I noticed an article on IGN saying that the Academy Awards will undergo some major changes for their future Oscar broadcasts to hopefully make their show better and attract more viewers.
1. For starters, they plan to make the broadcast stick at 3 hours and try not to go beyond that. They plan to achieve this by not televising the more least popular awards (like best costume design) and stick to the big awards. These awards will still be presented during the commercial break, and may be presented online. So we won't have to sit and see all 24 awards in one super long sitting.
2. A new category is being added for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film. What that specifically means and how a movie will be eligible isn't revealed yet, but most likely it means the category will go to the movie that generated the biggest buzz that year or have some historical significance for movie history. This most likely will make superhero movies and other blockbuster films viable for an Oscar, and not just have the "Best Picture" be an esoteric picture that mainstream audiences wouldn't care about.
3. Starting with the 92 Academy Awards, the broadcast will be shown much earlier in the year, around February 9. This will keep the show to avoid being the last show in the awards season, preemptively cutting off viewer fatigue from similar shows.
Personally, I like these changes so far. I kind of wish they put more emphasis for social media or online interaction, maybe also having the show be streamed online as well as broadcast on TV. But as long as they don't have Jimmy Kimmel host, I'm good with this approach.

I know more enjoyable ways to waste my time. I usually take some minor notice of where the major awards go, but I don't need more than a few sentences in the news for that.
