Design and how well it complement the face, definition is last. Would it leave the face looking clear and significant or leave the whole countenance a complete jumble of whorls, spikes and twines? I find I only like Mythal's vallaslin. Preferably light.

Chose based on looks alone since I didn’t know they signified anything. My Inquisitor was my first DA elf, so I only knew little about Dalish culture. Also, she has a scar across the same eye and the green of the mark fits with the very redness of the scar, so it also gets a personal symbolism for her.
As you might be able to see from my avatar, I chose the simple version of Sylaise. A hearth is warmth and comfort, it is a representation of home. In other words, no matter where she is, she can have a “home”. This is very in line with the conversation you have with Cassandra about home since my Lavellan used the paraphrase “Home is where I am”.
If I had to retcon her vallaslin, I might pick one of Mythal’s. My Lavellan drank from the well, so it could be fitting if she already was a Mythal worshiper.

I picked Mythal, because I wanted to play an Arcane Warrior, and she didn't seem the type to fit with a Necromancer (Falon'Din) or a Rift Mage (Elgar'Nan). The temple was an added bonus and the Flemeth revelation made it all the more worthwhile.

He guides them to the afterlife. Well, in Dalish lore at least.

Considering the fact he started wars just to amass more worshippers if Solas is to be believed, do you think that raising colossal armies of the dead and enslaving spirits would be beyond him?

The Dalish don't know that, so the choice won't have anything to do with it.

The Dalish don't know that, so the choice won't have anything to do with it. Key words there, as pretty much anything Solas says should be taken with a grain of salt. Even if he actually believes it, the Dread Wolf's biases color his interpretations, like potentially seeing any form of religion or collectivism, even willing, as slavery.

To be very honest, I picked the Vallaslins of my girls at first based on the look and then create a pretty elaborate backstory in my head My little Luthiel Lavellan's is Ghilannain's. Lu is this tiny girl with golden hair and golden eyes. I always think she might've been a very naughty little halla in the life before if that was a thing, and she's the kind of girl who would love playing with the Halla despite being the Clan's second. Actually I can just imagine her as naughty little halla running everywhere. My Revas Lavellan got Mythal's cheek vallaslin that actually makes her look a bit like cat, which is the very reason I chose that for her. She has this feline quality. Independent and slightly (or a good deal) condescending at times, elegant and can be pretty judgemental. And above all, she is the Griffyndor-ish rebel girl that will fight for freedom and justice. If Fen-Harel has a vallaslin, she would wear one. Well, she ends up wearing one. A bare-faced Dalish.
