...is this class overpowered?
Finally a game where mages are the untouchable killing machines they should be.
I'm still early in the game, just finished the Tower, and absolutely blew through it, Fade and all. The right spell combinations are absolute boss killers.

BioWare is known for making their mage classes uber. Mage is my favorite class in the game. I currently have two a human and an elf. They both have different spells, with some in common but not all.

You'll change your tune when you hit Inquisition.
Truth be to told, I had the most fun playing a mage in Origins. There was so much to choose from! True, some spells seem silly or downright annoying -earthquake and fireball- but it still was enjoyable. Nothing like mixing spells up like fire and grease and watching things BURN!
DA2 was good, BUT I felt they scaled back too much and hindered healing mages. None-the-less, I loved being a Force Mage. Pair Fist of the Maker with that ice and fire storm and you owned a dozen enemies. I will say it was a nice upgrade to have a continuous base spell and whack attack.
Inquisition was a joke to play a mage. They took way too many spells out -healing being a major one that pissed me off- and replaced them with useless/boring spells and passive ones. Then you only get eight slots to use - which renders whatever extra spells you took useless - but also one special talent. I'm a mage not a sodding Jedi I don't need some glow sword. And while I know you are dying Cassie, have a blue barrier instead. (mutters).
Sorry..... coming up on four years since Inquisition's release and it still pisses me off.

Mages in DAO are the most easy to use and build, but they are by no means the strongest class, the only broken build in DAO were those ridiculous dodge spirit warrior or dodge shadow rouge,if you see a gameplay on you tube you will understand, they have 100℅ chances of dodging any attack and they even have stealth to properly use the OP gravity traps of DAA. If there was actually an online for DAO for players to test their warden builds vs other warden players ,mages will have no chances to win against the build I mentioned.

Well that's a bummer to hear about playing a mage DA:I. I was looking forward to it. I only played the game once as a Qunari two hander and got bored which is why I never beat the game. I had forgot about the annoying barrier casting on npc's and player each time before and during battle.

That may not be a problem for me, I am equally happy playing Wulfgar or Elminster.

I thought mage was best in Inquisition, albeit less skills to select from, but more refined.. but each to their own Inquisition's talent trees just boring. A lot. ___ Mage Hawke was the best. A demi-god. Mages are dangerous. (Of course it was probably just my feeling.) But the Warden was the most variable. I loved it. No restriction, just pure joy.

Mages are OK in all games, but I still like my rogues the best. The circle tower is relatively easy compared to some of the other questlines. I had not much problem with my rogue too. Mage in DAO is fun to play though, although you should go easy on the aoe spells, when you have melee companions. Walking Bomb is ok imo, but a fireball at the wrong time is disastrous

I still feel like being a mage in DAO is more fun and also more challenging than in DAI or DA2 ... imo. Like damn.. variety of spells that you can learn and use in the combat. In DAI I recall only fire, ice, electricity and soul spells. During my first playthrouth I already kwen which one I want to use and I didn't really study them. In DAO completely opposite situation. I was reading about all those spells and what they can do and there is soooo many ways to play as a mage and all of them are just so OP if you combine them correctly. In general all classes can be powerfull and carefully chosen skills can make game really easy.. but imo in first game mages are just by fact too strong. As an example if someone didn't explore that path there is this spell that you can cast on your enemy and their death causes a small explosion that damages all the enemies in specific range. The stronger your hero is the bigger damage it causes and at some point during my game I was able to kill all the enemies with this single spell during combat.. well so far I didn't see any possible way to go through combats like that in DA2 or DAI. I don't mean that mages are soo weak later or something. It's just they became easier to play I guess, cause it takes time to understand how to play them in DAO.

That's true cause game isn't and shouldn't be focused on learning mechanics so at the end of the game you can finally understand how to do something (which I remember happend to me few times and I really hated it xD). That's why I actually like this new way in DA2 and DAI cause you can truly go into the story from the very first minute and the only price we pay is just easiest development and combat systems which aren't that bad at all.

I'd like to take the opportunity to say: Rogue enemies with scattershot. Fuck those guys.
It paralyzes everyone and it gets spammed because there usually are at least three archers. Also, this ability becomes common after you reach a certain level.

You can do it to them as well.
Rogue ranger warden with ranger Zev and ranger Lel as well as spidey Morrigan can lock down a whole map of baddies with scattershot and spiders.

The biggest issue is: too much dumbing down and hand-holding. And add in the insults of no tactic menu, attributes distributed for you and unable to use all the talents you purchased is complete bullshit.
Previous two games -especially DAO - were about understanding and strategy of how you wanted to not only build your character but how you wish him or her to be the most effective in battle. Making you use your brain which is true source of how RPGs are. Whereas with DAI, the developer puts you in a highchair and spoon feds you. Want more bullshit? Open wide and just say, "Ah."

What I like more about playing a mage Hawke over the Warden is no friendly fire. In DA2 I can unleash hell on my foes. In DAO I have to be careful not to kill Alistair. I guess some people like friendly fire as it adds to the challenge. But I do love my two Warden mages and mage Hawke.

Those on PC do have a second option - a MOD. But its not 100% guaranteed to work all the time as is with most mods.
I never used the Mod myself. Others (in the comments section) have replied with mix results.
