for them. They sought her out at the Viscount Keep.
She told them that some caravans had been attacked and that if she could join them in the quest. Hawke agreed.

talyn82 I've never taken the smugglers offer, always the mercs. Good eye on Carvers Warden outfit- I missed that detail all this time . Wonder if Carver as Warden is cannon for BioWare. It will be interesting to see if Aveline remarks to Hawke on him killing Wesley for her. I often went with Aneril's smugglers. Yes, I realized, that Carver in Grey Warden outfit. Probably, because this is the base setting: Carver wants that expedition, probably more than Hawke. My Hawke more often mercykilled Wesley instead Aveline. it's causes rivalry, and her discourse a bit different in Act1, if Hawke was who killed Wesley.

At least my female Hawke did and she also killed Wesley.

I now wonder if Bethany wore anything different during Varric's exaggerated retelling. I know her bust size is bigger. But she's my sister I don't look at those. lol

After leaving the Viscount's Keep. Hawke, Carver, Aveline, and Varric left to Gamlen's house in Lowtown. There Leandra was having a conversation with Gamlen about their father's will. He said there was nothing of importance in the will. Skeptical Hawke decided to investigate. The group went to Darktown, to sneak into the old Amell estate, which was now being used by slavers. Inside they were attacked after dispatching them they continued along the path. Hawke found a letter from someone called Tabrius. He continued his way to the vault were they found the will. They went back to Gamlen's house in Lowtown and gave Leandra the will. The will stated that the father left everything to Leandra and only a small stipend to Gamlen. Leandra vowed she would take the will to the Viscount and reclaim the estate. Afterwards Hawke and Carver got into a heated, argument, some things were said like Carver blaming Hawke for Bethany's death. After a while things cooled down. Hawke then spoke to his mother where she was reminiscing about Bethany. Hawke tried comforting her. Next Hawke want's to seek ou this Tabrius mentioned in the letter found at the estate.

Hawke and company went to speak to Tobrius. He said he knew who Hawke and Carver were and he knew their father. He said the letter was about the death of the Templar who helped Hawke and Carver's father flee the Circle. He gave Hawke more letters one mentioning the Templar's name who is the namesake for Carver. They returned to Gamlen's home and Hawke gave the letter to Carver as a peace offering. Carver looked at the letter and couldn't believe what he read. Hawke, Carver, and Varric went with Aveline to investigate the ambush site, where raiders were attacking caravans. They killed the raiders and returned to the Viscount. Aveline returned to her superior and was scolded. Hawke then spoke to Aveline and said they should investigate.
It looks like this time I have access to the dlc. At least "legacy."

Aveline suggested they take a look at the duty roster. Aveline was approached by a female guard who said the ambush sight was where she patrolled, and that it had normally been quiet. She also said that Donnic had been assigned to patrol Lotown at night. Aveline suggested they go there. they went to Lowtown that night and found Donnic being attacked by raiders. After killing them Aveline spoke to Donnic. He told her that the captain had assigned him to that post. Carver found some documets incriminating the captain. Aveline suggested they return to the Viscount's Keep and confront the captain. The captain was immediately arrested. Aveline was then told that she was to become the new captain of the guard. Aveline accepted. She then thanked Hawke for everything he had done.
I wish Aveline was a LI, cause I like her a lot.

Hawke received a letter from someone called Hubert. He said he had a job for him. Hawke went to speak to him he said he owned a mine called "the bone pit." He said his workers had become frightened and that they were leaving the mine. He asked Hawke to investigate. Hawke agreed and left. Inside the bone pit were dragons and dragonlings, after killing them, Hawke ran into a worker. He said their was a huge dragon right outside on the ledge. Hawke told the worker it was safe and that he could leave. Hawke went to the ledge and fought the dragon. The group slew the dragon and Hawke returned to Hubert with the news. Hubert made an offer if Hawke agreed to protect the workers, he'd make Hawke a 50/50 partner. Hawke agreed. Hubert told him that the workers were still terrified and he needed Hawke to reassure them. Hawke went to Lotown and told them the mines were safe and that he would protect them. Relieved they went back to work. Hawke returned to Hubert and told him about the news. Hubert thanked him. Next Hawk and company went to Sundermount to find the Dalish. There Hawke spoke to the Keeper Marethari, and she said he had to place the amulet Flemeth gave him on an altar, and needed a special rite to be said. She told him to seek out her First Merrill, and that after he completes his objective he was to take her with him. Hawke said yes to both.

talyn82 I've never taken the smugglers offer, always the mercs. Interesting. I always go with the mercs. Tried the smugglers once and there a complete bore. So much so, I reloaded a previous save and did the mercenaries. As for Wesley's mercy death, always let Aveline do it -seems the right thing to do for two reasons. One, its her husband and two I just met the woman. Now, if I wanted to play a complete asshole Hawke, then I would do it for her. But me playing an asshole character for DA2 or any game for that matter, will never happen.

Well, some of my Hawkes just as Cole: they just want help... (perhaps, on wrong way...) I suppose both have sense. To let Aveline do it, absolutely logical decision, Wesley is her husband – to mercy-kill him is her decision (and that scene is sad but great), but help her means, she doesn't need to blame herself. So: I see your point, but I still don't see the other as the wrong decision. (But you know, I tend to play as asshole Hawkes – true, it depend, what the "asshole" means... jerk: yes, evil: not)

I don't like micro managing my companions so use the builds/tactics from this site. They work wonderfully and I'm able to enjoy life more. You can figure out what to take on spells based on what tactics they are using. Companion Tactics

Hawke went up the Sundermount mountain and met Merrill, who accompanied Him up the mountain to perform a ritual involving the amulet received from Flemeth. After a brief attack from undead Hawke discovers that Merrill is a mage. After a brief conversation, they continue up the mountain until they reach a cave entrance. They fight spiders and eventually emerge on the hillside. The way forward was blocked by a magical barrier. When prompted, Merrill removed it via blood magic. On the other side of the barrier lies a creepy graveyard. The party is attacked by an arcane horror accompanied by several undead and a shadow warrior. After dispatching the creatures, the party goes to the altar where Merrill performs the ritual. Flemeth emerges from the amulet and explains that Hawke may well have saved her life, in return for saving Hawke's. Flemeth then transforms into a dragon and flies away.
They return to the cave entrance and the party is automatically transported back to the Dalish camp. From there, Hawke's party is transported to the Elven Alienage in Lowtown where Merrill asks if she can expect a visit from Hawke in her new home.
