I didn’t think most of the origins in DA:O were particularly satisfying, the Dalish one least of all. The human noble, to me, was the only one that really felt like it fit, with the rest just kind of being there, mostly reusing a lot of locations we get to visit later. I thought Shepard’s service background and origin sufficed to start the story off. Being able to assemble a sort of psyche profile for the character is enough for me. Anything like an origin story is just going to all converge on the game’s main quest and all feel a bit irrelevant anyway, which is kind of what happened through Origins. I kind of like how I can choose an Earthborn Butcher of Torfan and still play the entire game Paragon. It's like you have a certain past but aren't bound by it.

I'd prefer they not do origin stories. It made the characters too predefined for me. I would prefer they did something like DAI where while you did have a backstory it was left more ambiguous and you could express how you felt in dialogues discussing that. Even more so if we continue in Andromeda, since a big point was how it was a chance for new beginnings and not letting your past define you.
They did that in ME:A allowing Ryder to state how they viewed their relationship with Alec in various dialogues with SAM, Lexi, and the crew. They let the player decide if Ryder is an atheist, agnostic, or a believer in dialogue with Suvi.

the moment Dragon Age started to not be Dragon Age was when they started to add concepts from the Mass Effect series to Dragon Age, thus the uniqueness that brought Dragon Age when it first came was gone.
As much as I love the origin stories, I prefer unique things from this series as well as I prefer unique things for Dragon Age, the moment all started to get mixed in, it was the downfall.

I've heard that complaint before and I can't say if I agree with it since I've only played DAO. However to be fair the combat and gameplay of DAO was dated even then.

Maybe, but the combat got worse in DA2 and DAI. They were trying to make it more action based while also being tactical and ended up failing at both though DA2 I think did it better than DAI. I think they should have either played to DAO strengths in its combat style or gone full action.

I like the various origin stories in DAO, but if the choice is between having choices at the beginning (DAO) or consequences at the end (DAO, ME2) I'll take the consequences at the end.

Then I also spelled Elysium wrong. Nope, hero of Torfan. Only good Batarian is a dead Bataian. ME2/3 should have included a renegade interrupt to shoot every batarian you meet in the face.

If you're a colonist, definitely. Bring Down the Sky also doesn't make me like them, but I let them go to save the locked up humans. That said, I feel less bad about Arrival because it's almost exactly what Balak was trying to do to Terra Nova. If he wasn't killed in BDtS, he states in ME3 that he's the highest ranking member of the batarian military. While BDtS suggests he's part of an extremist group, ME3 says otherwise.

I kind of assumed after ME3 that the extremist group was just a cover to avoid retribution for killing millions. That being said despite how crappy I think the batarians are, in arrival I do attempt to warn them mainly because the kids didn't decide to be slaver douches yet. And practically you didn't do much worse or maybe you performed mercy killing to them than would have happened in a few hours once the reapers arrived.

I try to warn them, too. There are a lot of batarian terrorists out there. A lot of slavers out there. Neither endears them to other races. The rest are essentially "women and children". They shouldn't pay for what the terrorists do. Reminds me of a scene I recently saw in a show where I guy's wife was murdered for something he did. She was completely innocent but paid the price of his actions. That's what we'd be doing with the batarians.
BTW, I'd imagine the "Butcher of Torfan" would wear that nickname like a badge of honor. No need to be called "Hero".

There entire society is based around slavery and torturing slaves. Openly advertising and advocating for it, so I suspect even the women fall under the slaver douche category. I'm sure a small % are abolitionists so yeah killing all of them in a meteor strike will kill plenty of innocents which even my renegade shepards try to avoid. I'm not sure what a Shepard would think about the title, I do think they don't view themselves that way, that what they did was necessary and just. Though its mostly a in DS9 joke with me and my friends. Miles O'Brien is referred to as the butcher of Setlik III by the cardis, we always call him the hero of Setlik III for all of his cardassian killing.

YUeah, I liked those dialogues in MEA as well. However with Ryder's past they still had a lot more predetermined than I would have liked. I get why since that was a part of the story, but still wish it wasn't.

So long as we can play as a foul mouthed quarian female Vanguard, we are all for it. Uh Quarians aren't biotic so nope. I'm disappointed no one made an "anti-biotic" joke...
