Probably The Masked Empire. Reading parts with Felassan, Briala and/or Gaspard was quite fun (I don't know why, but Gaspard was often hilarious in this one). Also, it's the only way to visit proper Orleasian society and its cities. Not just that... market. Asunder – because I did read only that... Finally? Any thoughts?

Also, it's the only way to visit proper Orleasian society and its cities. Not just that... market. Asunder – because I did read only that... Finally? Any thoughts? Adrian was more reasonable than people said – and less annoying. Rhys at the beginning, with Adrian, was great – later sometimes annoyingly hesitant, and I didn't understand his attraction toward Evangeline – she was a Templar, and this annoyed me: another "opposites attract" cliche... But later she proved herself, she worthy. And I loved how she hated the Chantry's blood magic, and that she destroyed it. Wynne was annoying in the beginning, like in the Origins, but I love her tavern-scene – just like her conversations with Oghren in the Origins... But when she enraged, I loved her! And Shale, ofc. She at the end finally shaw: against the violence, not enough to prove, how trustworthy they are. Is never enough. I had only one problem: Wynne and Evangeline did it for Rhys, not really for the freedom. I loved Rhys at the end. He took his mother's position, and led the Aequitarians in rebellion! Like a true Libertarian! He didn't leave them: he took the greatest faction to support them in the cause of freedom! Ingenious! And his motivation was the freedom. Cole was really interesting. I loved his scenes. The Masked Empire worth it? (Orlaisian politics and nobles annoy me... but who knows.)

I had only one problem: Wynne and Evangeline did it for Rhys, not really for the freedom. I don't see a problem with this. IMO it's realistic. People may have leanings in one direction or other and have a certain motivation that forces them to make a final choice. As an example, my Inquisitor didn't think anyone should drink from the Well, but Dorian's remarks there are a final push to allowing Morrigan to have it. Someone else may not want her to have it simply because she's being an annoying know-it-all and so they take it themselves. I don't believe that the motivations of most people are pure in the way you suggest. The Masked Empire worth it? (Orlaisian politics and nobles annoy me... but who knows.) There are plenty of Orlesians and their politics, so if you find it that annoying, you may want to skip it. It's WEWH x 1000. There's also more elfy stuff. I'd suggest reading it because, like Asunder, it's connected to the events of the current games. It may give you a different perspective on Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, or maybe not.

I don't believe that the motivations of most people are pure in the way you suggest. Yes, and this makes Adrian's act reasonable. Cruel, but true. Wynne needed to see the system will destroy her son to see it's unjust. And they never will prove peacefully, that they worth the trust. This is weird, she was patient so many years, she had so much Faith... I just think about: Rhys would able to convince Wynne?

Asunder is my favorite. I like all of the main characters and found the story to be interesting.
I never really cared about Maric. In fact, with his books, the characters around him were more interesting: Loghain and Rowan in Stolen Throne, and the various grey wardens in The Calling.
Masked Empire is nicely done, but again I just didn't care about most of the characters, or Orlais in general, really. The most interesting person, Felassan -- er, well most here know what happens to him, so I won't spoil -- is a secondary character and hardly around.
Last Flight is okay, and informative as far as the historical facts, but I just didn't feel much of a connection to any of the characters.

I read them all and Asunder was my favorite. All of them were interesting to me for background story but what really sticks with me is that Loghain was not likable IMO, from an early age. What I really liked about Asunder is that we get to see good Templars.

Asunder - best story, best cast, hated Adrian and Lambert equally Last Flight - griffons! The Calling - Wardeny stuff is always interesting, plus more info on the Architect The Stolen Throne - ok, but characters were fairly dull, like Rowan the best . . . . . Masked Empire - dead last by a wide margin, at least until I got to the final third or so and things actually started happening; all the political bullshit bored me to tears and took me months to get through

I think the Masked Empire is the best written- though the characters were really unsympathetic IMO. I like Asunder but I don't like Gaider's male leads. Rhys and Alistair are a lot alike. If Alistair were a mage he'd be Rhys- that's what it seemed to me. Both strike me as overgrown man children. From that POV I didn't like Asunder but overall I did.

The Masked Empire. It was the first Dragon Age novel that I could not put down. I just thought it was really engaging and I found it so much more interesting than another book about Maric.
I liked Asunder for the plot stuff and I got a little emotional reading Last Flight, mostly because of Isseya and Garahel. TME had both of those points so it wins for me.

If TME had ended with everyone dying a horrible death, it would probably be my favorite. Instead, all the idiots showed up in DAI and I got to hate them all over again.

The Masked Empire worth it? (Orlaisian politics and nobles annoy me... but who knows.) Politics will probably not interest you (although it can help you with Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. Many people reconsidered getting Celene and Briala together after this. Also, Gaspard is quite a schemer in this one), elven lore and Briala's cause might.

I loved all of the books (I've read them a few times) Young Maric was hilarious(at least we know where Alistair got his sense of humor), I often felt sorry for Loghain that he had to put up with all of that
still hate him for Katriel's death though...she didn't deserve it, not really anyway
Asunder actually brought me to tears Wynne she was one of my favorite characters from Origins
the only one I didn't like very much was Masked Empire...maybe 'cause I don't really care much for politics *shrugs* Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts is a great quest though
and Last Flight...Griffins! I really hope they'll appear in some future installment of the games ^^ provided they find a way to breed them again, which I'm sure they will...they have mages, can't be to hard for them to figure that out and I loved Garahel, he was such fun ^^

I want to start reading these books. Is there a particular order in which I should read them? well, not really except for Stolen Throne and The Calling (Stolen Throne first, then The Calling)
those two take place before Origins and tell the story of King Maric and Loghain
then Asunder or Masked Empire, I believe those two have events that happen simultaneously from one another They take place after DA 2 and before Inquisition
and lastly The Last Flight, since it takes place during and after Inquisition, though might be even after Trespasser
