Anyone else watching HBO's Chernobyl? I did not know there was a potential megaton size continent contaminating explosion imminent because the silicon they dumped on the reactor to contain the fallout had turned to lava, was eating through a concrete barrier into a large water tank which everyone thought was empty, but was in fact full, and would superheat and vaporize into previously said massive explosion. Wow. Tune in next Monday to find out if they stopped the explosion! (I assume they did cuz Ukraine is still there) How is the series treating the events leading up to the disaster? Is there an obvious slant to the show; retreading the same old "nuclear energy is evil" mantra, or does it actually explore how the power station's managers specifically ignored and then bypassed numerous safety protocols in order to meet a deadline? Seeing as how this is HBO, something tells me that this is going to be biased, I could be wrong but I doubt it. Most like to point to Chernobyl as a reason why we shouldn't use nuclear power, but I look at it as gross human incompetence, and incredible stupidity, that lead to the deaths of thousands and the displacement of thousands more. The first 2 episodes are basically the incident, and how the Russians are handling it. Beaurocrats mishandling the incident and not accepting the reality or implications - trying to deal with it as an "information" issue. Nothing yet about the buildup. The potential destruction described, though, kind of shocked me.

Beaurocrats mishandling the incident and not accepting the reality or implications - trying to deal with it as an "information" issue. Nothing yet about the buildup. The potential destruction described, though, kind of shocked me. Oh there was indeed a government cover-up after the fact. The Soviet Union sweeping disasters under the rug and hoping that no one else will notice are pretty much par the course throughout their entire existence. I do wonder though if they will include anything about the sheer incompetence that led to the disaster happening in the first place, or instead will they carry on with the same old bias that nuclear energy is evil? Oh it could have been much, much worse if it wasn't for the courageous workers and engineers working around the clock to prevent the massive explosion that would have happened if the molten lead, sand, and highly radioactive materials had reached the pooled water and flash evaporated it. It's a real pity that so many had to die because of the effects of the disaster while those directly responsible for the reactor meltdown in the first place got off with barley a slap on the wrist.

New episode of Chernobyl tonight, which depicted the destruction of the human body due to radiation - that was horrific.

I got a chance to see the trailer for Batwoman, and yeah, it's not a good trailer. It gives a lot of the pilot's plot away and its choices of lines and moments felt forced, cringey, and weird. But I'm still not going to be mad at the supposed forced feminist agenda or LGBT agenda, because a.) that's not worth my time arguing about, and b.) it's a TV show adaptation of Lana Kane, so this stuff was going to be unavoidable. This is CW staying loyal to the source material they're adapting, though maybe it's a little too loyal. And it's the CW, so their quality with their soap opera shows can range from being cringely bad to somewhat addicting (I was hooked on Supernatural for a while, and my favorite Arrowverse show is Legends of Tomorrow).
I personally never like to judge a movie just on the trailer. The best a trailer can do is give me something that might seem interesting to look at and be intrigued into seeing the real thing. I'm still looking forward to Batwoman since I liked her performance in the Elseworlds crossover episodes, and its Batman, so I'm kind of obligated to give it a try regardless if I end up liking it or not. Whether this Batwoman show turns out good or bad depends on when the show gets released and how many episodes it takes to improve if possible. Who knows?

Chernobyl is great. I thought I would simply see a bit of it then watch something else but nope. I got hooked. It's crazy how destructive it was and all the effort that had to be made to contain it.
SPOILERS
Those three men literally saved Eurasia. They're true heroes. Yet they're practically unknown. Sad.

I'm watching Chernobyl right now. Good production values, good sets, but the portrayal of USSR party officials is completely wrong. They were ideologically driven and swept shit under the rug, yes, but they weren't blithering idiots. They didn't need "exposition guy Legasov and exposition gal Ulana" to explain basic stuff and geography to them.
And what the hell is the West's fascination with the iodine pills? Ooooh, take the iodine pills girl, you need them! LOL. It's like telling you to wear a bulletproof vest, when a tank is shooting at you.

I'm very much looking forward to this. The movie "The Golden Compass" was the worst adaptation of any type I've ever seen (and yes, I've seen an embarrassing number of video game movie adaptations). This, however, looks incredibly promising. The locations and the casting of every character so far are excellent (the location at 0:12 looks exactly the way I imagined it). CGI looks great (Iorek is real, people). I'm also hoping that the choice of music in the trailer is a sample of what we'll get in the show. The godawful, permanently "whimsical" score of the movie adaptation made me want to die. The only potential obstacle to the show's success that I can think of is that some people might be put off by persistent talking animals.

I do wonder though if they will include anything about the sheer incompetence that led to the disaster happening in the first place, or instead will they carry on with the same old bias that nuclear energy is evil? The miniseries makes the point that nuclear energy isn't evil and it's perfectly safe, as long as it's used properly.
If the series paints anything as evil, it's how governments/company/people are so often willing to build shoddy equipment, ignore obvious design flaws and safety concerns because it's cheaper to pretend they don't exist, then act like it's not their fault when the whole kit-and-kaboodle ended up going kablooey.
(Sadly that's not a problem that went away with the Soviet Union)
And what the hell is the West's fascination with the iodine pills? Ooooh, take the iodine pills girl, you need them! LOL. It's like telling you to wear a bulletproof vest, when a tank is shooting at you.
Iodine pills helps prevent radiation from accumulating in the thyroid gland, lowering the risk that person will eventually develop thyroid cancer. Ulana mentions that it will protect her thyroid from radiation when she's telling her to take the pills.

(Sadly that's not a problem that went away with the Soviet Union) Color me impressed then. I thought it was standard practice for Hollywood to depict nuclear energy as the anti-Christ in every piece of cinematography.

Iodine pills fill your thyroid with normal iodine and can't take anymore, so radioactive iodine has nowhere to go. So yes, it kinda protects you from thyroid cancer. But that's it, it doesn't protect you from anything else. You can have all the iodine in the world it won't protect you from radiation when you are forced to participate in the May 1st workers parade. Kiev for example had about 1200 times of normal radiation level during the parades.

The only times they ever brought up using iodine was to use it as a preventative measure to lower the risk of thyroid cancer, at no point was it treated as some magical shield that could prevent someone from contracting ARS.

Stranger Things S3 was such a letdown. No idea why most people loved it. 6/10 at best. Worst season by are. Way too much boring action. Very weak uncreative plot. The teenage drama was overdone. Started out great, dragged horribly in the middle and by the end I just wanted it to be over already. That song scene was EPIC though!
Started watching La Casa De Papel S3 and boy is it bad... Fell off a cliff into total absurdity. Jumped the shark hard with the pubic hair dialogue in episode 3. Utterly ridiculous. Maybe I'll stop watching right there. I also find it very questionable how much the show tries to make you cheer for this bunch of selfish violent asshats. The first heist was a great psychological thriller about stuff getting out of hand. Now they want to straight just gun down people. And somehow I'm supposed to like them?? Worse, now I'm even supposed to feel sorry for the psychopath from before. WTF. What happened to this show, seriously.
Feels like lately every damn show that was halfway decent got a horrible second or third season. Like the abomination that was Handmaid's Tale S2 or even Westworld S2.
It used to take 4 or 5 seasons befor a show ran out of ideas.
Am I getting old already or what is this??

I liked it overall, but I do think it should have featured the Upside-Down more and not tried to shoe-horn in all the characters. Nancy and Jonathan's plotline didn't really amount to anything important that required them to even appear, I'd have preferred Dustin, Robin and Steve gotten into the Russian base without needing Erica and I thought bringing back Murray into the mix seemed rather contrived.

I never felt Stranger Things was a great show. In my opinion, it's just nostalgia porn for people of a certain age. Once you get over that, it's just "meh".
On another note, I have finished the first season of The Boys, and really liked that.

Dustin/Steve was definitely a winning combo and the best thing about S3. Robin was cool too even though the whole girls-are-better-than-boys-at-everything-now is starting to get on my nerves. Also, apparently one lesbian character is a requirement for any Netflix show now. Nevermind gay men, female empowerment is the only thing that matters these days. It's so transparent and annoying.
Erica was just irritating. I don't like that character at all. Nothing cute or funny about her.
Will was really weak this season. They did very little with him. Shame.
Jonathan and Nancy were kind of redundant indeed and white male sexism was played up too much, rolled my eyes hard. We get it, men are aggressive assholes or stupid and women are flawless. Hopper being a representative of "toxic masculinity" was also very very irritating. Ugh.
The whole drama around Hopper's fake death really pissed me off. DO NOT put us through 10min of teary-eyed goodbye when he's not even dead. LAME.

I've heard of Gentleman Jack some time ago and have to say I've never heard of Anne Lister. I have to confess I'm intrigued after watching these clips so I ordered the S1 dvd. And then I went to look up the costumes because I was thinking; really, the real Anne Lister dressed like that?

Finished Season 2 of Titans the other night.
It was better than the first, I think, but the finale ranged from the best of the season to the worst within its runtime. Couple of really frustrating “why the fuck did they do that?” moments.

Watched a brazilian Sci-Fi miniseries (6 episodes) Omniscient made for Netflix. It is set in a near future were city security is outsourced to company that has every person being constantly folowed by a minidrone that sends footage to main computer that analyzes it and calls cops whenever crime is commited. To addres privascy conserns footage from drones is inaccessible to anyone. Main heroine, who works for said company, find her father killed but security system does not register it and she desides to hack in ot figure thins out. Part detective mystery, part heist movie, but mostly a psychological drama about a girl who has to overcome her fears to get things done. Some ploteholes, silly and convenient vulnerabilities for main heroine to exploit, not all acting is great and special effects are from last decade but overall an enjoyable show, bingewatched it in one go. Warning! Explicit sex scenes are present. www.netflix.com/se-en/title/80220334

For the past three weeks I've been binge-watching the 2004 remake of Battlestar Galactica and thoroughly enjoying every episode. I've always liked Edward James Olmos and I would put his performance as Cmdr/Admr. Adama right up there with Patrick Stewart's performance as Captain Picard. There's so many nuances to Olmos' performance; he can play a commanding officer who has great affection for the people under his command, who genuinely cares about them like family and is concerned about their well-being, to a hard-nosed hard-ass, take no b.s. officer who does what needs to be done- even if the consequences will haunt him.
And in that, we see many instances where his choices do come back to haunt him and he plays the parts of a man haunted by his mistakes and also someone who deeply regrets those mistakes and tries to make them right-- he plays both sides of the conflict equally well and gives each performance every effort. He also shows the character as a person and as someone who challenges his own growth throughout the course of the show rather than playing a one-note, flat, 2-dimensional type of character.

I’m binging watching Killing Eve, and while season 1 was incredible, the 2nd is pure crap with the thrill all gone. It’s not a drama with a natural dose of comedy relief anymore, just a cheap chick flick with villains being best buddies with the good guys, one trope that I always hated.
It has some good parts still.
