If the blue angelwings/halo is available, that is my first choice. I generally go Diplomatic/Helpful, because I like playing Good characters.
But there are situations where I pick the red hammer, if I'm dealing with particularly abhorrent situations: Finding Mother for the last time before killing Quentin. Finding out Carver has been kidnapped. Finding out Orsino helped Quentin murder my mother.
I don't pick many of the purple options, unless it's the purple gemstone.
So, in order of priority:
Blue angelwings/halo Red hammer Purple gemstone Turquoise laurel Red fist Magenta mask
Barring that, I opt for the unique mage dialogue, or whichever option causes the least amount of suffering to innocent parties. Inasmuch as that's possible.
Overall, it's about 70/20/10 of Blue, Red, and Purple respectively.
It's the most authentic "me" in this game.

I tend to have a mix of blue and purple for my female Hawke (more blue than purple) and tend to go in reverse for my male ones (more purple than blue) mostly because in my opinion the male VA delivers the sarcastic lines just a bit better then the female one ^^ though if the situation requires it I also use the red ones particularly if it's a situation where I personally would be pissed of as well dealing with Quentin dealing with Meredith who uses your mother's death as leverage, also Meredith threatening Hawke about their use of magic (or that of Bethany if she's in the Circle) and when your sibling or love interest is kidnapped by Thrask's little party

Aside from being vastly entertaining, purple Hawke was a breath of fresh air after playing my Warden all stiff and duty like.
If my Warden were DA2's protagonist, he probably would be 70% red, 30% blue.

In Act 1, you can meet a Carta dwarf somewhere in Lowtown at night if you haven't yet payed Bartrand the 50 gold (think you have to complete the main quests first). He offers to pay your way into the expedition for a cut of the profits. If you accept, in Act 2 he shows up at the manor demanding more gold. If you refuse he threats Hawke/Leandra and then later attacks you with some of his men. For me, I always accept his deal in act 1. Money wise, you're still at the same point starting Act 2 as if you payed Bartrand yourself. You get a fun little extra scene. And, if you refuse to pay him extra, you get a little extra experience and some random loot after you fight him.

Ah, that explains it. I've never taken that deal. It would make more sense to me to have it as an option before you get to 50 sovereigns, but since it doesn't, I never feel like his offer is even necessary.

If Hawke only has 50 sovereigns, perhaps doesn't want just spent every money to the expedition, if sees another opportunity. There's Leandra, and perhaps even Carver/Bethany. And that bastard Gamlen too (still family).

It offends me that Dougal goes "I hear you're better at spending money than making money." Cheeky dwarf! I'm always loaded by the time I meet him!

Yes - there are two icons for each personality type and for some reason diplomatic has one green icon and one blue one. The other personality types are always purple or red.

Purple needs to be tempered with blue or s/he will seem overly childish or too insensitive. Or with red... I prefer this combination with a minimal blue. (Plus the red/purple with a minimal blue)
But I just say: insensitive people are exist. Sensitive people with covered emotions are exist.

Yeah and they suck. Full purple Hawke doesn't necessarily insensitive, perhaps just don't have many social ability (this one can be a red/purtrple too), or just doesn't want to show emotions – or already burned out... sad.

My Mage Hawke was always purple, because being an apostate mage in a city that hates mages with a passion is enough to make anyone cry. Plus there's the whole dead family thing. When faced with unbearable misery humorous deflection! Maybe if you laugh enough you'll forget you want to cry.
My Rouge Hawke was diplomatic. She had to spend her life deflecting accusations against her father and sister, and then against her companions and mages. She learned very quickly that you catch more flies with honey, and if you're slow to draw your sword (or in her case, raise your bow), people will be less likely to be able to pin blame on you. Not that they won't try.

Diplomatic with shades of snarky and angry. Politeness costs nothing and it makes Hawke sound like a profesional. Occasinal jokes and angry bursts are even more hilarious when they come out of nowhere and from person you wouldn't expect them to do so.
